FOUR SHOWS FOR CHILDREN
PRESENTED IN REPERTORY AT
SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE ALL
SUMMER LONG. STARTS JUNE 26.

June Chandler’s Fairy Tale Theatre launches its summer
Repertory on June 26 with the opening of the musical The Frog
Prince. Four interactive Children's shows, (2 being musicals),
will alternate Saturdays, 11:00 and 2:00 through September 25.

The Frog Prince June 26, July 24, Sept. 11

Treasure Island July 3, July 31,Sept. 18

Sleeping Beauty July 10, Aug. 21, Sept. 4

Dorothy and

the Wizard of Oz July 17, Aug. 28, Sept. 25

The Tale of the Frog Prince opens June 26, 11:00 and 2:00

We invite all kids to become froggies in our swamp. The evil
witch has turned the handsome Prince into a frog. He's sad and
lonely and needs you as his friends to sing and dance and play
with him. He is waiting and hoping that somewhere there is a
lovely girl who could see past his ugly green exterior and love
him for who he really is inside. Then, her kiss would break the
witch's spell and he would become a handsome prince once
more.

All shows in the Fairy Tale Theatre season are "Participation"
plays. The children in the audience play an active part from
their seats, wearing costumes, talking to the characters, and
then meeting all the costumed characters for autographs after
the show. Sometimes a few of the braver kids are invited on
stage to play roles in the scenes.

In”Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz,” the kids oil the tin man
, stuff the scarecrow and play poppies in the field. In “Sleeping
Beauty,” they all play flowers for Sleeping Beauty's wedding
bouquet and some play the Queens doctor and nurse, decorate
the wedding arbor and play Flower Girl and Ring Bearer at the
wedding. In “Treasure Island,” two crews are picked to sail
with the good ship and the pirate ship. All the audience create
a terrible storm at sea, a mosquito infested jungle and sing
with the crew. In the tale of “The Frog Prince,” all the kids play
froggies in the pond from their seats and are invited to sing and
dance with their Frog Prince friend.

June Chandler and thirty adult actors from Sierra Madre and
outlying areas have been very busy devoting their time and
creative efforts to giving children the magical gift of theatre all
summer long at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. Their goal is for all
children to COME PLAY AT THE PLAYHOUSE and fall in love
with theatre forever.

The shows are written by Steve and Kathy Hotchner, music
byBill Roser. Directed by June Chandler. Musical Director is
Christopher Callen. Produced by special arrangement with the
Dramatic Publishing Company.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults and $12 for children under 12
years. Online ticketing at www.sierramadreplayhouse.org.
Reservations call 626-355-4318. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is
at 87 West Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, Ca. 91024. There is
ample free parking behind the theatre.

KICKING OFF MORE THAN
A SPARKLING JULY 4TH
CELEBRATION AT THE
ARBORETUM

The California Philharmonic opens its 2010
summer season with “America the Beautiful:
A Powerful Patriotic Performance”

Grammy-award winning singer and actor Brian McKnight
and pianist Bryan Pezzone will appear as guest artists

Saturday, June 26, 2010; 7:30 p.m.;

His recordings have gone platinum, his fans number in the
tens of millions, and the awards he has garnered range from the
Grammys and American Music Awards to the NAACP Image
and BET Awards. But when singer and actor Brian McKnight
joins the California Philharmonic on Saturday, June 26 at
7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic
Garden in Arcadia and on Sunday, June 27, at 2 p.m. at Walt
Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles for “America
the Beautiful: A Powerful Patriotic Performance,” he’ll take on
a role his fans might not at first expect. McKnight will narrate
composer Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait.

But for Dr. Victor Vener, founder and Music Director of Cal
Phil, selecting McKnight to help kick off the orchestra’s 2010
Summer Season – and pay tribute to President Abraham Lincoln
– was a superb choice.

“Brian is a legendary leader in his own right,” Vener explains.
“There’s nothing he has tackled that he hasn’t excelled at,
whether it’s as a singer who’s sold over 20 million albums, as a
nationally syndicated host on ABC Radio, or as a member of the
team at Extra! I’m so looking forward to introducing Brian to
our audiences at The Arboretum and Disney Hall. I’ve no doubt
they’ll give him the star-spangled welcome he deserves.”

Nor will McKnight be the only star joining Cal Phil at its
‘powerful patriotic performance.’ Pianist Bryan Pezzone will
appear as soloist when the orchestra presents George Gershwin’s
Rhapsody in Blue.

“If you watch television or go to the movies, there’s a good
chance you’ve heard Bryan perform,” says Vener, who played
French horn and earned a doctorate in music performance from
USC before turning to conducting. “The range of composers he’s
worked with is amazing, from John Adams to John Williams.”

Pezzone is also the pianist in the
ensemble Free Flight, a crossover
classical/jazz quartet. “Rhapsody
in Blue was originally written for
solo piano and jazz band in 1924,”
Vener relates. “Bryan’s versatility as
an artist – he is equally comfortable
in the classical and jazz worlds –
guarantees that this performance of
one of the most popular American
works ever written will stand out as
one of the most memorable.”

Also on the program for “America
the Beautiful” are Tchaikovsky’s
1812 Overture, Copland’s
Appalachian Spring and a medley
of stirring marches by John Philip
Sousa. At The Arboretum, the
concert will include a pyrotechnics
display as well.”

“America the Beautiful” will begin
on Saturday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m.,
when the gates to The Arboretum
open for picnicking. Four vendors
– including Robin’s Wood Fire BBQ
& Grill, Bristol Farms and Neomeze
Restaurant Bar and Lounge – will
provide food on site as well. Wine
will be provided by redwhite+bluezz.
And, as has happened in the past,
live jazz performances will take place
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Parking on site is
available. The Arboretum is located
at 301 North Baldwin Avenue in
Arcadia. For more information or
to order tickets/subscriptions, visit
www.calphil.org or call 626.300.8200.
