STUART TOLCHIN

WANDERING THROUGH THE
NEIGHBORHOOD

What a history we have. The area that we all now visit
to shop and dine was the largest assembly center holding
over 18,000 Japanese internees. While growing up in
Boyle Heights my wife’s grandparents housed a youngJapanese girl whose family had been interred.

It all seems so ironic in that today Arcadia which bordersSierra Madre is now known as “The Chinese Beverly Hills”. In fact, just acouple of months ago, the Chinese mayor of Arcadia, Eileen Wang, resignedafter pleading guilty as a foreign agent for the People’s Republic of China.
For over a month I have spent many hours in my son’s hospital room wherehe is being treated for pancreatitis and a recently revealed autoimmune
disease. I wish I could explain more about the disease, but I am unable toreally understand much. Part of the reason for my lack of understanding ismy difficulties with hearing combined with the memory loss typical of my
age. Another important reason is that there are three languages spoken bymost of the medical staff in the Hospital and I fail to understand any oneof them.

The three languages are Spanish, an Asian Language, and “ hospitalese.” I
don’t speak or understand any of these languages. The “hospitalese” spokenby the Medical Staff is typically spoken behind masks often along with anaccent, which makes it very difficult to hear or understand. The languageis filled with acronyms which are rarely explained and further uses termsnot easily understood by non-medical people. Additionally, there is aproblem associated with the fact that the entire staff of the Hospital wearsvery similar clothing and I am frequently confused as to whether my familyand I are speaking with a physician, a nurse, a physical therapist, or a personwhose responsibility is just to clean the room and change the sheets.

My confusion led to what could have been a very severe problem. When
one of the final Dodger Games was available in my son’s room a staff-personwas present and I asked, politely, I thought, if that person would assist us ingetting the game on the television. The person ignored me and eventuallysaid “that’s not my job” and I replied that I thought the job of the wholestaff was to make the patient comfortable. I really don’t know what the jobof that person was, but very soon two Security Guards with guns appearedat the door to my son’s room demanding to talk with me. They said, afterI asked them to remove their guns which they refused to do, that I hadcaused a disturbance and they wanted to hear my side of the story. Well,
the matter was resolved and we eventually got the game on TV, but I havebeen cautioned by my wife and daughter to keep my mouth shut. Even myson, who rarely speaks let me know he would rather I kept quiet; but eventhrough his illness he let me know that he cared about my feelings and said“I love you daddy” and “don’t get lost” as I left. Even though he is terrifiedabout his own condition he has not abandoned his concern for me.

I realize that my difficulties related to aging affect understanding muchof what goes on, but at the same time I realize that my family is loving andthat we can all stick together. Yesterday, after seeing my son. my wife andI went to a Japanese restaurant for lunch. As we were seated at the table a
man came in and placed a wallet on our table. It was my wallet and he said
he saw me drop it I the parking lot. I didn’t think much about it and placedthe wallet in my jacket from which I guess it had fallen. Later I counted the
cash in the wallet and realized it contained almost 100 dollars in addition
to my credit card.

One more thing which you might have difficulty believing is that a coupleof days earlier my wife and I, as we were leaving the Hospital we found overone hundred dollars in cash lying on the ground. There was no one around
to give the money to, so my wife kept it. All I am saying is that things changefrom day to day and there have been many changes in our little town, butit remains a wonderful place to live and, yes, sometimes, I feel someone orsomething is watching over us and it is our job to adjust.

NOTE FROM STUART’S WIFE: IT’S ALL TRUE

HOWARD Hays As I See It

“This economy is so unaffordable that I’m going to have to downgrade from

LGBTQ+ to LGBTQ with ads.” – zaza historia posting on Threads

We’re days before the midterm elections – with anxiety over not just what theresults might be, but what might happen in response to those results. For now,
though, here are some favorite posts from October:
The White House posts: “America will establish a permanent presence on themoon.” Heidi responds: “You couldn’t paint a pool.”
From Janel Comeau: “You kids may not believe this, but things were so stable 15 years ago thatthe news had to start reporting on people seeing Jesus in their toast”.

A globe dating back to the 1930’s, reportedly used by Gen. Eisenhower during WWII, wasbadly damaged by the staff of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as they were moving it to hisoffice at the Pentagon. Tommy Vietor posts: “Kind of a perfect metaphor for Hegseth’s entire
tenure at DOD. Stupid, impulsive, driven by vanity and the result is destruction”.

Interviewed on Fox News, Vice President J.D. Vance described Russian President Putin as
“more soft-spoken than you would necessarily expect . . . And I think fundamentally he’s aperson who looks out for the interests as he sees it of Russia.” David Corn responds: “Praisingan indicted war criminal and dictator who bombs civilian sites and kidnaps children to destroya neighboring democracy. This is deplorable.” From Phillips P. Obrien: “Here is Vance sayingPutin is a much misunderstood, sensible mass murderer.”
President Trump says, “It’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.” Joe Walsh responds:
“Trump is a coward. Zelensky is a warrior. Trump is a pathological liar. Zelensky is a
truth teller. Trump is a scoundrel Zelensky is a hero. Trump kisses Putin’s a**. Zelensky is
kicking Putin’s a**. Trump is a traitor to the free world. Zelensky is defending the free world.”
Anton Gerashchenko posts from Ukraine: “Someone should explain to the US president thatappointing Ukraine’s president is not part of his job description.”

Trump posts: “I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine,
and don’t want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table”.
Marina notes: “Excusing the aggressor while lecturing the victim is not a diplomatic strategy.
It’s kissing up to Putin.” Trump adds, “Russia is doing very little, if anything, to help the
Islamic Republic of Iran”. Surge asks, “How does Trump know that Russia is doing very little
to help Iran? Because Putin told him?”

At a Kansas rally, Trump brags about a recent cognitive exam: “The first one is they show youa lion, a bear, a snake, and a giraffe, and they say, 'Which one is the giraffe?' . . . I got a perfectscore." Gary Crooks responds: “Great job. Here’s a cookie”.
In North Carolina, V.P. Vance advises the crowd: "Vote for the people who have solutions tolower the cost of gas, don't vote for the people who made the problem to begin with." From
Chuck Todd: “To paraphrase Inigo Montoya: ‘I do not think this means what you think thismeans.’”

At a rally in Iowa, Republican Congressional candidate Joe Mitchell presents Trump (“thegreatest president we’ve ever had”) a framed certificate commemorating his being initialrecipient of the “Man of the Century” award. Mimzy reacts: “Another fake award made at
Michaels frame shop for $15.” Josh Billinoson notes: “No one has ever won both the FIFA
Peace Prize and the Citizens of Iowa Man Of The Century award in the same year”. From
Frank Lucchese-Soto: “How many participation trophies does one man need?”
Barack Obama goes viral with a clip from an Ohio rally where he says about Trump, “He’sgot the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory”. CNN’s
Scott Jennings complains, “Makes speeches for 500k a pop . . . Undefeated at condescendingto regular folks”. Andrew Egger at The Bulwark responds: “At $500k a pop, Obama wouldhave to give a speech every night for the next twelve years to match the $2.2 billion in openlycorrupt income Trump pulled in in 2025 alone”. From Harry Sisson: “MAGA is more upsetabout Obama making fun of Trump’s White House renovations than they are about Trumpdestroying the economy and plunging us into war nobody wanted.”
Trump wants to preemptively toss out results of Alaska’s Senate race because of two candidateshaving the same name on the ballot – with one labeled “incumbent”. Trump says, “people aretotally confused”, and “a lot of people don’t know what incumbent means”. Scott Greenfield
cites a prior quote from Trump: “’Most people don’t know that dumb is spelled with a b’ –
DJT”. From Keith Olberman: “Translation: HE just found out what ‘incumbent’ means”.
From msgiggles: “But seriously, imagine telling someone 15 years ago that Donald Trump ofApprentice fame is the President and Nicki Minaj of Young Money and Beez in the Trap is thepress secretary”. Reacting to Nicki Minaj being considered for White House press secretary,
Gov. Newsom’s office posts: “We can only pray.”

And finally, from chase: “A bunch of first graders were on my subway car this morning takinga field trip to a museum. They don’t even know that’s pretty much as good as it gets.”

RICH JOHNSON

SONG TITLES YOU'LL NOT FORGET

As you might be able to deduce if you’ve endured my column forany length of time, music is a big part of my life. It’s the fault of4 fellows who invaded my brain. As best I can recall their names
were John, Paul George and…Roger? Wait a minute! Something’snot right.

Oh yeah, Roger is my brother. The fourth fellow’s name is Richard.
No, not me. Richard Starkey. You may know him better as Ringo. They formeda band named after an insect. I think out of devotion to Buddy Holly and hisCricketts. They were called the Beatles. They invaded my brain February 9, 1964.
They were on a show called the Ed Sullivan Show. I was 12 at the time. That wasnot the day the music died. It was the day the music woke up…at least in my brain.
I needed a guitar…fast. It didn’t take too long. It was probably the top of the lineguitar available at Montgomery Wards Department Store. Where my mom worked.
She got a discount. As thankful as I was, I cannot recommend anyone buying aguitar from Montgomery Wards or Sears and Roebuck. Your fingers will thank youif you avoid those retail outlets. It’s fair. I mean, I don’t buy paint or underwear atGuitar Center.
Anyway, my life was completely changed…permanently. And here I am about toturn 75 years old on Halloween. And what am I doing? My rock and roll band, JJJukebox is in concert at Nano Café in Sierra Madre on my birthday Halloween. The
concert will be over by the time you read this. So, you’re out of danger.
I was in my first music group at age 15. And my first public performance, I was
a very mature 15 1/2. I was as part of a church folk group headed by a German
25-year-old UCLA Physics Ph.D. student named Ray. Important to note that Rayplayed the banjo and, because he was of German ancestry, he sang with all thefinesse you might expect from a German military marching song.
So, here I am 60 and a half years later making music.
Speaking of music, no one is ever too old to pick up an instrument and startmaking noise…err music. Music is a wonderful outlet for the psyche. The benefitof learning to play a guitar for example, you can turn all of your complaining intosongs. Maybe friends will comfort you. Or if they don’t like the music, they may
give you money,
There are songs by famous people that demonstrate a cathartic process. Othersongs cause you to lose the will to keep going. Stick with group A. Some of these
songs are:

“In Spite of Ourselves”. Some of the repeatable lyrics include: “He ain’t too sharpbut he gets things done, Drinks his beer like it’s oxygen.”
“I’ve Got All This Ringing in My Ears and None on My Fingers” (Popular weddingsong)
“Anyone Else But You” (Another popular wedding song)
“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” (The aftermath of every wedding song)
“You’re the Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly”
“I’m So Miserable Without You, It’s Just Like Having You Around”
“You Can’t Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd”
“Champagne for My Real Friends, Real Pain for My Sham Friends”
“The Yodeling Veterinarian of the Alps”
“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini”
“Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow”
“I’ve Got All This Ringing in my Ears and None on My FingersSongs from films that stand out.
From the movie parody of the Life of Jesus, Monty Pythons “Life of Brian”
“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”
“Get Busy Living, Or Get Busy DyingThe most played song in history?
“Happy Birthday!”
Most Overplayed Songs:
“Happy Birthday”
“Stairway to Heaven”
“Bohemian Rhapsody”
“Don’t Stop Believin’”
Well I have to shove off and go rehearse. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Or in.
Or around. Have a great week…or is it weak?
