WELLNESS IN THE PARK
A Senior Information & Health Screen Fair will be hosted
by the Sierra Madre Community & Personnel Services
Department and Sierra Madre Senior Community
Commission, St. Rita Senior Ministry, and be.royal oaks
retirement community. The event takes place on Saturday,
September 24th in Memorial Park. The Kiwanis Pancake
Breakfast will run concurrently from 7am to 11am, $5.00 per
participant. At 9am to 12pm, the FREE Health Screenings
for Seniors, which include osteoporosis, hearing, body fat,
dental, FREE flu shots (for those whose primary insurance is
Medicare, all others $25), healthy eating & downsizing tips,
and so much more...

FALL AQUATICS PROGRAMS
Season passes for the Fall Lap Swim Program are now on
sale! This is a great opportunity for low impact exercise in a
heated outdoor pool. A minimum of 50 fall season passes
must be sold by Friday, September 16 for the program to
continue. Registration may be done online at www.cityofsierramadre.

Services Office at 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. During the fall
season, there will be no daily admissions; however, this year
the fall pass will also grant swimmers access to water aerobics

Water Aerobics
Sierra Madre Aquatic Center is continuing water aerobics
into the fall season! The benefits of water exercise include
low impact, resistance, and cardiovascular training in a
fun environment. Water Aerobics can be taken by people
of all ages, and is especially beneficial for those seeking a
low to no impact workout. Exercising in water also reduces
overheating from continuous training and since we conduct
the class in the shallow end you do not need to be a strong

ART ALLEY FEATURING SIERRA
MADRE ARTISTS TO BE PART OF
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE FINALE
The Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce has partnered with
the Sierra Madre Friends of the Arts to showcase local artists at
this week’s final night of Friday Night Live. From 6:30 to 9 pm,
Kersting Court will be closed down and Sierra Madre artists will
showcase their work. Some of the artists expected to be on hand
are:
Elizabeth Converse – jewelry, photography, mixed media
Christine Prentiss – note cards, small art, scarves
Grace Cook - oil paintings
Susan Cook – stamping, scrapbooks
Jean Tannhauser - oil painting, prints and cards
Star Higgins – hand painted textiles
Lee Ann Graves – handmade wrist rests.
In addition to the “Art Alley, ” their will be a performance of
the band Travel by Sea, sponsored by Century 21 Village Realty.
Creative Arts Group, preparing for its Sept. 9th Faculty Show, will
feature a “Children’s Wall” as they stay open late to participate in
the Friday Night Live finale.
Shoppers who spend more than $35 in a retail store or $50 in
a restaurant during Friday Night Live can bring their receipt to
the Chamber booth in Kersting Court to be entered in a drawing,
which will be held as part of this week’s closing night festivities.
Two lucky winners will receive shopping and dining sprees valued
at nearly $600, donated by local businesses. For a complete list

Also, just to add a little extra fun for the evening, the first 125
people to visit the Chamber booth will receive a free pair of
Groucho-style fun glasses to wear while shopping.
This is the third year that the Chamber has staged Friday Night
Live during the summer, featuring live music, shopper’s incentives
and, new this year, theme nights, such as Groucho glasses night.
This year, the Chamber was pleased to welcome Silver Level
sponsor Athens Services as part of the festivities.
Free Parent/Child Workshops at the
Sierra Madre Library
The Sierra Madre Public Library is again offering its popular five-
week parenting workshop series in September. The workshops,
for families with children ages three and younger, will cover general
parenting; speech, language and reading; child development;
nutrition; physical fitness and play for young children. The informal
sessions will be interactive and will include toys, crafts,
books and play, in addition to discussions of parenting issues and
concerns.
Presenting at the workshops on consecutive Tuesday mornings,
beginning Sept. 6th through Oct. 4th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30
a.m., will be community partners with expertise in working with
young children. Registration begins August 1st, and as seating is
limited, reservations are required.

Farmer’s Market Is Back!
New Location
The Sierra Madre Farmer’s Market new location is in
Downtown Sierra Madre on Hermosa Avenue, south
of Sierra Madre Boulevard to Mariposa Avenue. The
hours will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. during the summer
with the exception of major holidays. During the winter/
Pacific Standard time the market could possibly
end at 7:00 p.m.

Free on-air publicity for local events
Sierra Madre’s new community radio station is now accepting scripts
for Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about community events.
PSAs will be broadcast on the air at no charge. The station operates
24/7 and can be heard at 1630 on the AM dial.
Any local non-profit or non-commercial organization can have
their event information broadcast to the public on Sierra Madre
Community Information Radio. This new radio station covers the city
of Sierra Madre, plus surrounding areas of Pasadena, Arcadia, and
Monrovia.
In a nutshell, your event must:
• Benefit a non-commercial or non-profit entity
• Be open to the public
• Be of general interest to local citizens

write a Public Service Announcement that describes your
event and e-mail it to radio@cityofsierramadre.com.
BARGAIN BOOK SALE AT SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY
There are cool bargains to be had during the dog days of
August at the Friends of the Library Bargain Book Table
Sale, scheduled for Monday, August 22 through Saturday,
August 27, during the Library’s open hours. This month’s
featured topics are: Cookbooks, Sports, Biographies, Young
Adult, Children’s books, and some Fiction. All books are
in good condition and are only $1.00 each. New titles are
put out each day, so stop by early and often for the best
selection.
The Sierra Madre Public Library, located at 440 West Sierra
Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre, is open Monday through
Wednesday from Noon to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday
from Noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

HOLY CHAOS RETURNS
Pasadena CA. This year will be the 10th Annual Holy Chaos
concert. The plans are set; the location is perfect and the
bands are ready to rock.
The Concert will be held August 20th 2011 at The First
Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena 3700 East Sierra Madre
Blvd. 91107. Tickets are on sale and will be sold at the door.
Tickets are $5 with the flyer and $7 without.
For the last 10 years, all kinds of bands and artists have
been a part of Holy Chaos. In an effort to bring the best
and most complete bands the local scene has to offer, Holy
Chaos continues to stand out as one of the best independent
concert events every year!
Come join the ACOP and all the Christian Rock you can
imagine. Every year the event has been a success. We have
heard music from some of the best bands in this genre, bands
like Confide, The Parousia, Freewaypeople, Coolhand luke.
This year’s lineup will include The Parousia w/ Broadawake,
Spades and Blades, Crossing Out, Sketch Orchestra and so
many more!

Now is a great time to volunteer for Sierra Madre’s General
Plan Update! This is an important document that the community
should be involved with. The General Plan Steering
Committee seeks volunteers to assist with various tasks to
help complete the technical reports needed for the General
Plan Update. Topics needing volunteer help include noise,
land use and urban form, natural environment, transportation
and mobility, community services and facilities, and
historic and cultural resources.

SIERRA MADRE CONCERT IN
THE PARK SERIES
Join the City of Sierra Madre this summer for the FREE Concerts
in the Park Series which begin Sunday, July 10, 2011 and occurs
every Sunday through August 28, 2011.
August 21 – Danny Dean and the Rockabilly Lovers (50’s
Rock) sponsored by the Senior Community Commission selling
desserts
August 28 – The Silver Beatles (Beatles Tribute Band) hosted
by the Community and Personnel Services Department.
The eight concerts are held from 6:00 pm and run through 8:00pm.
All concerts will be held at the Memorial Park Bandshell, 222 W.
Sierra Madre Blvd. next to City Hall. Seating is on the green so remember
to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Alcohol is prohibited.
Spectators are encouraged to support local organizations that may
provide refreshments.

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S
EQUALITY DAY AUGUST 28
What better way than a scoop of ice cream with a
little fudge sauce on top to savor women’s right to vote? To
celebrate the momentous day 91 years ago when women
gained full participation in democracy with the
passage of the 19th amendment, the League of Women Voters
Pasadena Area is throwing an ice cream social for the
whole family on Sunday, Aug. 28, 4:00-5:30 p.m., at the historic
Hillmont House, 939 N. Hill Ave.,
Pasadena.
Ragtime music by Dad’s Band Plus One, games and
activities for children and plenty of Carmela’s ice cream on
the lawn of a Victorian landmark promise and old-fashioned
good time. Children under 13 are free. Everyone else
pays only $5.
