City Warns of Scams Acting

as Public Health Officials

The Pasadena Public Health
Department (PPHD) is
warning the community
to be vigilant followingmultiple reports of scammersimpersonating public health
officials to obtain sensitive
personal and financial
information. There have been
no reports of this type of scamin Pasadena, but reports havebeen made to the California
Department of Public Health(CDPH).

These scams mirror similar
attempts at fraud across thecountry. While CDPH andPPHD may reach out to
individuals for legitimate
public health purposes,
such as disease contact
tracing, these calls will neverinvolve requests for SocialSecurity numbers, credit
card information, or data not
related to your health. ?

 “We want to make Pasadena
residents aware of scams
involving individuals
impersonating public health
officials to obtain personalinformation,” said Director
of Public Health, Manuel
Carmona. “We encourageeveryone to remain vigilantabout phone and online
scams.”

Recent reports include
scammers claiming a
prescription was filled in the
victim’s name and urgingimmediate verification
to “clear their record” byproviding or “verifying”
personal information. In
some cases, scammers
have escalated the ruse by
transferring victims to a
video call with an individual
impersonating a police officeror other authority figure in a

fake uniform and fabricated
recording room.

 These schemes often involve
coordinated callers who
reference CDPH names,
badge numbers, or phonelines to appear legitimate.
They may request personaldetails such as dates of birth
or driver license numbers,
direct victims to download
encrypted apps for video calls,
or attempt to access personaldevices.

The callers rely on urgencyand threats, such as legal
consequences or canceled
prescriptions, and sometimes
direct people to meet at aSacramento address. To
bolster the ruse, they spoofCDPH phone numbers and
use fabricated credentials.
In some cases, the behaviorescalates into repeated calls orthreatening text messages. ??
If you receive a suspicious call:
Hang up immediately.
Contact CDPH directly at(916) 558-1784.
If you believe you are thevictim of fraud, contact the
Pasadena Police Departmentat (626) 744-4241.
Report the incident to theFederal Trade Commission at
