With HARVEY HYDE

I’m Back!

Yes I am, and I am really glad that I’m back with a paper that
I’ve respected for so long, The Mountain Views News! Not
only does it cover Sierra Madre, but also Pasadena, South Pasadena,
San Marino, Altadena, Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte and
Bradbury…..it’s almost like one if the great conferences – The
Big 12 or the Pac 12!

This column will focus on what’s happening in the world of
sports from a variety of perspectives. Sports has always been
a big part of my life, especially football, so this column which
will run twice a month will share my take on what is going on locally, nationally or worldwide!
And I don’t want to just appeal to the adults in the room, but to our young people – our future
sports stars. You never know what the future holds.

You know, I was one of those kids who could have easily gone the other way, made the wrong
choices in life because school – academics- just wasn’t of any interest to me but SPORTS &
ATHLETICS were. Fortunately, the vehicle for access to sports was school and organized community
sports.

As a kid, playing sports anytime, anywhere was what my friends and I looked forward to every
day. We used to play anywhere we could, on the street, on empty lots, anywhere, despite the
warnings of the adults….”look out for the cars”……”you’d better get home before dark”. We
heard them, but we just wanted to play - anytime, anywhere we could. And today, things
haven’t really changed that much. Every kid who is interested in sports has that same enthusiasm
that we had years ago. And you know what, every kid actually has talent waiting to be
unleased. It may be sports or the arts or academics, whatever it is as adults our focus should be
to help them identify that talent and encourage them to pursue their interests (not yours). We
need to encourage our youth to be the best that they can be whatever their choice is.

Now, as for me, Harvey Hyde, football coach, broadcaster, writer, columnist, etc., I can say that
Sports have made my life complete. I have been blessed to be able to earn a living doing something
that I love so I really don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life!

SPORTS - participating and even in some instances even spectating, teaches one discipline,
teamwork, respect, and how to be competitive. As a coach, I used to always tell my players to
learn the 4 words/phrases that will open doors for you: PLEASE, THANK YOU, YES MA’AM,
YES SIR and MAY I HELP YOU. Even in sports, as with life, those words will take you far.

Yes, I know you were expecting something different in this first column but just know that while
SPORTS is what we will be talking about, today I thought it was more important to talk about
life and what I’ve gotten from it as an athlete.

Game Day is Every Day. You have to compete every single day for everyone is trying to win.
You've got to be proud of who you are and what you do.

Learning the hard way is not what we want our kids to do, but we want them to know that things
don't come easy. You're not a champion by just saying it. Treat people like you want to be
treated. Life first, Sports later. That kept me on the right side of the tracks.

Kids - Like it or not, we had to go to school to be eligible. Nothing has changed. Sports kept me
involved in who I was. Identify who you are and what you can excel in. It is the foundation of
Life. Remember, if you don't put the steel in the foundation, it will blow down.

And To The Adults Remember: Whether you are a parent, coach, counselor or teacher, you are
influencing a young person's life.

And by the way, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY.
