Holiday Food and Toy Distribution
Sunday-Monday, December 19-20
Food box packing slated for Saturday as Foothill Unity Center prepares to share holiday
cheer with 1,852 local families, including 2,988 children
Saturday, December 18: hundreds of volunteers who have worked for months to gather,
sort and package food items and children’s toys and clothing for this event will go into
overdrive. The goal: to get all food boxes packed and to set up the Arboretum’s Ayres
Hall for the huge influx of clients expected to attend the two events. (Volunteers must be
preregistered to participate.)
Sunday, December 19, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.: the Center will welcome families with children.
2,988 youngsters are expected to attend this giant party, where they’ll do art projects
with Paint ‘n Play; get goody bags from SimplyHelp and be entered in a drawing for
special gifts like bicycles and iPods. The highlight of the day will be a chance to hobnob
with Santa himself. Each family will take home a holiday food box, packed to family size,
with a meat and the makings for a festive holiday dinner. Every family will also receive
an opaque bag prepacked with new toys and clothing for each child. This allows parents
to wrap the gifts and give them to their children as a part of their own holiday traditions
Monday, December 20, 8 a.m. to 12 noon is reserved for adult clients.
Key sponsors of the event include 3M Unitek, A Foundation For Kids, Alverno High

co-chaired by volunteers Dottie Percy-Ward, Christi Anderson and Catherine May.

Duarte Seeking Volunteers for 2011
Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count
The City of Duarte is seeking volunteers to assist in the 2011
Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count which will take place
the nights of Jan. 25 through Jan. 27.
Volunteers can make an important impact in the lives of
homeless men, women and children by assisting in the
count effort. Data from the count is critical to addressing the
complexities of homelessness and planning how best invest
public resources, raise public awareness, identify the needs of
homeless people, provide vital services to the homeless, and
ultimately move families and individuals into housing.
Every two years volunteers from across the nation hit the
streets to better understand what homelessness looks like in
their communities. Due to Los Angeles County’s size and
population, the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count is the
largest in the nation. Some 4,000 volunteers will be required
to make the count.
Volunteers are teamed up, trained, given all needed supplies,
and deployed to designated areas within the County to
enumerate the homeless. Volunteers will be expected to
devote approximately three hours of their time.
