Sierra Madre, Ca. 91024Daily attendance in local schools has continued to be a problem after COVID. Duarte Unified
School District lost approximately $1,977,000 due to absences last year. To help focus on this
problem, Fedelia Suleiman focuses on Child Welfare Attendance for the district. She partners
with counselors at each school site. This year, every school site within the district has a counselor
on site for the first time. She and Naelh Othman shared information with the Duarte Kiwanis
Club at a recent meeting. This year, the number of Foster Children in the district has increased
to 22. There are currently 164 children who are considered homeless. The Kiwanis Club helps
support these children by providing donations to cover unmet needs - a bus pass for a child
living in various motels, gas money for a mom to get her child to school, a gift card for food,
a certificate for clothes at a local business. Truly, they help provide an investment in these
children for the future - and for the future of the community. Pictured from left Duarte Kiwanis
