PASADENA'S MAYFIELD JUNIOR SCHOOL SUPPORTS
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS AND RESEARCH
(Pasadena, CA) – Mayfield Junior School continued its tradition of supporting Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, led by fourth-grade teacher Rebecca Seymour. Inspired by the loss of a beloved
colleague nearly 20 years ago, Seymour has been a passionate advocate for breast cancer
awareness, turning a loss into purposeful action.
What has now become an annual tradition, the entire MJS community—students, faculty,
and staff—raised funds for the American Cancer Society. In exchange for donations, students
enjoyed a Free Dress Day, proudly donning denim and pink—the signature color symbolizing
support for survivors, remem-brance of those lost, and hope for a cure.
The event was made possible in large part thanks to the support of Mayfield’s Student Council,
guided by Student Events & Activities Coordinator Lisa Byrne. Leading up to the event,
daily announcements during Morning Prayer and promotion throughout the campus helped
educate students about the im-portance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, reinforcing the
school's commitment to compassion and community action.
Adding to the initiative, students hosted a sweet treat sale to boost donations, and eighth
graders wrote reflections on the power of charitable giving and the importance of supporting
meaningful causes. Stu-dent Council members also played a role in collecting donations.
While strides have been made in the fight against breast cancer, the need for continued support
re-mains critical. Donations to the American Cancer Society help:
• Fund groundbreaking research to better understand, prevent, and treat cancer
• Provide vital information and support services for patients and their families
• Promote prevention and early detection strategies that save lives
Mayfield Junior School remains dedicated to making a difference, one act of kindness and
awareness at a time. Seymour announced that the school's fundraising goal was not only met,
but exceeded.
