WALKING SIERRA MADRE:
The Social Side by Deanne Davis

There is beauty in every January sunrise – A new day, a new opportunity
to grow.”

“You can do anything, but not everything at the same time.

You don’t have to figure everything out.

Restart as many times as needed.

Your inner peace is too expensive to be sacrificed.

Do more of what makes you forget about time.

The magic in New Beginnings is truly the most powerful.”

Unbelievably, we’re already halfway through January. The Christmas
decorations are all put away, except that one thing that we come across
that got left behind. I’ve got a metal pumpkin that’s still sitting out on
my patio table. I see it every day and think, “I’ve really got to put that
away,” then I walk away and totally forget it’s out there.

The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, it’s warming up just a bit and
I am delighted to report that on January 6th, my refrigerator, which
had been out of commission all of December, was repaired. Yes, there
was dancing in the streets, champagne was poured and every day I am
thrilled that it’s still working. I’m not confident enough yet to put all
my frozen food back in it, a lot of that is still residing in the small chest
freezer that I am fortunate enough to have. As we all know, rebuilding
trust takes a while.

The next big project I am going to tackle is to clear up storage space in my Gmail account.

Taking advice from the computer guy in the newspaper, I did the quick wins, i.e., empty my Spam and Trash folders. The
next step is to “Hunt Down the Space Hogs.” This means I really need to go through the millions, well, maybe not millions,
but hundreds of pictures that are superfluous. How many sunsets and sunrises do I need? How many newspaper
articles? As he says, years of full-resolution photos are eating the bulk of my space. This project won’t be quite as arduous
as putting away the Christmas decorations, but it will take time. Sigh… The picture this week is totally boastful. The
packed-up Christmas decorations all put away.

After months spent reading all the books in the “Candy-Coated Mystery” series, which features a nice girl who inherits
the historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop, and who encounters at least one murder in every book, and then solves
them with the help of local residents, her dog, and best friend, an event planner. This all takes place on Mackinac Island.
As the book promo says,

“Welcome to the Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop where life is sweet, revenge is sweeter, and murder is here to
stay.” The author, Nancy CoCo, not only writes a dandy mystery, but she includes incredible fudge recipes in every book.
I’ve read all 15 of them and enjoyed every word.

After those came to an end, I moved on to John Grisham’s newest, “The Widow.” This book, like all of Grisham’s, has a lot
of lawyers in it and this one is a dandy. Greed takes over a small town lawyer and he gets himself into one heck of a mess.
Loved every word and recommend it highly. After that, I moved into a really fun book by James Patterson and Tadd
Safran, “The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas.” This is fun, just suspend reality and enjoy it.

My sister had a hip replacement, she’s a hairdresser, barista, and bartender and has spent her entire life on her feet, which
led to the hip replacement. She has done nothing but read all month and, as she never has time for that, has enjoyed it
immensely. Time to read is wonderful, friends and neighbors. Maybe give yourself more of that this year. Our word for
2026 is KIND and you can start by being KIND to yourself and giving yourself time to read.

A few noteworthy days to celebrate in January:

• National Bath Safety Month

• National Blood Donor Month

• Braille Literacy Month

• National Hobby Month

• Hot Tea Month

• National Oatmeal Month

• National Soup Month

And if those aren’t enough or just don’t float
your boat, here are a few more:

 Festival of Sleep Day

Make Your Dream Come True Day

 Ditch New year’s Resolutions Day
(Don’t ditch ours, though, keep being
KIND)

 National Hugging Day

 Beer Can Appreciation Day

 Chinese New Year

And Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday on January
19th this year, traditionally celebrated
on the third Monday in January.

“Searching for ways to heal ourselves, kindness
is the best way.”

“Star of Wonder” a delightful Christmas
Kindle story, where four lonely people find
love

following a strange new star on Christmas
Eve, is there.

A nice love story is never a bad idea, even
after Christmas!
