WALKING SIERRA MADRE
The Social Side by Deanne Davis
I just realized that July is half over and 2025 is more than halfway
over. A singer-songwriter John and I always admired, Kate Wolf,
who is now singing her songs in heaven where John can enjoy them
with her, once recorded a Sandy Denny song entitled, “Who Knows
Where the Time Goes,” here’s a little bit for you…
“Across the evening sky,
all the birds are leaving,
But how can they know,
it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire,
I will still be dreaming,
I have no thought of time.
For who knows,
where the time goes?
Who knows,
where the time goes?”
School starts for granddaughters, Jessie and Emily, in just three weeks. Jessie will be a senior this year. Emily is going to band camp
next week and will be in the marching band this year. I’m sure you’re all thinking if you want to go someplace this summer, you better
get on it or it will be time for you to be buying new sneakers and a new backpack for your school people.
What with the fires in Eaton Canyon and the tragedy in Texas where so many people are still unaccounted for, it seems like a good
time to revisit the Word of the Year.
Each year I like to pick a Word of the Year. Rather than setting goals or resolutions based on improvements or fixing something in
your life (exercise more, lose weight, drink less coffee, watch less TV…sigh) we can start our year with a word that symbolizes our
intentions for the year ahead. As you may recall, my Word for the Year this year is:
Thankful
“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy,
and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” William Arthur Ward
“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His steadfast love endures forever.”
Ps. 107
So, listing a few of the things I’m Thankful for:
Breaking my femur in February didn’t kill me and I’m walking some without the walker.
Looking forward to being able to walk around the block again!
My family are all well and flourishing.
The Olive tree I planted in my front yard is growing.
Fall is coming and I can put all my pumpkins out and quit paying a fortune for A/C.
Speaking of Fall, thankful I don’t have to cook a turkey!
Ahhhh…Pumpkin Spice Lattes…truly Thankful!
I’m so Thankful I get to write this column each week and impart a little wisdom or foolishness.
“I have a lot to be thankful for: I am happy, healthy and I am loved.” Reba McEntire
Me, too, Reba! And even if you have to look under the bed to find something to be thankful for, there’s something there for you. Have
a great week and enjoy not having to get up early to get people ready for school just yet! The picture this week: Pumpkins!
“This is the day that the Lord has made! We will rejoice and be glad in it!”
