THE TASTING ROOM
IN SUMMARY:
Eastside Market Italian Deli
A Los Angeles Institution
1013 Alpine St, Los Angeles
Street Parking Available
Just minutes from Dodger Stadium, Eastside
Market Italian Deli isn’t just another sandwich
shop—it’s part of the city’s fabric. If you
love Pinks, Philippe’s, and Tam O’Shanter,
this is another must-visit that repre-sents
what Los Angeles is all about. Every great city should have a deli like this, and many
do. But here, nestled in the heart of L.A., we have something special: a true Italian
deli, serving up hefty sandwiches loaded with old-school flavor.
The Food
I stopped in for the Italian Cold Cut Sandwich, and let’s be clear—it’s tasty. The
bread has that perfect chew, the meats are stacked generously, and the balance of
flavors is just right. If you’re a fan of classic, no-frills, made-with-love sandwiches,
this is the place.
But let’s talk fan favorites.
• According to Cathedral alum Ventura Flores, the Meatball Sandwich is the
best hot sandwich on the menu—big claim, and I plan to put it to the test next time.
• Tony Camarena says the Chicken Parmesan is hands down his go-to.
• Ventura also recommends the Hot Sausage Sandwich, another hearty, sauce-
filled classic.
With these recommendations, I’ll make sure to order a hot sandwich on my next
visit.
The Experience
Walking into Eastside Market Deli feels like stepping into a piece of Los Angeles
history. The interior is simple and functional—no gimmicks, just good food. You
order at the counter, and the energy inside is a mix of regulars, blue-collar workers
on lunch break, and first-timers trying to figure out the menu.
The crowd? Yelp reviews often mention it’s a cop hangout, and you know what? That’s
fine by me. A steady stream of locals, workers, and longtime fans come through,
proving that Eastside Market Deli has been do-ing something right for decades. I
wouldn’t be surprised if Tommy Lasorda snuck over here a few times.
Yes, prices have gone up—what hasn’t? But the portions remain generous, and the
quality is still solid.
Summary
• For Customers: If you're hosting out-of-town guests and want to give them
a taste of authentic Los Angeles, bring them here. Big portions, bold flavors, and a
nostalgic feel make this a standout spot.
• For the Owner: You’ve built a beloved institution, but here’s a small suggestion—
maybe a menu re-fresh or some signage that gives newcomers a little more
guidance on the sandwich lineup. Some first-timers might not know what to order.
How Far Would I Drive?
If I had a flat tire in front of the deli, I’d walk inside and
grab a sandwich while waiting for the tow truck. If I were
in the neighborhood, I’d absolutely stop by. Would I drive
across town just for Eastside Deli? Maybe not every time—
but if I had friends visiting, you bet I’d make the trip.

The 2019 Cantadora
“The Sage”
Mourvedre is a GSV blend - 65% Grenache, 30%
Syrah, and 5% Viognier. Just like last week’s wine,
the grapes are sourced from the organically farmed
Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County. It spent 21
months in neutral French oak. It’s got dark fruit notes
along with pencil shavings, floral, and spice notes.
It’s got enough minerality to give you a superbly balanced
wine. It’s drinking extremely well right now.
Only 146 cases were produced.
Cantadora Wines was founded in 2021 by Kira Ballotta
to spotlight the stories of extraordinary women
giving back in novel and profound ways to our
shared community.
