The Shabby Dog is
Canine Chic
by LaQuetta M. Shamblee
The cozy retail space at
The Shabby Dog houses
an impressive selection of
practical, yet fashionably
chic items for canine lovers
who want the best for their
four-legged family members.
Owner, Sandy Duvall has been
featured on several national TV
shows, including Rachel Ray.
Duvall has created quite a buzz
with the design and marketing
of an innovative, “hands-free
dog-walking system.” One of
her most popular products is a
Pupercise kit, which includes a
wrist cuff (worn by the human)
that can be attached to one of
her signature leashes, along
with a small matching pouch
(for cell phone and I.D.) and a
pedometer to track the progress
of pooch and owner. The online
store makes it convenient for
anyone to shop, but it’s great
to have the opportunity to visit
the retail store at her Sierra
Madre headquarters to see and
feel the merchandise.
Looks can be deceiving, but
oh so delightful! A small
purse that looks similar to a
small hat box, opens to reveal
two dog bowls; an attractive
wristband for the dog walker is
constructed of Italian leather –
the attached watch is optional.
A finely-tailored leather dog
jacket that rivals fashions in the
finest department stores hangs
among a selection of fashions.
One of her newest lines of the
hands-free system features
Swarovski crystals – including
an optional, matching carrying
case. All leashes are adjustable
to a length of four or five feet.
With the Shabby Dog product
lines established and growing
with online distribution and
at a growing number of stores
throughout the country, Duvall
is expanding to personalized
services, including full-service
grooming and Doggy Day
Care. Always attentive to
quality and detail, she says, I’ve
recruited the best groomers
in the Los Angeles area, some
with 25 years+ experience.”
Day care services will be offered
from 7am to 7pm, with man’s
best friends hanging out in a
safe, cage-free environment.
Staff certified in first-aid and
CPR are hired to care for
them. The service will include
dog walking and of course,
grooming is available, as well as
more intensive spa treatments.
All Shabby Dog products are
made in the U.S., including
all leather merchandise that
is produced in Sierra Madre
by the same artisan who does
work for Gucci, Coach and
other major designers of fine
leather goods. An exclusive
“Rodeo Drive” selection of
dog carriers by Shabby Dog
resembles exquisite high-end
designer purses and handbags.
With moderate prices for some
items ranging from $18 to $80
for dog collars, and matching
wrist cuffs from $20 - $50 ($60
with the watch), we’re sure to
see an increasing number of
fashionable dog walking teams
strolling around town.
For information on grooming,
Doggy Day Care or fashions and
accessories, call (626) 836-5452
or visit the online store at www.
theshabbydog.com. The Shabby
Dog is located at 312 E. Montecito
Avenue, Sierra Madre, CA 91024.
