With Bobby Eldridge
October is The First Tee of Pasadena Month
On Monday September 20, 2010, the Pasadena
City Council proclaimed October 2010 as The
First Tee of Pasadena Month.
The First Tee of Pasadena has been impacting the
lives of Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley youth
by providing learning facilities and educational
programs that promote character development and
life enhancing values through the game of golf. With
facilities at Brookside, Altadena, Arroyo Seco and
Glen Oaks (Glendora) golf courses, the First Tee of
Pasadena has grown from an initial enrollment of
62 participants at Brookside Golf Course in 2006 to
serving over 2,800 San Gabriel Valley youth in core
and outreach programs. Learning the game of golf
is somewhat secondary to the First Tee’s mission,
a mission which is primarily to promote character
development and life-enhancing values to youths
from every walk of life, using the game of golf as
our means while instilling nine core values in the
process: Honesty; Integrity; Sportsmanship; Respect;
Confidence; Responsibility; Perseverance; Courtesy;
and Judgment.
The First Tee of
Pasadena’s programs
are directed toward
youth ages 5 to 17,
with a specific target
for 5th through 8th
graders. Since 2007,
The First Tee of
Pasadena has also
offered our “Mulligan”
programming to over
123 special challenged
youths from Optimist
Youth Home,
Pasadena PAL, Rose
City High School and
Five Acres. Since 2008,
we have also worked
with the Pasadena
Parks & Recreation
Department in
providing introduction programs in a non-golf setting and in 2009 implemented the
National Schools Program into 10 PUSD elementary schools. While The First Tee
core programs cost $25 per 8 week session, scholarships are available so that no youth
is turned away due to economic circumstance.
The First Tee of Pasadena would like to thank Mayor Bill Bogaard and the Pasadena City Council for proclaiming October 2010
as First Tee of Pasadena Month. For more information about The First Tee of Pasadena and its many programs, please visit www.

Pulling your iron shots to the LEFT
There are two things about pulling iron shots that I know
for sure. Number one, they always feel solid and they go
further. Oh, I forgot, the ball usually winds up in deep,
deep trouble. Any shot that goes further than you expected
and left of your target, can not be good.
Let's spend some time on why you pull and then I will
give you something to work on to stop it from going left.
Remember that a pull is a shot that starts left and stays
there, it does not curve left, it stays on a straight line, left of
the target. (For left-handed golfers, the ball starts right and
stays there it does not curve right, it stays on a straight line,
right of the target.
Since the ball isn't curving, then you know for sure that
the clubface was square at impact. Yes, it is closed to the
target line but it was square to the swing path at impact.
The great news is that you only have one thing broken, not
two. The clubface is square and the path is too much from
outside to inside.
For starters, let’s take a look at the ball position. If the
golf ball is too far forward in your stance, the golf club has
to swing way outside the target line to make contact with
the golf ball. If you think the golf ball is too far forward in
your stance, make sure that you move it back one inch at a
time. It is a very difficult change to make so take your time
and go inch to inch.
While you are at it, I want you to check your shoulder
alignment, they have to be parallel of your target line and
not to the left of the target.
Golfingly yours, Bobby Eldridge

of the green, check your ball position first and then your

Sierra Madre Resident Nails A Hole In One At Mountain Meadows
Sierra Madre resident Hattie
Harris did something that all
golfers dream of, she got a ‘bona
fide’ Hole In One last Sunday.
The ‘leftie’ (left handed golfer),
with a classic golf swing, is
known to be ‘long off the tee’
and proved it last week.
The feat was accomplished
at Mountain Meadows Golf
Course in Pomona where she
was competing in the Los
Angeles County Golf Club’s
Annual Championship.
Her shot, 175 yards from tee to
cup, was on Hole No. 13, the No.
2 handicap hole. With perfect
execution, Harris’s ball went
over the canyon, up the hill in
the wind and landed about a
foot from the pin were it gently
rolled directly into the cup. She
used a 17 degree Bobby Jones
hybrid club.
Harris has been playing golf for
close to 20 years and although
she is very close to having a
single digit handicap, she has
never had a hole in one.
The others in the group saw the
ball roll into the cup but Harris
wouldn’t believe it until she saw
it for herself. (See photo at left).
A student of Golf Pro and
Mountain Views Columnist
Bobby Eldridge, she repeated
the words that he always
encourages his students to
repeat. Eldridge asks those he
teaches to, “Tell ‘em where ya’
learned it!”, and Harris did just
that.
While ecstatic over the
‘ace’, Harris did not win the
tournament. Staff/MVNews
