When the Lakers were
presented their championship
rings shown off in a crowd-
cheering ceremony prior to
the season opener against
Houston this week (video
below), the pendant Jeanie
Buss was wearing was made
by Si “Lam” Hyunh, who
owns Prince Jewelers at 411
E. Huntington Drive in
Arcadia.
Lam made the pendant
prior to last season and
presented it to Jeanie during
a regular-season game in
November. Lam also made
special cufflinks for Coach
Phil Jackson.
The pendant features five
purple stones surrounding
a yellow diamond-studded
gold basketball, all inside
a gold circle representing
a basketball rim. Lame
calls it the “Lakers Dynasty
Pendant.”
When Lam first presented
it to Jeanie, she was
overwhelmed. “I love it,”
she said at the time. Lam
said, “It looks perfect on
you. This is one of the best
pieces of jewelry I have ever
made.” He explained the five
purple stones could represent
five players on the court
or the five championships
the Lakers have won under
Jackson and the yellow
basketball could represent
anything she wanted it to
– her father, her boyfriend
(Jackson), whatever. “You
are a genius,” Jeanie told
Lam. She said she would
wear it only on very special
occasions. Tuesday night’s
ring ceremony certainly
qualified. Jeanie was so
excited about wearing the
pendant on such a special
night that she invited Lam
and blogger Larry Stewart
to the game as her special
guests. Lam’s pendant got
some well-deserved national
attention.

Dustin Hoffman - Luck
& Santa Anita
The pilot for the HBO series
“Luck,” starring Dustin
Hoffman, Nick Nolte, local
jockey Gary Stevens, and many
others was shot last April.
Jockey Chantal Sutherland
is also expected to appear in
a number of episodes of the
series produced by film director
Michael Mann and acclaimed
writer David Milch.
The first episode of season-one
will be shot at Santa Anita and
at Rod’s Diner, a nearby coffee
shop on Huntington Drive.
Filming will also take place at
the 100 to One Club, a cocktail
bar just east of Santa Anita’s
Gate 5.
Action in the first episode
includes interaction at Santa
Anita’s Clockers’ Corner,
box seat area, winner’s circle,
paddock and barn area. Action
will also emanate from Santa
Anita’s press box, and Racing
and Operations offices. Filming
will shift to Santa Anita’s
main track as soon as the all-
natural dirt surface project
that is currently underway is
completed and it is deemed safe
for horses to compete.
Production for season-one of
“Luck” is scheduled to continue
throughout Santa Anita’s
upcoming winter/spring
meeting, which runs from Dec.
26 through April 17.
“Touch wood, I think it’s going
to be an incredible series,” said
Stevens, who made his highly
acclaimed debut as an actor in
2003’s blockbuster hit movie
“Seabiscuit.”
“I’m very excited about
production resuming. This is
going to be a very candid and
very vivid look at our sport.
‘Luck’ has every right to be a
winner on every level—from
the acting to production,
directing and writing, I really
think this series is going to
blow people away.”
“David (Milch) has a heart-
felt passion for racing and
he’s going to present the
sport in a way that it never
has,” said Pete Siberell, Santa
Anita Community and Events
Coordinator, who has been
closely involved with “Luck”
from its inception.”He’s going
to be developing characters
and plot lines that people can
identify with and embrace.
Although he’s going to be
exploring some dark areas
on occasion, we believe very
strongly that he’s going to be
able to connect with a wide-
ranging audience, perhaps in a
way similar to ‘The Sopranos,’
which also aired on HBO.”

grandson out of jail. Unknown suspects called and claimed to be representatives from the U.S. Embassy

A special bulletin from the Arcadia Police Department and
Police Chief Sanderson:
The community of Arcadia has been experiencing distraction type burglaries over the
past several weeks. The suspects in these incidents are commonly referred to by the victims
as “Gypsy” type individuals. The method of distraction involves the suspects portraying
themselves as officials with various government agencies or sub-contractors through
government agencies. Such vocations represented are: Department of Water & Power
employees, construction employees, and tree trimmers.
These crimes occur during daytime hours and focus on elderly victims. Once the suspect
gains the victim’s trust and confidence, the suspect is allowed inside. A second suspect then
enters the residence and commits the theft. The victim is unaware their valuables have been
stolen and ultimately both suspects leave the residence minutes apart.
The Arcadia Police Department is reminding residents to be aware of these crimes of
trickery and encourage them to never allow anyone inside of their homes without positively
verifying the individual’s identity and employer.
If you encounter an incident such as the one described, please call the Arcadia Police
Department at (626) 574-5150. If it is an emergency, please call 911.
