Do you know what to do if “Fido”
gets sick or injured? Do you know
where to go in the event of an
emergency that may require you
to evacuate your home for a few
days, such as the wild-land fires
we experienced last year? These
are just some of the topics that
will be discussed, and answered
at the first annual Sierra Madre
Fire Department “Pet First-Aid
and CPR event” to be held on
Saturday, July 17th, 2010.

The event will take place at
La Salle High School, located
at 3880 E. Sierra Madre Blvd.,
Pasadena in the dining hall
located off Michillinda Blvd.

 The Pet First-Aid and CPR
event will be hosted by the Sierra
Madre Fire Department, and
Sunny-dog Ink. The event will be
sponsored by the “Only Place in
Town” in Sierra Madre. Sabrina
Somma, a Paramedic with the
Department (pictured above),
is the individual responsible
for making this event become
a reality. Somma developed the
idea of the event, as she believes
that many times “Fido” and our
other furry friends are forgotten
or left behind in the event of an
emergency or a fire.

 Denise Fleck, owner of Sunny-
dog Ink, will be the keynote
speaker. Ms. Fleck is a true
animal advocate, as well as
an instructor in pet first-aid
and CPR (cardio pulmonary
resuscitation).

 During the event, participants
will be able to visit multiple
vendor tables and booths, and
listen to Somma and Fleck
discuss topics such as; What is
pet first-aid?; How do you deal
with a choking pet? and How do
you assist with rescue breathing
and administer CPR to a small
animal?. Additional topics will
include; How to check your
pet’s vital signs; How to deal
with your pet in heat and cold
emergencies, as well as, How
to take care of wilderness type
pet emergencies such as; snake
bites, bee stings, ticks, and
much, much more.

 The Sierra Madre Fire
Department and Sunny-dog
Ink hopes you will join them
on July 17, 2010 for this very
informative event.

The cost is $15.00 per person
if you pay prior to the event or
$20.00 per person entrance fee
on the day of the event.

 Please send checks for the
entrance fee to: Sierra Madre
Fire Dept., 242 W. Sierra Madre
Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024.
Make the checks payable to:
SMVFA.

You may also sign up for this
program at www.sunnydogink.
com.

All of the proceeds for this
event will go to animal charity,
and to benefit the Sierra Madre
Fire Department Emergency
Medical Services Program.

Please note: We all love our
furry friends, however, please
leave them home for this event.
Thank you, we hope to see you
at the “Pet Event.”

 The SMVFD will introduce the
new equipment to the members
of the department next month.
This equipment is designed
to assist in the resuscitation
of a dog or cat or other small
animal during a fire or other
emergency event. Members
of the department will receive
training on this equipment, and
the equipment will be carried on
Rescue Ambulance 41.

 Human life safety will always
be the primary concern and
job of the Sierra Madre Fire
Department; however, we can
now attempt to assist a small
animal on scene if we are able
to do so without compromising
human life.
