The Sierra Madre City Council voted on whether to install an all-way stop at the intersection of East Grand View Avenue and North Cañon Avenue following weeks of legal review and public safety discussion centered on pedestrian access near Sierra Madre Middle School. The issue first came before the council during its March 24, 2026, meeting, when officials reviewed a Traffic Study and On-Street Parking Management Plan prepared by Willdan Group engineers. The broader study examined traffic control recommendations for several intersections across the city and included parking management proposals for West Grand View Avenue. City Council discussed the matter briefly again during the May 12, 2026, regular meeting. Council Member Edward Garcia joined via phone conference, and Council Member Robert Parkhurst had to recuse himself due to the proximity of his residence to the location being discussed. A brief presentation was given by Brian Dickinson, Director of Public Works. Although the engineering study did not recommend converting East Grand View Avenue and North Cañon Avenue into an all-way stop intersection, council members continued to discuss the possibility due to concerns about school-adjacent pedestrian safety. According to the study, the intersection does not meet the standard engineering warrants typically used to justify all-way stop control. Instead, consultants recommended improving crosswalk visibility and upgrading ADA- accessible corners at the location. The report noted that Sierra Madre Middle School is located roughly 700 feet south of the intersection and that an existing yellow- marked crosswalk already serves pedestrians on the east side of the crossing. The study also identified one reported collision within 50 feet of the intersection during the collision-history period reviewed. During the March meeting, council members questioned whether approving stop signs against the recommendation of the city’s traffic engineering consultant could expose the city to legal liability. Discussion included governmental immunities, driver expectations, and the legal implications of installing a traffic control device that does not (continued page 3) A PODCAST DEDICATED TO SIERRA MADRE It’s not often that one media outlet showcases other mechanisms to ‘spread the word’, however this publication, The Mountain Views News and its publisher, Susan Henderson, want to encourage everyone to check out Sierra Madre Podcast News, “a project to promote and highlight all things Sierra Madre”. Created by Former Mayor Glenn Lambdin, it features live interviews on what’s going on in town, including local government issues, local trends and more. As stated on its website: www.youtube.com/@SierraMadrePodcastNews, the most important emphasis is to, “keep the soul of Sierra Madre alive and vibrant”. Lambdin is a ‘home grown’ Sierra Madren. He attended Sierra Madre Elementary, Wilson Jr. High (at the time Sierra Madre did not have a middle school), and Pasadena High. He is also a Vietnam Veteran who served during the final years of the conflict. Lambdin served on the city council from 1998-2002 and has also been described as “an outspoken advocate for the truth”. The establishment of this podcast should not be a surprise to anyone who knows him, as all things Sierra Madre run through his veins. As of this edition of the paper, the podcast has produced 15 episodes with interviews from local organizations, city government, community leaders, volunteers and in general, life in Sierra Madre. Our strong recommendation whether you live in town or not is to log on to www.youtube.com/@SierraMadrePodcastNews, and take a look at what makes Sierra Madre so special.
