I AM READY FOR PINOT !!

We don’t often visit the same winery (no need to
as there are plenty of wines to write about, that
is for sure!), but recently I learned that one of
my all time favorite pinot’s changed ownership.
That’s usually not a big deal, unless they are
going to change locations, which never happens
at wineries.

Fall is in the air, and therefore it is always a
good time to discover pinot noir. The Meiomi
Pinot Noir 2012 is the quintessential pinot
noir. During my “nose test”, I immediately
noticed a good, spicy scent of alcohol. You
may want to allow the wine to get some air for
several minutes to avoid this effect. Sipping the
Meiomi Pinot Noir, I noticed flavors of multiple
bright berries. This lighter and brighter flavor
contrasted well with the heavy appearance
and milky mouth feel. Additionally, I noticed
an initial chaos of complexity in the first taste.
Things settled down a bit after the wine had a
chance to breathe, releasing alluring aromas of
fresh vanilla and a hint of raspberry, and, for you
“oaky” lovers a small hint of that, too. This wine
is a true find, and I like it! It has a big taste for a
pinot - not too complex, with a great finish. All
in all, I found it very enjoyable.

Meiomi (may-oh-mee) is a native Wappo and
Yuki tribes word meaning “coast”. As you wine
lovers may know, pinot noir grapes can be a little
tricky. They must have the right climate and the
right soil. Originally hailing from Burgundy, it
now prospers in Sonoma County, Mendocino,
and Santa Barbara County. It’s a perfect wine
for football season.

Retails around $25; on sale $19, wide distribution
throughout So Cal

For something a little easier on the pocket book
a good entry-level pinot is the Mark West - for
almost half the price it is drinkable and user
friendly.

Dills Score: 90

Each week I will give you my Dills Score. Starting
with a base of 50 points, I have added 8 points
for color, 7 points for aroma or “nose”, 8 points
for taste, 8 points for
finish, and 9 points for
my overall impression,
which includes my
value rating.
