stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and 
neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended 
vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a 
matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight 
and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities 
to early morning or evening. Take action when you see 
symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational 
Safety and Health Administration recommends 
scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air 
conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat 
should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

A TRUE SIERRA MADRE 
COMMUNITY ICON - 

ALAN LEAHY PASSES AWAY

Sierra Madrean Alan Jospeh Leahy, 94, passed away after 
more than 60 years of generously giving of his time and 
talents as a volunteer for numerous organizations in Sierra 
Madre and Los Angeles County.

His service included serving as the president of the St. 
Rita Men’s Club, the Holy Name Society, Parish Council, 
School Board, and the Finance Board. He regularly 
served breakfast at Pasadena’s Union Station shelter. He 
served on the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library Board as 
Treasurer and worked as a volunteer with the bi-monthly 
book sales for many years. Other service included work 
on the board of the Hear Center in Pasadena, the Sierra 
Madre Pioneer Cemetery board, the Sierra Madre Senior 
Commission, and as an assistant AYSO soccer coach 
(partial listing). 

The son of James Thomas and Catherine Rose Reisert 
Leahy, Alan was born in Brooklyn, New York and always 
carried his Brooklyn roots with him - most notably with his 
accent. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 69 years, 
Shirley (Malone), his much-loved children, Elizabeth, 
Kathleen (Phil) Bergauer, and Alan John (Luz); four 
grandsons: Stephen (Sam Singh) Bergauer, Kevin 
Bergauer, Alan Patrick Leahy and Andrew Leahy. He also 
leaves behind his older brother, Brother James T. Leahy, 
S.M. and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased
by his parents and his brothers Harold and Bill and sister
Catherine.

Alan was a graduate of St. Augustine High School in 
Brooklyn and of Fordham University, where he earned a 
degree in Accounting in 1954. He began his accounting 
career in Los Angeles and continued working there 
–eventually heading the CPA partnership of Leahy,
Hood, and Company. The firm moved from Los Angeles
to Pasadena in 1988. He worked with Ben Weingart and
the Weingart Foundation for nearly forty years and had
a number of clients who continued with him throughout
their lifetimes. He maintained his CPA practice until his
early 80s.

Alan loved to read on and discuss politics. From 1959-
1964 he was active in the Young Republicans and was a 
member of the Los Angeles County Central Committee 
from 1960-1964. 

Alan will be buried at Pioneer Cemetery in Sierra Madre. 
Services will be private. Donations in his memory may be
