MAD AREA NEWS By Joan Schmidt
So many great happenings: the 8th Annual Veterans Forum at the Azusa Armory. MC was Hector
Elizalde, Deputy District Director for Congresswoman Grace Napolitano. She spoke as well
as Congresswoman Judy Chu, L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger and Assemblywoman
Blanca Rubio. West Covina Mayor Lloyd Johnson lead the Pledge of Allegiance, Glendora
Council Member Karen Davis, the Opening Prayer, and Azusa Mayor Joseph Rocca welcomed
us.
There was a special presentation of Certificates to Viet Nam Veteran Ruben Valencia, best friend
of Raul Guerra, a U.S. Navy Journalist, who was killed in a plane crash over Viet Nam, fifty-
two years ago. In 2007, the remains of the seven men who died in that crash made their way
to Hawaii; they were interred at Arlington Cemetery, except for Raul’s. His remains could not
be identified; he had been adopted in Mexico. Ruben would not give up, and with a group of
friends, lobbied politicians. Raul was finally brought home, and there was a beautiful Mass at St.
Alphonus Church, East Los Angeles, and burial at Rose hills. Also attending Raul’s services was
Mary Barrow Sometlott, Raul’s fiancée who was so moved and grateful for all who came to honor
Raul. Because of Ruben and members of the Committee who worked so long to bring Raul
home to be laid to rest, the Congresswomen, Supervisor Barger and Assemblywoman Rubio all
had special Certificates of Recognition.
In addition, all Viet Nam Veterans in attendance received the Viet Nam Lapel Pin with an
explanation of the pin and a Proclamation from the President on the 50th Anniversary of the
Viet Nam War.
During the day there were four panels of discussion: Veterans Administration, Mental Health,
Education and Combating Homelessness. Two Guys Grilling provided lunch, Starbucks, coffee
and there were tables with info flyers and freebies. It was outstanding.
On Saturday, June 29, Father Eugene Herbert officially stepped down as Pastor of Annunciation
Church, Arcadia. Bagpipe players led Father’s Procession into the Church where he celebrated a
special trilingual Mass. The beautiful Vietnamese choir performed and also Mariachi. Following
Mass, the Bagpipe players led Father and the Procession to the Hall for a special reception.
The Town Council is grateful to Father Herbert and Annunciation Church. Since its inception,
Council Meetings have been held at Annunciation.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Next Town Council Meeting, Wednesday, July 17, 7pm , All Nations
Church, 1948 Peck Road, Monrovia. Also the Station Square Summer Concert Series has begun
on Saturday evenings at 6:30, and runs through August 24. Sunday, Monrovia also has concerts
