REPORT TO COUNCIL ON STONEGATE PROJECT
REVISIONS DELAYED

NATE’S VERY EXCELLENT IDEA!

According to City Manager Elaine Aguilar, the property at 610 Baldwin Court will not be on the
December 9th City Council agenda. As a result of conflicting schedules, the parties representing
the owner of the property and Sierra Madre City Council members Denise Delmar and Gene
Goss were unable to meet before Tuesdays meeting. Therefore, because of the holidays, the
matter will be heard at the council’s first meeting of the new year, January 13th.

WHO ARE THOSE MEN IN RED?

In early October when most children were
planning their Halloween costumes, six year old
canyon resident Nate Howes was thinking about
what he could do to improve the condition of the
bridge over the “Wash” in the Canyon. He said
to his father, “Dad, our bridge is the ugliest in the
canyon! Can we paint it?” His father, Ryan Howes
replied, that “he would have to ask for permission
first because our bridge is owned by the city.
According to his dad, “Nate marched back to our
house, pulled out a sheet of lined first-grader paper
and said “Who’s the mayor?”

“We wrote a letter with our request and a few
days later received a response, with approval
from the mayor, an offer to donate supplies, and a
compliment on Nate’s willingness to contribute to
social change, not just complain about it.”

The City was pleased to give Nate permission
to clean-up and paint the bridge and picked
November 22nd as the date for the project. Nate
and his father met briefly with staff to go over the
details and began to recruit additional boys and
girls to help with the project.

For project day, staff had rigged a tarp under
the footbridge to avoid any paint or pollutants
from entering the wash and Nate led a number of
volunteers to clear a small amount of vegetation
and old wiring from the handrails, wire-brush the

bridge to remove loose materials, and apply the
paint. Approximately a dozen local elementary
school-aged kids accomplished the entire job on a
Saturday afternoon.

Congratulations and thanks to this young man
for setting an example for residents, young and old.

Stay tuned, I’m certain we will hear more good
things from this young man.

Early morning visitors to Kersting Court last week were likely to have run into members of Major
League Soccer’s (MLS) Toronto FC’s. The team, along with five coaches came to Sierra Madre as part
of their off season Cross Training. Their trainer, none other than Sierra Madre’s own Jim Liston
of CATZ Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Center, is also their Director of Sports Science.

When in town, the team has a favorite spot, Sierra Juice, where owner Nora Graham (third from
left above) replenishes their energy with her fresh fruit smoothies. On Tuesday they ran the Mount
Wilson Trail to Orchard Camp despite the rain. They will end this round of cross training on
Sunday in Manhattan Beach on the sand dunes.

YES, THAT WAS SNOW IN SIERRA MADRE!

If you didn’t attend the
Sierra Madre Winter
Festival (formerly
WhoVille and Dicken’s
Village), you missed an
entire day of fund.

Sponsored by the Sierra
Madre Chamber of
Commerce and chaired
by local realtor and
Chamber Board member
Carol Canterbury, the
event was designed to not
only kick off the holiday
shopping season, but
also to showcase local
non-profit organizations,
support the Girl and Boy
Scout fundraising efforts,
introduce visitors to our
unique village and to
have fun while doing so.
The Friends of the Arts
also held an Art Walk
throughout the day.

The day included live entertainment, horse and carriage rides, snow sledding and train rides for
the children. And of course, Santa, assisted by the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association Princesses,
arrived in his big red fire engine chariot for the day and greeting youngsters in a custom made chair,
designed and manufactured by Tonia Biely Patino!

The evening ended with the movie Elf in Kersting Court. Many thanks to the Kiwanis Club for
serving free hot cider and chocolate to keep everyone warm as the sun went down.

Special thanks also goes to: (Partial listing): Cellist Michelle Beauchesne who lead students from
Gooden, Sierra Madre Elementary, Sierra Madre Middle School, Pasadena High School and UC
Davis. The students performed on their cellos and violas. The Grimm Family Carolers with Gianna
and Andrew Halpin, the Alverno High School girls, Luis Ayala, Fred Thomas, Sue Lavoe, Amanda
Burnett, Manny Solis, Pat Ancona, Sharon Pevsner, Barry Schwam, Pat Coburn, Bank of the West,
The City of Sierra Madre, Village Auto. Sierra Honda, Boy Scout Troop 373, Susan Henderson, the
