HUDDLE UP

With HARVEY HYDE

“WHAT A SHAME”

Finally! The college football season has begun. Week
Number One: The PAC 12 had 13 wins and no losses.
This provided some welcome positivity after the turmoil
of the PAC-12- to PAC-2 events of last month. A great result
for the first week, and a little bit sad looking ahead.

What a show the PAC-12 quarterbacks displayed for the
conference. All schools were represented with skill and
offensive efforts. These talented teams certainly deserved
national recognition for this first week of play. Each week, I list my own “Top Twelve”
teams. Four of those teams were in the PAC 12. And look at the scores. Utah—24
points; USC--66 points; Washington – 56 points; Oregon – 81 points; and the
remaining teams did well also. Oregon State—42 points; Cal – 58 points; Stanford –
34 points; Colorado—45 points; points; Arizona--38 points. No matter how you look
at it, these are very impressive numbers.

Now, this week, reality may set in for some. Someone is going to lose. USC vs. Stanford
and going forward some stronger opponents, This week: Wisconsin, Nebraska,
Baylor for Washing ton State, Colorado and Utah and others. As many of you realize,
we are looking at possibly the end of the great traditions of the PAC 8-10-12. Some of
the “glory years” of seasons gone by. Traditions and games already changed. What
happens to the records made and recorded? I guess now just memories, but what great
ones!

How about the Rose Bowl PAC and Big TEN match ups with legends: USC’s John
McKay, John Robinson, Pete Carroll. UCLA’s Terry Donahue, Tommy Prothro. Washington’s
Jim Owens, Don James. ASU’s John Cooper, Stanford’s John Ralston, Jim
Harbaugh… just to name a few. How about those Big TEN names. Ohio State’s Woody
Hayes, Earl Bruce. Michigan’s Bo Schembechler. Wisconsin’s Barry Alverez; Iowa’s
Hayden Fry; Michigan State’s Duffy Daugherty. You old timers out there..,do you remember
more? I know I have missed a few of these legends.

For today, let’s congratulate Prime Time Deion Sanders (and his QB son). He did it
“with style.” He sure did! He backed it up. We can look forward to a sold out Rose
Bowl when Colorado plays UCLA on October 28th. We’ll watch to see if his interviews
provide good ‘fight talk’ to opposing teams to come.

As a side note: Here's hoping for you football fans who won’t or can’t get to games,
(or just want to see everything,) that your teams are able to be seen on television on
some channel or network or station. I’m including college and professional games
here. This is the new fan challenge (which I have predicted would come.) We will be
paying more for our entertainment. Will be learning how to sign up for special shows
and highlights. Will have to choose which leagues and teams we want to watch on a
regular basis. We can look for the PAC 12 network, the Big TEN network, the NFL
network, the Fantasy football network, and if we wish, the SEC network etc. and on
and on. Just open your wallets.

This first week has been a good one for the PAC 12 (possible finale year) whether we
like it or not, the end. It’s going to be hard to see the PACa 12 go away. But as George
Allen used to say, “The future is now!” Let’s enjoy the final year! Hope your team
wins.
