BLAIR PRINCIPAL APPOINTED SUPERINTENDENT
OF MAMMOTH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Pasadena Unified School
District (PUSD) announced
that Rich Boccia, Principal
of Blair International
Baccalaureate (IB) School,
will end his 30-year tenure
with the district to become
Superintendent of Mammoth
Unified School District.
Boccia began his teaching
career in PUSD as a
Kindergarten teacher, and
moved up the ranks as an
elementary school and a
middle school principal, prior
to assuming the top leadership
position at Blair IB School eight
years ago.
“Blair’s academic performance
has improved dramatically over
the past several years under
Mr. Boccia’s leadership,” said
Edwin Diaz, Superintendent.
“Blair students have benefited
immensely from Rich’s ability
to collaborate with parents and
community, and his energy
and enthusiasm will be sorely
missed.”
“This is a once in a lifetime
opportunity that is a dream
come true,” said Boccia. “I will
always be eternally grateful to
the Pasadena Community for
their support to me over these
past thirty years. I love you all
very dearly."
Boccia led Blair IB School
to a 71-point increase in its
Academic Performance Index
(API) score, and established and
expanded the highly-regarded
International Baccalaureate
(IB) program to include a
Middle Years and Diploma
program in grades 6-12. He has
nurtured strong partnerships
with community organizations
and businesses to expand
instructional opportunities for
students in the Health Careers
academy and other programs.
Boccia also played a critical
leadership role in developing
the successful facilities bond
measure which will upgrade
the Blair IB School Complex.
"This is an exciting time in my
life and I leave knowing that I
have made a difference in the
lives of many, many students
and their families,” Boccia
stated. “Thank you for the
memories."
A much-loved figure in the
Pasadena community, Boccia
was perhaps best known for
coining the phrase: ‘We are the
few, we are the proud, we are
the Vikings!’
Boccia was introduced at the
Mammoth Unified School
District governing board
meeting last evening, June 10th,
which was also his birthday,
as the new Superintendent
of Schools, effective July
1st. A national search for
his replacement will begin
immediately, and will include
extensive input from parents,
students and community
members.

Sierra Madre Hoops Winner
PUSD STUDENTS
WIN GOLD IN
COUNTY MATH
COMPETITION
A team of eighth-grade
students from Sierra Madre
School won first place overall
in the L.A. County Math
Field Day competition held
last weekend.
The annual event drew
students from 23 districts
throughout LA County.
Sierra Madre’s team won a
gold medal in the annual
regional contest, which tests
students’ mathematical skills
and knowledge.
“I want to congratulate
the winning team, and
their teachers and families
for their hard work,” said
Superintendent Edwin
Diaz. “This is a wonderful
accomplishment that reflects
the quality and strength of
PUSD’s math program.”
PUSD schools represented
in the competition included
McKinley in the fourth grade
level, Sierra Madre School in
the fifth, seventh and eighth
grade level, and Marshall
in the sixth grade level.
The eighth grade team was
coached by Dan Martinez.
In the competition, students
pit their problem solving,
conceptual understanding,
and computational and
procedural skills against
other student teams. More
than 300 students in grades
4-8 participated.

The hours of operation have
changed for summer starting
Friday, June 11th. The park
will be open 8am everyday
until school starts again.
Bonita Skate Park located
on Second Avenue and
Huntington in Arcadia is
10,700 square feet of fun for
skateboarders and in-line

park in which to practice and
perfect their skills. Classes
will be held at the skate park in
spring. For more information
please call 626.574.5113.
For the safety of everyone at
the park, the following rules
are in place for Bonita Skate

• All users are required
to wear a helmet, kneepads
and elbow pads. Those
not wearing protective
equipment can be cited for
an infraction and required to
pay a fine.
• The park is for
skateboarding and skating
only. Bicycles and scooters
are not allowed.
• Additional obstacles,
ramps and jumps may not be
used at the park.
• No food or drink
is allowed on the skating
surface. No glass is allowed
in or around the skating area
The City of Arcadia does not assume
any responsibility for injuries that

may result in serious injury.
Sierra Madre 8th grader Rayjon Moore won third place in the
national iHoops Skills Challenge in Orlando, Florida last month.

the national competition. His advice to other kids who want to
compete in the future: “try your best, never give up and have a
good attitude,” he says.

Dad, I Love You-
Write the Right
Words to Connect Hearts,
Sandra E. Lamb, lifestyle and etiquette
expert and award-winning author,
offers sage advice on how to create
the best Father's Day ever, without
spending a lot. Lamb also talks about
how to tell Dad that he's the best, in
words that will melt his heart, based
on her new book,
Write the Right Words
Q. No budget?
A. The best gift for Dad this Father's
Day is the "Love Coupon" that requires
only a bit of paper, some crayons,
and a lot of love to make some loving
memories of this special day. Mom
and the kids just need to come up with
some great gift ideas the kids can write
in. What about a promise to polish
Dad's shoes, clean his workshop, take
out the garbage, or pack a lunch for a
fly fishing day? Your kids will come up
with some perfect ideas for their dad.
Q. What about a very special message
for Dad?
A. Instead of buying a greeting card,
you might want to use photos or
print some out of your favorite "Dad"
moments from the past year, and
write your own very special message
expressing how great Dad is. Focus on
him. Start with one of his attributes,
then give an example.
Q. How can we start a Father's
Day annual tradition that includes
Grandpa, too?
A. Warm family memories are often
about traditions. They don't need to
be anything spectacular, or take a
casting crew and big screen budget
to produce. How about an annual
backyard barbecue, a picnic in the
park, or a family softball game, or even
horseshoes. Make your own special
family traditions from of Sandra
Lamb's suggestions.
Q. Can you name a few more gift ideas?
A. Special day trips with the kids, like
a ball game, or trip to the zoo will be
some of the best gifts.
Go to WorldVisionGifts.org to create a
family tradition and a special Father's Day.
