Break Out the Bands!
A Fourth of July Music Fest
Three contemporary bands will rock Sierra Madre’s
Memorial Park during the Fourth of July Weekend.
Aluminum Marshmallow, Saturday, July 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
Known for their exhilarating “Age of Aquarius Horns,”
Aluminum Marshmallow will once again command the
stage with their energetic performances of classic 60s and
70s rock. A perennial favorite with Sierra Madre audiences,
this local group was originally started in 1967 at St. Rita
School by seventh graders Tom Behren and Greg Pineda.
The capstone of their career as teenage “rockers” was
achieved when they took first place at the school’s annual
Talent Contest.
The young men’s musical aspirations were put on hold as
they pursued other ambitions, but the dream never died.
Seven years ago they reunited, adding Bob Loza, Scott Rowe
and Jim Hickey into the mix. With the unfortunate passing
of Pineda in January 2009, horn player Ron Oda stepped up
to the plate as lead guitarist and vocalist.
Aluminum Marshmallow regularly performs in venues
around town. Sierra Madreans obviously can’t get enough
of the band, whose energy, skill and love of the classic rock
repertoire keeps them coming back for more.
Rocktail, Sunday, July 4th at 5:30 p.m.
This classic rock cover band will be appearing for the first
time on the bandshell stage. Rocktail was formed in 1995,
when several friends decided to “get together, have a little
fun and blow off some steam.” Lead guitarist Brad Hay and
bass player Jack Roemer grew up together in Ohio, and
have been friends for more than 40 years. They are joined
by Sierra Madrean Bret Hardy on drums, who is “excited
about playing amongst friends.” David MacDonald is the
band’s lead singer and newest addition to the group. The
band specializes in classic rock and invites their audiences
to sing along with their familiar favorites.
Night Blooming Jazzmen, Monday, July 5th at Noon
Immediately following the parade will be a concert by
the Night Blooming Jazzman, well-known to Sierra Madre
audiences. The group was started in 1975 by Chet Jaeger,
whose members now range in age from the 40s into the
80s. A dedicated horn player, Jaeger is amused to recall
the countless cornets he had worn out over the years. This
versatile group has a wide repertoire, which makes them
appeal to jazz lovers of all stripes. The group’s enthusiasm
is infectious, ensuring a fun time will be had by all.
These concerts are free and open to the public. Bring
your lawn chairs and blankets, as seating is on the green.
Memorial Park is located at 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. in
Sierra Madre.

FOUR SHOWS FOR CHILDREN
PRESENTED IN REPERTORY AT
SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE ALL
SUMMER LONG. STARTS JUNE 26.
June Chandler’s Fairy Tale Theatre launches its summer
Repertory on June 26 with the opening of the musical The Frog
Prince. Four interactive Children's shows, (2 being musicals),
will alternate Saturdays, 11:00 and 2:00 through September 25.
The Frog Prince June 26, July 24, Sept. 11
Treasure Island July 3, July 31,Sept. 18
Sleeping Beauty July 10, Aug. 21, Sept. 4
Dorothy and
the Wizard of Oz July 17, Aug. 28, Sept. 25
The Tale of the Frog Prince opens June 26, 11:00 and 2:00
We invite all kids to become froggies in our swamp. The evil
witch has turned the handsome Prince into a frog. He's sad and
lonely and needs you as his friends to sing and dance and play
with him. He is waiting and hoping that somewhere there is a
lovely girl who could see past his ugly green exterior and love
him for who he really is inside. Then, her kiss would break the
witch's spell and he would become a handsome prince once
more.
All shows in the Fairy Tale Theatre season are "Participation"
plays. The children in the audience play an active part from
their seats, wearing costumes, talking to the characters, and
then meeting all the costumed characters for autographs after
the show. Sometimes a few of the braver kids are invited on
stage to play roles in the scenes.
In”Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz,” the kids oil the tin man
, stuff the scarecrow and play poppies in the field. In “Sleeping
Beauty,” they all play flowers for Sleeping Beauty's wedding
bouquet and some play the Queens doctor and nurse, decorate
the wedding arbor and play Flower Girl and Ring Bearer at the
wedding. In “Treasure Island,” two crews are picked to sail
with the good ship and the pirate ship. All the audience create
a terrible storm at sea, a mosquito infested jungle and sing
with the crew. In the tale of “The Frog Prince,” all the kids play
froggies in the pond from their seats and are invited to sing and
dance with their Frog Prince friend.
June Chandler and thirty adult actors from Sierra Madre and
outlying areas have been very busy devoting their time and
creative efforts to giving children the magical gift of theatre all
summer long at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. Their goal is for all
children to COME PLAY AT THE PLAYHOUSE and fall in love
with theatre forever.
The shows are written by Steve and Kathy Hotchner, music
byBill Roser. Directed by June Chandler. Musical Director is
Christopher Callen. Produced by special arrangement with the
Dramatic Publishing Company.
