BARGAIN BOOK SALE 

AT SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY

The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library will hold a Bargain 
Book Table Sale inside the Library, Monday, October 18 through 
Saturday, October 23, during the Library’s open hours. This 
month’s featured topics are Sports, Fiction, Art, Biographies, 
Specialty and Children’s books. Books are replenished daily, and 
are only $1.00 each.

located at 440 West Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre, 
is open Monday through Wednesday from Noon to 9 p.m.,

City Council To Continue 
Discussion on Proposed 
Water Rate Increase 

 At the regularly scheduled Sierra Madre City Council meeting 
on Tuesday, October 26th, the council will once again discuss 
the proposed water rate increase. 

 In addition, the following matters are also certain to draw 
community attention:

Jessica Levinson, an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School 
and director of political reform at the Center for Governmental 
studies, will lead an election “postmortem” at a free public 
forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters Pasadena 
Area Thursday, Nov. 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Women’s City 
Club, 160 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena. 

“Lunch and talk” will be the format of the forum analyzing 
the outcome of the Nov. 2 election -- what it could mean to 
the state, country and person on the street. It also will address 
questions such as: “Does money buy elections? How much 
does party registration mean? What mattered most to voters?

Levinson’s experience is in election law and governance issues, 
including campaign finance, ethics, ballot 

initiatives, redistricting, term limits, and state budgets. She has 
appeared as an election-law authority on NBC, ABC and the 
Fox News Network as well as on NPR, KNX and KFPK.

Her publications include “Ballot Box Budgeting in California: 
The Bane of the Golden State or an Overstated Problem” (37 
Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly, spring 2010).”Timing 
is everything: A new Model for Countering Corruption without 
Silencing Speech in Elections” will appear in 55 St. Louis University 
Law Journal in 2011.

 Sierra Madre Playhouse had found a comfortable niche, 
presenting mid-century American and British classics. In 
its new period of growth, it plans to expand its audience 
by presenting more challenging contemporary works. That 
includes “Anna in the Tropics,” one of the new centiury’s 
best plays.

Sierra Madre UMC to 
Participate in CROP Walk

“Ending Hunger One Step 
at a Time”

 On Sunday, November 7, 1:00-3:00 p.m., the 35th 
annual Pasadena Area 5K CROP Hunger Walk will 
begin at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1014 E. Altadena 
Drive, in Altadena. As one of numerous interfaith and 
nondenominational charitable organizations participating 
in this event, The Sierra Madre United Methodist Church 
is seeking those interested walking, sponsoring a walker, 
or donating funds or canned goods to this worthy cause. 

 The first Church World Service CROP Walk took place 
in 1969, with more than 1,600 currently taking place 
each year in communities around the U.S. Funds raised 
through the CROP Walks provide food, water and other 
self-empowering resources to grassroots hunger-fighting 
programs throughout the world. Twenty-five percent of 
the monies raised by the Pasadena CROP Walk will be 
earmarked for local programs, including Foothill Unity 
Center, the Bad Weather Shelter and Friends in Deed. 
Canned goods collected will also be distributed locally.

proposals for the printing of the 
Wistaria Vine Newsletter and Brochure

During the week of Sunday, October 10th, to Saturday October 16th, the 
Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 352 calls for 
service.

Sunday, October 10th: 

07:09 PM- Residential Burglary, False Imprisonment, 300 block W Sierra 
Madre blvd. A man broke into his ex-wife’s home and held her against her 
will. Officers worked with the Glendora Police Department to find the 
suspect and later arrested him. The man was booked at the Pasadena Jail 
for burglary and false imprisonment. 

Monday, October 11th:

08:38 AM- Grand Theft Exceeding 400 Dollars, 60 block Suffolk Ave. 
Suspect(s) entered an unlocked car garage and stole four tires mounted on 
Infinity alloy wheels. 

Tuesday, October 12th:

09:28 AM- Theft, 300 block, Foothill Ave. Suspect(s) entered a resident’s 
garden and stole four buckets of oranges and one bucket of lemons from 
3 fruit trees.

Wednesday, 13th:

01:22 PM: Embezzlement, 700 block W Sierra Madre Bl. The case involves 
the victim loaning her vehicle to her boyfriend. The victim made multiple 
requests to her boyfriend for the past days to return the vehicle. The 
boyfriend agreed to return the vehicle. 

09:06 PM- Battery/Against Current/ Ex spouse/Cohabit—non cohabit. 
30 block W Sierra Madre Bl. The Police Department received a 911 call 
regarding an argument. Officers determined that a domestic battery 
occurred between a man and a woman, and arrested the man domestic 
violence.

Thursday, 14th:

09:56 PM-Petty Theft, 400 block W Highland Ave. Suspect(s) stole a 
seat cushion and pillows from two wooden chairs on the front porch of 
a residence.

Friday, 15th: 

08:06 AM- Property Lost/Stolen, 100 block Esperanza Ave. Suspect(s) stole 
a resident’s rear license plate to a vehicle. The owner had been shopping at 
Wal-Mart in Duarte where the theft may have occurred.

Saturday, 16th:

12:14 PM- Petty Theft, 100 block, Adams St. Suspect(s) stole a two hundred 
pound pumpkin from a front yard. 

09:50 PM- Battery/Against Current/ Ex spouse/Cohabit—non cohabit. 
100 block Esperanza Ave. The Police Department received a 911 call in 
regards to an argument between a man and woman. Officers determined a 
domestic battery occurred between the man and woman. Officers arrested 
the man in a parking lot near his home.
