2021 MT. WILSON TRAIL RACE A GREAT SUCCESS


Last Saturday’s 2021 Mt. Wilson 
Trail Race was a resounding success, 
after being sidelined last year 
due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It 
was a great day with enthusiastic 
runners, excited children, kind 
weather; a day that really brought 
the entire greater Sierra Madre 
running community and community 
at large together. Serving 
as this year’s MWTR starters were 
long time MWTR finishers, Sierra 
Madre’s own Ralph West and Bill 
Dickey of Arcadia. 

Almost 225 runners completed 
the 8.6-mile course that began in 
Kersting Court, up Baldwin Ave., 
to Mira Monte Ave., to Orchard 
Camp and back (a total elevation 
gain of over 2,160 feet. The runners 
were cheered on by enthusiastic 
family, friends, children, and 
numerous others. All race participants 
finished safely with smiles 
on their faces.

Immediately following the start 
of the 2021 MWTR, the MWTR 
Kids’ Fun Run (Ages 3 – 13) began 
in Kersting Court. The start of the 
Kids’ Fun Run is staggered, with 
children ages 8 – 13 beginning first 
and then followed by children ages 
3 – 7. At least 50 excited children 
rushed to the turn-around and 
back. All Kid’s Fun Run participants 
received a T-shirt designed 
by a local Sierra Madre student 
and a lovely finishers ribbon.

The Mt. Wilson Trail Race is one 
of the few races that has a beer 
garden to celebrate the day, share 
race accomplishments, and come 
together. The proceeds from the 
MWTR Beer Garden were donated 
to Sierra Madre Search & 
Rescue, which celebrates its 70th 
anniversary of saving lives in the 
wilderness this weekend. The Beer 
Garden at Friday Night’s Pre-Race 
Pasta Dinner was sponsored by Sierra 
Madre’s RT Rogers Brewing 
Company, the proceeds of which 
were also donated to Sierra Madre 
Search & Rescue. 

The Trail Race Committee, led by 
Race Director, Pete Siberell, plans 
and works year-round to deliver a 
successful MWTR every year. It 
takes a village to be this successful 
and everyone came together 
to make this year’s MWTR happen 
again this year as well. This 
included the announcers, awards, 
bag check, banners, beer gardens, 
bike rails, booth sponsors, donors, 
food, ham radio operators, music/
sound, pre-race pasta dinner, posters, 
publicity, race T-shirts, registration, 
set-up/take-down, Sierra 
Madre Boy Scouts Troop 110, Sierra 
Madre CERT, Sierra Madre City 
Staff, Sierra Madre Cub Scouts 
Troop 110, Sierra Madre Fire Department, 
Sierra Madre Police 
Department, Sierra Madre Search 
& Rescue, souvenirs, staging, timing, 
ongoing trail maintenance, 
training program, volunteers, and 
water.

Set your calendars now because 
the 2022 Mt. Wilson Trail Race 
is scheduled for Saturday, May 
28, 2022. The MWTR Committee 
is already looking forward to 
another race with even more participants 
next year. Check the Mt. 
Wilson Trail Race website for information 
as it is posted and also 
to learn about the outstanding 
16-week MWTR training program
led by Simon Cooper of Invictus
Running Academy. The MWTR
Training Program will begin in
late January 2022 and is designed
to accommodate beginner and advanced 
runners. In its 6th year, the 
MWTR Training Program is an
excellent way to train to complete
the Mt. Wilson Trail Race.

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association is pleased to announce the selection of the 
2022 Sierra Madre Rose Float Association Royal Court. Please help us welcome Alex 
Bielanski, Julia Pevsner and Abby Pejsa who will represent SMRFA and the City of 
Sierra Madre over the coming year. Ms. Bielanski is a junior at the California School 
of the Arts SGV, Ms. Pevsner is a junior at Maranatha High School and Ms. Pejsa is a 
sophomore at LaSalle High School.

MADRE’S WINTER VILLAGE IS BACK*!

The Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce is once again 
hosting its’ Winter Village/Shop Sierra Madre on Saturday, 
November 27, 2021. The festival includes fun for the entire 
family. A real Snow slide, Santa Claus and his helpers, 
Lighting of the Sierra Madre Christmas Tree, Crafters and 
much more. The event, formerly known as Dicken’s Village 
and ‘WhoVille’, is also the official kick off of the holiday 
shopping season and an effort to bring shoppers into Sierra 
Madre to support our local retailers.

 Chamber President Luther Tsinoglou wants to remind the 
community that, “Supporting the Sierra Madre Community 
in its entirety is the mission of the Sierra Madre Chamber 
and is one of the reasons that events like Winter Village 
are so important. It brings both local families and local 
businesses together and encourages others to make Sierra 
Madre a destination for shopping and fun.”

Since the pandemic, the Chamber has struggled to work 
diligently to continue activities supporting the Sierra Madre 
Community. Despite cancellations of the 2020 and 2021 
Wistaria festivals due to COVID 19, the Chamber assisted 
the City with the creation of the business ‘Care’ grants and 
the outdoor eating areas to help businesses keep their doors 
open. The group circulated information via print and social 
media on the businesses that remained opened; hosted a 
modified Shop Sierra Madre/Winter Village in 2020 which 
included an appearance by Santa and distanced photo ops 
for children; hosted a virtual Honors/Citizen of The Year 
Dinner which also supported Sierra Madre restaurants; held 
a 2020 Municipal Election Forum in Memorial Park (and 
streamed online) to give residents the opportunity to see 
and hear the residents running for elected office, and much 
more.

Scarecrow Festival is pleased to 
announce the winners for Most 
Popular Business and Most 
Popular Residential entries.

 

In the Business Category, 
first place goes to The Sierra 
Madre Public Library “The 
Day the Crayons Came to 
the Library”; second place 
goes to The Only Place in 
Town “Winnie the Pooh and 
Friends,” and third place is a 
tie between Mt Wilson Train 
Race, “Meet Mr. Wilson” and 
Lunch Salon, “Rapunzel.”

 

In the Residential Category, 
first place goes to “Ghost 
Buster Venkman” (#94) second 
place goes to “Luca” (#73), and 
third place goes to “Mariposa 
Madre” (#98).

 

This year’s Festival, coordinated by 
Chair Jennifer Shamlian, celebrates 
the creativity of all participants. 
This year, scarecrows were entered 
by 31 local businesses and more 
than 75 residents and represented 
a wonderful diversity of themes. 
And though the official contest 
is over, the Scarecrows are still 
emerging for everyone to enjoy.

 

“This year’s entries were as creative 
as I have ever seen,” remarked Creative 
Arts Group Executive Director 
Kristin Naran. “I am constantly 
amazed by what people create out 
of simple materials. It is wonderful 
to see this tradition in Sierra 
Madre. Thank you to everyone 
who participated.”

 

All winners were selected by the 
community through votes entered 
on Facebook and submitted paper 
ballots. Each will receive a commemorative 
award from Creative 
Arts Group.
