The Mount Wilson Trail Race is today!! After a two-year hiatus, it’s 
back and more exciting than ever. Kersting Court is full of fun things 
to see, and it’s the best time ever to be in Sierra Madre. Watching these 
awesome folks take off up Baldwin and then see the winners back down 
in an hour or so is an unforgettable sight. Why don’t you just plan to 
come and spend the day in town. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

 

It’s graduation season and the picture this week is granddaughter, Jessie, 
who graduated from high school last night! The program contained a 
wonderful blessing that you’re going to be glad you saw, especially if you 
have someone graduating in the next few weeks.

Graduation is a time to remember,

And a time to dream. A time to look back,

A time for songs of laughter, and a time for tears of joy.

A time for letting go,

And a time for discovering hopes and dreams that are yet unborn.

A time to say goodbye to yesterday,

And a time to greet tomorrow with courage.

That’s a great sendoff to a new beginning, isn’t it! Our family has attended many graduations and sat through some great 
remarks, some really boring remarks and some really really long forgettable remarks. My favorite graduation speech of all 
time is the “Wear Sunscreen” speech by Mary Schmich. Ms. Schmich is a journalist, columnist for the Chicago Tribune 
from 1992 to 2021, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 2012. Although the famous “Wear Sunscreen” speech was never actually 
delivered at a graduation ceremony, it lives on and is frequently quoted. Originally an essay published on June 1, 1997 as 
a hypothetical commencement address, it contains some of the best advice graduates could ever receive. Here are a few 
highlights:

“Wear sunscreen. If I could offer only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have 
been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

Don’t worry abut the future, or worry., but know that worry is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing 
bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your mind. The kind that blindside you at 
4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s 
only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. 

But trust me on the sunscreen.”

1630 AM EMERGENCY RADIO & 

Free on-air publicity for local events

 Sierra Madre’s EMERGENCY radio station is now accepting scripts for 
Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about community events. PSAs will 
be broadcast on the air at no charge. The station operates 24/7 and can be 
heard at 1630 on the AM dial.

 Any local non-profit or non-commercial organization can have their 
event information broadcast to the public on Sierra Madre Community 
Information Radio. The station covers the city of Sierra Madre, plus 
surrounding areas of Pasadena, Arcadia, and Monrovia. 

Your event must:

• Benefit a non-commercial or non-profit entity
• Be open to the public
• Be of general interest to local citizens

write a Public Service Announcement that describes your event and 
e-mail it to radio@cityofsierramadre.com.
