During the week of Sunday, October 18th, to Sunday, October 25th, the
Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 281 calls for
service.
Sunday, October 18th At 1:09 am, Sierra Madre Police responded to the
00 block of South Baldwin Avenue of the Post Office Lobby regarding
a suspicious package. Officers arrived and located the package on the
counter inside the lobby and visually inspected the package which was
wrapped with brown paper without a return address and was addressed
to the House of Lords in England. Los Angeles County Arson and
Explosives Detail responded to investigate the box. Without a return
address the owner of the package could not be located. Los Angeles
County determined the package to be safe.
Monday, October 19th At 10:23 pm, Sierra Madre Police responded to the
500 block of Santa Anita Ct regarding an audible burglary alarm. Upon
arrival Officers discovered the rear sliding glass door of the residence was
smashed with glass on the ground. Officers cleared the residence of having
any suspects inside. Officers were approached by a neighbor and were
informed that at around 10:20 pm, the neighbor heard an alarm go off and
his dog started barking. His wife went outside to see where the alarm was
coming from and discovered it was coming from his neighbor’s home who
was currently away. The neighbor was able to contact the homeowner and
helped Officers conduct a walk-through of the home via live stream video.
The homeowner informed Officers that he noticed his safe containing
collectible coins was missing, as well as a firearm. The victim’s home was
ransacked and property loss would be evaluated when the homeowner
returned. This case has been forwarded to the Detective Bureau.
Sunday, October 25th At 9:52 am, Sierra Madre Police responded to the
station lobby regarding a suspicious circumstance that occurred at the 00
block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, the reporting party turned
in a suspicious device she found. The woman stated earlier that day at
around 9:30 am, she went to mail a package at a local drop off box when
she noticed a string hanging from the opening of the drop off box. The
woman pulled on the string and a device with adhesive on it was attached
to the other end. She believed it was a device that is used to retrieve
packages and brought it into the station to dispose of it. Officers inspected
the device and confirmed it had an extremely strong sticky substance on
one side to allow it to attach to packages, and at a later time the suspect
would return to the drop box and “fish” out the package. The woman
stated she did not see who had placed the device in the box, nor did she see
anyone in the area. This case has been forwarded to the Detective Bureau.

GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY
AT THE COMMUNITY PLANTING DAY!
Sierra Madre, CA. - After months of landscape
demolition, grading and irrigation work, the
Community Planting Day is finally here! The Sierra
Madre Garden Club and City of Sierra Madre
are seeking eager volunteers to help replenish
the landscape outside City Hall with beautiful
drought-resistant plants. The event is part of a
joint community project aimed at saving water and
demonstrating the beauty and economic benefits of
native plant gardens!
Rain or shine, members of the community
will be gathering in downtown Sierra Madre on
November 7th to plant 200-300 plants on the
grounds surrounding City Hall and the Police
and Fire Station. The project was made possible
through generous grants and donations from the
community. As the City was unable to contribute
financial resources to the landscape project, the
City of Sierra Madre owes a special debt of gratitude
to those organizations and individuals who stepped
in to bring this project to life. Including, but not
limited to:
The Sierra Madre Garden Club
The Sierra Madre Community Foundation
FormLA Landscaping
LA County Board Supervisor Michael D.
Antonovich, Fifth District
San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District
The Sierra Madre Senior Community
Commission
The Neiby Family
Glenn & Amy Putnam
Richard Wilson
The Community Planting Day will take place
outside City Hall on November 7, 2015 from 9:00AM
– 12:00PM. Volunteers for the event are advised
to bring adequate gardening gear including: hats,
gloves, sunblock, as well as digging and trenching
shovels. The San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water
District will provide water and Girl Scout Troop
2991 will be on hand with refreshments.
