“A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is
blowing, the birds are singing and the lawnmower is broken.”
James Dent
“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”
Mark Twain (I totally agree!)
“A lot of parents pack up their troubles and send them off to summer
camp.” Raymond Duncan
Have you been through the new Library yet? You haven’t?? You
need to go! There was a fabulous turnout for the grand openinglast Saturday and the picture today is of the New Books Cart.
There’s a Teen Space, which is a new innovation. The Children’s
Room is better than ever and there is so much space and light and
new places to work, study and just enjoy reading.
I came across an article not long ago by Harvey Mackay entitled,
“Open a book, open a mind.”
I’d like to share some of his thoughts with you…
“Norman Cousins said, “There is a simple non-medical technique
for increasing longevity. This system goes by the name of ‘book.’
Through it, a person can live hundreds of lifetimes in one. What
is more, they can enjoy fabulous options; take possession of an
experience, live inside the mind of any man who has recorded
interesting thought, anyone who has opened up new slices of
knowledge, anyone who has engaged in depth of feeling or
awareness beyond the scope of most mortals. This is what good
books are all about.”
Inscribed on the Thomas Jefferson Building at the Library of
Congress are the first eight words of this quotation by HenryDavid Thoreau: “Books are the treasured wealth of the world and
the fit inheritance of generations and nations.”
Here’s something I didn’t know: People who read business books
earn more money…a lot more! According to several studies,
businesspeople who read at least seven business books a year
earn over 2.3 times more than those who read only one per year!
Why? New ideas and strategies, new ways of thinking and problem
solving.
Barnes & Noble has a list of the best-selling books currently, all of
which you’ll be able to find in the New Books Cart:
“Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir – This was turned into
a great movie, which we all enjoyed.
“Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt – This
was also turned into a reallygreat movie starring Sally Fields, which I loved and cried through.
Who knew an octopus could make such an endearing companion.
“Theo of Golden” by Allen Levi – Sounds fascinating,
about the power of generosity, the importance of connection,
and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and
wonder. I’m definitely going to read this one.

“Oh, the Places You’ll Go! By Dr. Seuss – So nice to see this timeless
favorite still on the best-seller list.
There are so many more, sci-fi, Dungeon Crawler books, some
self-help and lots more fiction of every description.
Books can be a source of comfort and solace, an escape from the
stresses of daily life. They can reduce stress, improve our mood,
and provide continuous learning. I have so many favorite authors:
Betty MacDonald (The Egg and I), Pat Conroy, Jack Smith (Long
time columnist for the Los Angeles Times, and I wish I wrote as
well as he did), Erma Bombeck. Oh, my friends and neighbors,
books are life! When our Sierra Madre house on Alegria was on
the market after John went to heaven, I donated 475 books to the
Sierra Madre Library. Too many books, my realtor said!
Go visit our new library and see the wonders that are there for you
to read. Take the children.
Little reminder: Father’s Day is June 21st! Get your dad a card and
take him to tour the library.
Check out my book page: Deanne Davis: Amazon.comGreat stories there about all sorts of adventures.
