MONROVIA POLICE BLOTTER
GROCERY OUTLET DISCOUNT MARKET TO OPEN STORE IN DUARTE
POLICE DEPARTMENT CASES OF
NOTE FROM LAST WEEK
There were two particular cases handled by members of our
outstanding Police Department last week that I wanted to share.
On Monday, September 28, 2015, a fight ensued in the 100 block
of South Encinitas between several male individuals. One of the
individuals pulled out a knife and stabbed a male victim several
times, and two suspects fled the area. Our Police Officers arrived
shortly thereafter and coordinated the medical treatment and
transport of the stabbing victim to a local hospital. During the
search for suspects, our Police Officers were able to locate and arrest
one of the two suspects. The identity of the outstanding suspect
was identified and a “Wanted Person” notification was sent to the
surrounding area. Soon thereafter, the suspect was located and
arrested in a neighboring city and is now in custody.
On Monday, September 28, 2015, a murder occurred in the City
of Montebello. A man armed with an assault rifle shot and killed
another man and then fled the area. During the investigation by the
Montebello Police Department, the West San Gabriel Valley Task
Force, which is made up of officers from several law enforcement
agencies throughout the San Gabriel Valley, was called in to assist in
locating the suspect. Monrovia Police Department’s very own Police
Officer Damien Bartholomy, who serves on the West San Gabriel
Valley Task Force, worked the case expertly, and ultimately, the team
was able to locate, surveil, and safely take the suspect into custody.
Outstanding work by an outstanding team in one of the premier
law enforcement agencies around… great work by our Monrovia
Police Department personnel!
The Duarte community has reason to celebrate! The former Mike’s Food
location, 1322 Huntington Dr., will be the new home for Grocery Outlet
Market. The retail space is 18,000 square feet and each Grocery Outlet store
is a local, independently run, family business.
Grocery Outlet is the nation’s largest extreme value grocery retailer that
offers brand name, quality products at up to 60% off conventional retail
prices. Shoppers can find trusted name brands such as Kraft, Kellogg’s, Tide,
Tyson, Amy’s Kitchen, Naked Juice and other well-known names. This year
alone, shoppers have saved more than $1 billion on products purchased at
Grocery Outlet as compared to traditional grocery stores. The chain is able
to keep prices low due to their expert buyers who specialize in purchasing
product overruns and surplus inventories.
More good news! The property owner is also in the process of a major
façade enhancement for a 1/3 of the shopping center, including the former
Mike’s Foods, Young’s Gourmet, the barbershop and Little Cesar’s pizza.
The City of Duarte Community Development Department has already
approved plans and construction is scheduled to begin before the end of the
2015.

PALEO SOLUTIONS HERE IN
MONROVIA SET TO RECEIVE
THE REMAINS OF A
4 MILLION YEAR OLD WHALE
As you may have heard by now, the nearly intact fossil of a 4-million
year old mysticete whale (an ancestor of the baleen whale) was
unearthed at a construction site in Santa Cruz County in early
September 2015. The remains of the ancient whale are currently
being transported here to Monrovia, which is home to the company
Paleo Solutions.
Paleo Solutions was established in 2004 and provides
paleontological and archaeological services throughout California
and other western states. City staff reached out to representatives of
Paleo Solutions this last week in hopes of developing some original
media content highlighting the company and the prehistoric whale
remains being sent to Monrovia. Company representatives were
very appreciative of the gesture, and we agreed to do an in-depth
interview in a few weeks after the whale fossils arrive and company
representatives have had a chance to examine the remains. We will
continue to monitor this story and will be sure to provide additional
information after additional discussions occur with Paleo Solutions
staff.
NINTH ANNUAL SAN GABRIEL VALLEY HIV/AIDS ACTION SUMMIT
City of Hope’s Ninth Annual San Gabriel Valley HIV/AIDS Action
Summit will bring together nearly 250 San Gabriel Valley high school
students, HIV/AIDS experts and patient advocates to discuss, and help
raise awareness of, the prevention, treatment and ultimate cure of HIV
and AIDS.
In partnership with former State Assemblymember Anthony J.
Portantino, this year’s summit will identify common challenges and
stigmas associated with HIV/AIDS and explore new interventions in
HIV prevention.
“I am extremely excited to be co-hosting the San Gabriel Valley’s
Ninth annual HIV/AIDS Action Summit with City of Hope again this
year,” said Portantino. “Our summit continues to be on the cutting edge
of promoting HIV education and advancing important public policy
discussions. The number of health care professionals and local health
academy students who have benefited from this world-class summit
continues to grow every year. It’s making a difference in the San Gabriel
Valley and positively affecting the HIV discourse throughout Los

RECAP OF SECOND
PROPOSITION 218 / MONROVIA
RENEWAL COMMUNITY MEETING
The City hosted a second community meeting on Tuesday, September 29,
2015, to provide additional information regarding our current Proposition
218 process and the Monrovia Renewal project. Around a dozen residents
participated in the meeting, where staff provided an overview of the
process that was engaged to develop the overall proposed water and sewer
fee adjustments. As part of the discussion, we also provided an overview
highlighting how the proposed fee increases were tied to the Monrovia
Renewal capital improvement program. A copy of the presentation that was
utilized to guide the discussion has been uploaded to our website here. City
staff will present this overview again at our meeting on October 6, 2015,
during the Proposition 218 Public Hearing in consideration of the rate
adjustments.
