HUDDLE UP

With HARVEY HYDE

Well, it's time to huddle up and buckle up again. How time
flies by. And before I run out of space, let me wish a happy,
happy 4th of July to you, your families and everyone. I'm
sure that we will all be at a parade somewhere and looking
up to the sky for the fireworks somewhere. I have enjoyed
always standing for the National Anthem before all the athletic
events I have coached or attended. I remember the sacrifices
that have been made for us to be able to attend these
great events. So let’s celebrate this very special birthday for
our nation.

Now let's get down to business: What is the most frequent question I am almost always asked
now when people walk up to me on the street? “Hey, Coach, what do you think of USC and
UCLA going to the BIG TEN?”

Answer: I hate to see the PAC 12 and BIG TEN tradition that has been such a wonderful
relationship with the Rose Bowl come to an end.

The next three years will be College Football playoff games at the Rose Bowl, which means
some of the special events that have always surrounded the Rose Bowl game will disappear.
There will be no more Lawry’s Prime Rib dinner, no Disneyland for the visiting teams and a
lot of other traditions will just disappear. Who knows what will happen after that.

Locations for the play offs will alternate. Next year the quarterfinal game will be at the
Rose Bowl, and the year after that, the Semi finals. The teams that play will be here exactly
2 days before the game and the winning team will fly out to a game the next week for the
semi-finals.

I do think it may be great for us here to get national exposure for West Coast football. USC
and UCLA players will get attention with Big Ten media. Each school (USC/UCLA)will
receive $100 million dollars per year as a result of the move. The Big 10, who extended the
offer in the first place, is very happy because of all that USC and UCLA bring to the table.

The PAC 12 also loses a lot which is partly their own fault. With better leadership along the
way this might never have happened. With the commissioners recent television package,
exposure for the PAC 12 declined.

Some of the responsibility also lies with the Presidents of the Pac 12 schools. They must have
supported this television mistake since renewed the contract. The PAC 12 fell far behind
the Southeastern Conference, The Big Ten, the Big 12, with television exposure and revenue
period.

USC and UCLA will experience more income, bigger crowds, national exposure, better recruiting
options. Games will be broadcast in more prime time slots. Odd late night TV
games will not happen

In 2024 the PAC 12 may see other interesting changes. San Diego State has given notice
to the Mountain West Conference that they are planning to change conferences, which
will probably be the PAC 10, 12, whatever you want to call it. Washington and Oregon will
probably stay. Why? Because they'll have a better opportunity of making the playoffs. With
UCLA and USC gone they will be dominant in the conference.

But let's not forget there's still a 2023 football season and we've got to go ahead from here -
we've got to play the 2023 season before we're even affected by the 2024 movement of UCLA
at USC to the Big Ten.

The sad aspect of this is in regards the Rose Bowl New Years Day tradition. The Rose Bowl
has no guarantee on what day they'll play, and maybe not even on New Year's Day.

In summary, I think going to the BIG Ten is a good opportunity for USC and UCLA. But
time will tell. Now you know what I think about UCLA, USC moving to the Big Ten.

Happy 4th of July. You can hear more by following me @coachharveyhyde.com.
