The Pasadena Unified School
District (PUSD) is the recipient of
a $70,000 grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
in the "Learning in the Arts"
category. The grant was secured
by the Pasadena Educational
Foundation (PEF), a non-profit,
community-based organization
created in 1971 to support public
school educational programs of the
Pasadena Unified School District.
“This grant recognizes the quality
of PUSD’s arts education program,
which is an integral piece of our
curriculum,” said Superintendent
Edwin Diaz. “These funds will
allow us to not only maintain
but expand our elementary arts
program, which is a model for
school-community partnerships in
education.”
Grant funds will be directed
towards PUSD’s elementary
visual art curriculum, "My
Masterpieces: Discovering
Art in My Community." My
Masterpieces was collaboratively
written by PUSD teachers working
side-by-side with educators from
local museums. The curriculum
integrates classroom lessons and
related museum visits, connecting
art with other subjects such as
language arts, math, and history.
The arts partners participating
in My Masterpieces include:
Kidspace Children's Museum,
The Huntington Library, Art
Collections & Botanical Gardens,
The City of Pasadena, Gamble
House, Side Street Projects,
Pasadena Museum of California
Art, Pasadena Museum of History,
Norton Simon Museum, Armory
Center for the Arts, and Pacific
Asia Museum. In addition
to developing and providing
school tour programs for My
Masterpieces, each of the partners
offers complimentary museum
admission for PUSD families
whose children are participating in
the program.
My Masterpieces is currently in
place at eight PUSD elementary
schools, serving 189 classrooms
and approximately 4,500 students.
Funds from the NEA grant will
enable PUSD to expand the
program to 12 schools in the
coming school year, and to reach
280 classrooms or 6,800 students.
Learning in the Arts grants
strengthen American educational
opportunities by providing
children with focused arts
instruction, exposing them to
legendary artists, and introducing
children to artworks of the highest
quality. Through the Learning
in the Arts category, the NEA
awarded 255 grants out of 658
eligible applications, for a total of
$8,425,000.
The majority of the award
recipients in this category are
orchestras, theaters, museums,
and cultural centers from around
the country. Only a handful of
the 255 recipients are schools
or school districts. The NEA
award represents recognition of
the My Masterpieces program's
significance within the national
landscape of arts education
endeavors. Additionally, the
program was featured as a case
study at the American Association
of Museums (AAM) international
conference last month.
The NEA grant will be combined
with several other grants secured by
Pasadena Educational Foundation
to fund the expansion of My
Masterpieces to all 20 of PUSD's
elementary schools. The Ayrshire
Foundation, Capital Group, Giesen
Trust, Green Foundation, Lluela
Morey Murphy Foundation, Schow
Foundation, and Tournament
of Roses Foundation have each
awarded grants to the project.
Individual donors have also
contributed, and arts partners have
supported the project through in-
kind donations.
The National Endowment for the
Arts is a public agency dedicated
to supporting excellence in the
arts, both new and established,
bringing the arts to all Americans,
and providing leadership in arts
education. Established by Congress
in 1965 as an independent agency
of the federal government, the
Arts Endowment is the nation's
largest annual funder of the arts,
bringing great art to all 50 states,
including rural areas, inner cities,
and military bases.

The Tale of the Frog Prince
Oh no! The evil witch has turned our handsome prince into
a frog! What will he do?
Young people are invited to come interact with the cast by
rushing to the Frog Prince’s aid as June Chandler’s Children’s
Fairy Tale Theatre performs Steve and Kathy Hotchner’s, “The
Tale of the Frog Prince” at the Sierra Madre Playhouse.
Sad and lonely, our vexed Prince is in need of friends to sing
and dance; To play with him while he waits and hopes that
somewhere there is a lovely girl who could see past his ugly
green exterior. If she would only love him for who he really is
inside, and show her love with a kiss. That kiss would break
the witch’s spell and he would become a handsome prince
once more.
There will be 6 performances of the Frog Prince, 11:00 am
and 2:00 pm on Saturdays, June 26th, July 24th, and September
11th. As in our previous productions, young audience
members will be invited to enter the world of make believe
and participate throughout the 45-minute performance.
The Fairy Tale Theatre launches its summer Repertory with the June 26th opening of “The Frog Prince.” Four interactive
Children’s shows, “The Frog Prince,” “Treasure Island,” “Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz,” “Sleeping Beauty,” and “Dorothy
and the Wizard of Oz,” will alternate Saturdays through September 25th.
Come build lasting memories with your children as they share in the magical gift of Fairy Tale Theatre!
