Bomb Threat 
at Huntington 
Hospital


Copper Wire Thefts Target 
Rooftop Air Conditioning Units

 
Pasadena police gave the 
all-clear Friday morning after 
an extremist group made a 
bomb threat to Huntington 
Hospital shutting down traffic 
in the area of California Blvd 
between Pasadena Ave. and 
Fair Oaks Ave. 

 Huntington remained open 
during the search. 

 According to reports, the 
threat was called in at 5:49 
a.m. Police, firefighters and 
bomb-sniffing dogs searched 
the area. No threat was found. 
Police sent out the all-clear 
around 9: 20 a.m. 

 Police said an investigation 
was ongoing Friday.

 The Pasadena Police Department 
is urging business owners and 
property managers to remain 
vigilant following a recent increase 
in copper wire thefts from rooftop 
air conditioning units throughout 
the city.

 Recently, Pasadena businesses 
have fallen victim to these costly 
crimes, with losses often totaling 
thousands of dollars. Among the 
latest victims are Sweet Red Peach 
on Arroyo Parkway and Petsadena 
Pet Hospital on South Raymond 
Avenue. Although both businesses 
have remained open, the thefts 
have created unexpected financial 
burdens, including the purchase 
of portable air conditioning units, 
ice, and other temporary cooling 
solutions. With soaring high 
temperatures in recent days, the 
loss of air conditioning has also 
created difficult working conditions 
for employees and uncomfortable 
environments for customers.

 Rooftop HVAC units are 
particularly attractive targets 
because they are often out of public 
view and located on flat commercial 
buildings that are relatively easy to 
access. Many affected businesses 
are tenants, making it equally 
important for property owners and 
landlords to take proactive steps to 
protect their buildings.

 The Pasadena Police Department 
recommends a layered approach to 
security by:

- Restricting access to rooftops 
whenever possible

- Installing heavy-duty, tamper-
resistant steel cages around rooftop 
HVAC units

- Keeping ladders secured and 
locked away when not in use

-Installing motion-activated 
security cameras that immediately 
alert business owners or property 
managers to unauthorized rooftop 
activity

- Working with landlords and 
property managers to ensure 
rooftop equipment is properly 
protected

 In addition to the financial impact, 
copper theft poses significant safety 
risks. Individuals attempting to 
steal copper wiring often cut live 
grounding lines or tamper with 
electrical transformers, placing 
themselves at risk of serious injury 
or death. These crimes can also 
leave behind exposed electrical 
wires, creating fire hazards, traffic 
dangers, and the potential for severe 
electrical shocks to unsuspecting 
members of the public and utility 
workers.

 The Pasadena Police Department 
encourages anyone who observes 
suspicious activity around 
commercial buildings or rooftops 
to report it immediately. If you

Energy Goals

Applications Open for the 2027 Rose Court

 Tournament of Roses officials 
announced Monday that they 
will continue their treasured 
legacy of the Rose Court, with 
tryouts starting September 5. 
A tradition that has inspired 
its members to connect with 
their communities, give back 
in meaningful ways, and grow 
in self-confidence through 
valuable experiences. These 
are experiences that will not 
only enrich their lives but also 
have a lasting impact on the 
communities they serve.

 The Pasadena Tournament 
of Roses remains a long-
standing supporter of various 
educational initiatives and is 
proud to provide each Rose 
Court member with a $7,500 
educational scholarship.

 According to officials they 
are looking for applicants 
who bring diverse strengths 
and perspectives — whether 
they’re natural public 
speakers, youth leaders, 
academic stars, or community 
and school leaders. An 
applicant isn’t required to have 
all these skills; the selected 
Rose Court members will 
provide a well-rounded group 
that serves as ambassadors for 
the Tournament of Roses, the 
Pasadena community and the 
greater Los Angeles area.

 To be eligible, applicants 
must live and attend school 
full time within the Pasadena 
Area Community College 
District or one of seven 
additional eligible zip codes, 
including Eagle Rock, 
Highland Park, San Gabriel 
and Alhambra.

 The first round of Rose Court 
interviews will take place 
in Pasadena at Tournament 
House on Saturday, 
September 5, and Tuesday, 
September 8.

 The 2027 Rose Court will 
ride down Colorado Blvd. 
in the 138th Rose Parade 
presented by Honda and 
attend the College Football 
Playoff Quarterfinal at the 
113th Rose Bowl Game 
presented by Prudential, both 
on Friday, January 1, 2027.

 Pasadena Water and Power 
(PWP) officials anounced the 
release of two Requests for 
Proposals (RFPs) to advance 
Pasadena’s goal to provide 
100 percent carbon-free 
electricity by the end of 2030. 
These initiatives represent 
a significant investment in 
the future of local, carbon-
free energy and will increase 
deployment of clean energy 
resources they said.

 “Pasadena is committed to 
pursuing every opportunity 
that moves us closer to our 
carbon-free goals,” said David 
Reyes, General Manager of 
Pasadena Water and Power. 
“Achieving these goals requires 
innovative partnerships, 
forward-thinking solutions, 
and continued modernization 
of our utility. The initiatives 
outlined in these RFPs give 
our community new ways 
to engage in advancing 
Pasadena’s clean-energy 
future. Collaborative, creative 
partnerships are essential to 
PWP’s success.”

 The Design-Build Services 
for Solar and Energy Storage 
Installations at Select City-
Owned Properties RFP 
has a response deadline of 
September 30, 2026. The 
solicitation seeks design-
build solar and energy storage 
installations on 13 municipal 
properties including libraries, 
recreation centers, and 
parking lots. Collectively, 
the sites are expected to 
provide approximately 2.6 
megawatts (MW) of clean 
energy capacity and are 
targeted for completion by 
June 2028. Another RFP for 
a second phase of designs and 
installations on 14 additional 
City-owned properties, 
representing approximately 
6.1 MW of capacity, is 
expected to be published 
later this year with a targeted 
completion in 2029. PWP also 
expects to release additional 
RFPs in 2027.

 PWP also invites proposals 
for the Clean Power Pasadena 
Partnership (CP3) RFP, a new, 
initiative opportunity for large 
property owners and clean 
energy developers to build 
renewable energy projects 
and sell the energy directly to 
PWP. The RFP has a response 
deadline of October 30, 2026. 
Projects must be at least 200 
kilowatts in size and connect 
directly to PWP’s electric 
distribution system. To help 
reduce upfront costs, PWP will 
fund eligible interconnection 
work.

 The South Pasadena 
Police Department officials 
announced the return of 
its popular community 
event, Coffee with a Cop! 
The event will take place 
on Wednesday, August 19, 
from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 
at Twohey’s Restaurant, 
located at 424 South Fair 
Oaks Avenue, South 
Pasadena.

 Coffee with a Cop is 
a welcoming space for 
community members 
to engage with law 
enforcement in a casual 
environment. The event 
invites residents to sit down 
with local officers over a 
cup of coffee to discuss 
concerns, ask questions, 
and build relationships.

 This free event is open to 
all community members. 
Coffee and refreshments 
will be provided.

Announced 

 Pasadena Heritage announced 
Thursday that Craftsman Week 
2026 will be held October 11 
through October 18. 

 Each year, Pasadena Heritage’s 
Craftsman Week celebrates the 
enduring beauty, craftsmanship, 
and cultural legacy of the 
Arts and Crafts movement in 
Pasadena and beyond. Through 
a thoughtfully curated series of 
interior tours, walking tours, 
lectures, exhibitions, and 
hands-on craft demonstrations, 
the week invites the public to 
experience historic architecture 
and traditional artistry in 
meaningful and inspiring ways.

 Last year, Craftsman Week 
welcomed more than 1,200 
visitors from across the region, 
bringing together homeowners, 
designers, preservationists, 
artists, students, and families 
in a shared appreciation for 
craftsmanship and place. From 
rare opportunities to step inside 
significant historic homes 
to engaging conversations

Grant Extends Pool Season 

at Loma Alta Park in Altadena

 


 Thanks to a one-time grant 
provided by Supervisor 
Kathryn Barger, the summer 
pool season at Loma Alta Park 
in Altadena has been extended 
through September 30, giving 
families, seniors, and residents 
additional opportunities to 
stay active and beat the late-
summer heat. The extended 
schedule includes recreational 
swimming, lap swim, water 
exercise, swim lessons, and 
other aquatic programming.

 “Access to safe, affordable 
recreational opportunities 
is especially important as 
our Altadena community 
continues to recover and 
rebuild,” said Supervisor 
Kathryn Barger. “I was pleased 
to provide the funding that 
made this extended pool 
season possible so children, 
families, seniors, and residents 
of all ages can continue 
enjoying this valuable 
community resource.”

 The extended season will 
run from August 24 through 
September 30, 2026, at Loma 
Alta Park Pool, located at 3330 
N. Lincoln Ave. in Altadena. 
Programming includes lap 
swimming, recreational 
swimming, water exercise 
classes, swim lessons, and free 
morning lap swim for adults 
65 and older and persons with 
disabilities.

 The extension reflects 
Supervisor Barger’s continued 
commitment to investing 
in community wellness and 
ensuring Altadena residents 
have access to recreational 
programs that promote 
health, safety, and quality of 
life.
