GLENN & AMY PUTNAM

Sierra Madre’s 2010 Citizens Of The Year

SIERRA MADREAN WILL DANCE
FOR A GOOD CAUSE

GET READY FOR
THE 2011 MT.
WILSON TRAIL
RACE WITH
TEAM CROSSFIT
ACADEMY!

The 2011 race will be here before
you know it: Saturday, May 28.

Coach Eric LeClair and Team
CrossFit Academy will be
returning for their sixth year to
provide free Saturday morning
training runs for this challenging
event for any interested trail
runners. The training is an 18-
week program designed with
three different ability groups. The
first training session will begin
Saturday morning, January 29th
at 7:00A in Kersting Court. It is
recommended that all interested
runners begin their training on
this date; each Saturday morning
will feature a different training
run.

Coach LeClair has had hundreds
of runners and racers within
the ranks of the training team
over the past five years. And the
training program has resulted in
over 15 Top 3 finisher medals in
the Mt. Wilson Trail Race!

From the beginning trail runner
to the experienced veteran racer,
all will be welcomed into this
fun group and will be assisted
in accomplishing his or her
desired goal. To contact Coach
Eric LeClair or Team CrossFit
Academy directly, please call 626-
437-8739 or search for either on
Facebook.

 Sierra Madrean Mary Claire Malooly,
an Alverno alumni who is currently
enrolled at UCLA, has decided
to let her feet speak for her heart.
In February, she will participate in
the largest student-run philantropic
ordanication on the West Coast,
the AIDS Coalition at UCLA, in a
26-hour “Dance Marathon” to help
raise money for the fight against Pediatric
AIDS. This is the organizations
9th year and Mary Claire’s first
appearance in the event.

 In response to the devastating
global AIDS pandemic, students at
UCLA have rallied together to put
on

an annual 26-hour
dance-a-thon to
raise money for the
cause-- and to acknowledge
the battle
of children

suffering from
AIDS-- by !ghting
their own personal
battle: staying on
their feet for the duration
of

the event. With thousands of participants
each year, live music, and
appearances by celebrities and activists
alike, Dance Marathon has
raised over $2.15 million to support
HIV-positive children around the
world.

 Their proceeds bene!t the Elizabeth
Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
(EGPAF)--the largest pediatric
AIDS foundation in the
United States, Project Kindle & One
Heartland--two free summer camp
programs that provide HIV-affected
children with the experience of a
lifetime, and PAC's newest addition,
the UCLA AIDS Institute, which
conducts research right here at
UCLA. In 2010 alone, Dance Marathon
united over 2,500 supporters
and grossed $407,000 in !nancial
contributions.

 Moreover, since its inception in
2002, DM has sought to empower
the UCLA campus community

in the !ght against pediatric AIDS.
In addition to fundraising, the DM
Committee raises awareness about

the importance of HIV education
and testing beyond the UCLA community,
enabling young people to
do their part in halting the spread
of this preventable disease.

Now in its tenth consecutive year
of operation, Dance Marathon has
established itself as a tradition on

the UCLA campus and in the Los
Angeles community. Still a young
organization, DM is constantly
looking

for new and innovative ways to
unite students, community activists,
celebrities and leaders around
the cause of pediatric AIDS. This
year, Dance Marathon at UCLA
anticipates another monumental
celebration of campus unity, entertainment,
energy, education, and an
ongoing commitment to the cause.

The Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce held its 45th Annual Citizen of The
Year Dinner at the Santa Anita Turf Club. Surrounded by family, friends and
well wishers, Glenn and Amy Putnam graciously, humbly and at times humorously
accepted their award.

This is only the second time in the history of the event that the honor has been
bestowed upon a husband and wife couple. The first was the Late Dr. Paul Neiby
and his wife Louise, who received the honor last year.

Mayor Joe Mosca was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Presentations
were made by Chamber Board Member and Mountain Views Publisher Susan
Henderson and Board President, Matt Krantz, owner of Bean Town in Sierra
Madre.

The Putnams, who have been married for 34 years and have lived in Sierra
Madre since 1992, are the personification of the essence of this foothill community
- volunteerism and community service.

The two of them have worked either as a team or individually with almost every
organization in town. This includes the Sierra Madre Historical Preservation
Society, The Civic Club, The Garden Club, The Creative Arts Group, Friends of
the Sierra Madre Library, the Senior Community Commission and much more.

PROPERTY OWNER TO RE-OPEN GAS STATION

Sierra Madre is getting another gas station - on the very site where the EVG scandal took place.

 According to Police Chief Marilyn
Diaz, George Attar will open “Sierra
Madre Gas” on south Baldwin Avenue.
Ironically, there has been a
banner in the window of the station
for months that says, “Under New
Management”.

Diaz says that Attar, who could not
be reached for comment at press
time, is required by the State Department
of Weights and Measures
to open the station because the
tanks have a significant amount of
gasoline still in them.

 Attar is not under investigation
with any crimes that were committed
while the station was operated
by Evengy Yakimenko. It is not
known whether or not the new station will accept credit cards.

In the meantime, the number of victims of the credit card scam has continued to grow. The latest figures from
the Sierra Madre Police Department indicate that there are now over 500 victims and the dollar volume has
grown to over $170,000. No arrests had been made at press time.

Residents and former patrons of the EVG station are asked to carefully review their bank and credit card statements
and report any fraudulent activity. Chief Diaz reminds everyone that regardless as to whether or not the
bank corrected the problem, it is important that every incident be reported to the police. Contact the SMPD at
626-355-1414.
