Sierra Madre Public Library Awarded $15,000
“Family Place” Grant
Sierra Madre Public Library
has been awarded a $15,000
Family Place Grant from the
California State Library to
fund a series of parenting
workshops in March 2011,
part of a program to extend
services to families with
young children in Sierra
Madre. The workshops will
cover the following topics:
general parenting; speech,
language and reading; child
development; nutrition;
physical fitness and play for
young children. Presenting
at the workshops will be
community partners with
expertise in working with
young children. Reservations
can be made starting in 2011
and will be necessary for a
spot in the workshop series.
As part of the grant, the Library
will also purchase
books, toys and other materials
designed to foster
brain development in young
children, plus a collection of
parenting materials: books,
CDs, DVDs and magazines
for parents and caregivers. In
addition, the grant will cover
furniture and improvements
to the Children’s Room at the
Library. The grant will help
create a family/early childhood
space in the Sierra
Madre Public Library and
equip the Library to support
early-learning interactions
between young children, ages
0 – 3, parents and caregivers.
Family Place is a statewide
initiative to promote the literacy,
early childhood development,
parent education
and family support of young
children. Modeled on a national
Family Place project,
the project is supported by
the U.S. Institute of Museum
and Library Services under
the provisions of the Library
Services and Technology
Act, administered in California
by the State Librarian.

BORDERS’ SUPER CLASSROOM

Promotion Will Support Local Teachers
Shop at Borders Book Stores this weekend and any purchase,
even one as small as a cup of coffee or a magazine, will

org for a teacher project. Purchases must be made December
4th and 5th. Gift cards will be availabe at all Borders stores
and are limited to one per person while supplies last.
Gift cards can be used to support classroom projects posted on
DonorsChoose.org by public school teachers across the country.
To redeem a gift card, go to the website and search for projects at
schools near you.
Mrs. York of Sierra Madre Elementary School (3rd Grade), is one
of the projects listed:
Says York on the website, “You’ve got to
protect your identity. It’s the most important
thing you’ve got.” Elastagirl in “The
Incredibles”. This project will integrate
language, history and art in an exploration
of heritage, and student’s dreams of
their futures. Students will write about
and illustrate their stories.
This year will be particularly challenging
for teachers, students, and families
in public school. Our classroom size has increased from 20 to 30,
with very little opportunity to do anything but basic language arts
and math. This project will enable students think about and express
who they are in a number of different ways.
York Project: The colored pencils that I have requested are very special,
dense with color, and would not be possible for me to purchase
on my own. They will be used throughout the year as students journal
about their daily lives and experiences. The water color dyes
will be used throughout the year as well, in a number of individual
and “group” projects. The large canvases I will save until close to the
end of the year for “larger than life” self portraits.
Who am I? Where have I come from? Where am I going? These are
questions that drive the life-journey for all of us. The connections
we have to the past and to one another are the things that makes
us feel alive and what it is like to be human. This project will help
students think about their unique qualities and provide a number
of opportunities for students to practice their painting and drawing
skills.
Gift cards distributed by Borders will expire on December 30th
, so pick a project to support right away! To learn more about
Donorschoose go to www.donorschoose.org. With schools facing
many drastic budget cuts, this project will make a big difference.

CARLOS
GUITARLOS
Carlos Guitarlos' career resurgence
reached a milestone
with the release of Straight
from the Heart. The Los Angeles
and San Francisco music
legend’s initial solo offering
is an eclectic ensemble
of 17 original tunes that embodies
the diversity of Carlos'
work. The rootsy debut
platter certified Carlos as one
of America's great songwriters
and has been tagged as
Grammy worthy.
Following a successful run
through the L.A. music scene
in the 80's, which was highlighted
by recording gigs with
Tom Waits and The Breeders,
an invite to appear on The David
Letterman Show, and a stint
as lead guitarist/songwriter
for the notoriously raucous
Top Jimmy and the Rhythm
Pigs (immortalized in the Van
Halen song of the same name),
Carlos endured a lengthy absence
from the music scene.
Throughout the 90's and into
the new millennium, Carlos
could be found paying his dues
on the streets of San Francisco,
where he has become a street-
corner legend, playing guitar to
earn his keep. As a result of his
hard living, Carlos landed in a
San Francisco hospital fighting
for his life with congestive
heart failure, hence, Straight
from the Heart (the title track
was written from his hospital
bed). That experience, combined
with the alcohol-related
death of his friend and former
band-mate, Top Jimmy, proved
to be the catalyst of his recent
personal turnaround and career
resurgence.
