Miss Palmer’s 3rd Grade Class, 31 talented and creative students,
have published a book! It is called, “Miss Palmer’s Third Grade:
Once Upon A Wayside” and it includes the work of each of the students
in her class. We will publish the book in its’ entirety this
summer, with 3-4 stories each week. The stories will not be edited,
well maybe a few spelling corrections. They are all entertaining
and original!
Inspired by the book series they read in class, The Wayside School
Series by Louis Sachar, the children created their own episodes of life
at Wayside. (Hint: Louis Sachar’s Wayside School was supposed to
be 30 classrooms, one story high; but by mistake it was built straight
up 30 stories. That should give you some insight into the kind of
stories you will read from Ms. Palmer’s 3rd Grade Class!)
A teacher for six years, Ms. Palmer has been at Sierra Madre Elementary
for two years. She was born and reared in Sierra Madre,
played on the SM Girls Softball Team and was a Sierra Madre Rose
Princess in 2000.
This is a series of stories that will enlighten, inspire and keep you
laughing all summer long!

BFF by Malia Teran
Paul and Leslie were two students in Mrs.
Jewel’s class, and they were best friends.
One day Paul found a new best friend and said,
“Leslie, we can’t be best friends anymore.” So
Leslie was on a search for a new best friend.
The next day, Leslie, Allison and Rondi were
on the playground before school. Leslie asked
Allison to be her best friend. Allison said,
“You need to get permission from Rondi.” So,
Leslie asked. Rondi said, “No.”
So, Leslie had to think of a plan to trick Rondi.
The next day Leslie told Rondi, “Your mom
is teaching on the 19th story!” (The trick is,
there is no 19th story.)
So Rondi said, “Bye, bye.”
Then Leslie asked, “Now, can we be best
friends?” Allison sighed, “I guess.”
Leslie said, “Great! Now let’s go get
smoothies.”
Allison said, “Let’s go now. We have a lot to
discuss.”
It took Rondi three years to figure out that
her mom wasn’t teaching on the 19th story
since there was no 19th story. When she came
back to Mrs. Jewels, who was surprised to see
Rondi after three years, Rondi told her that
Allison and Leslie would not let her be best
friends with her.
Mrs. Jewels approached Allison and Leslie
and suggested they all be friends.
The girls then thought this was a great idea
because 3 is better than 2.
BASKETBALL COURT CHALLENGE
by Trey
One day Eric Fry was playing with the other
Erics. Eric Bacon and Eric Ovens. Eric Fry
was the best basketball player at Wayside
School because he practiced the most.
On this day, Eric Fry was making all his shots
when some bullies from the 1st story came and
stoled the ball. Eric Fry felt sad on the inside
and on the outside. So, he went and told Louis.
“Some bullies stole the ball”, said Eric. Louis
replied, “I will bench them for 2 weeks.”
So, the bullies were benched for two weeks
and Eric went back to the basketball court
to play. This time 2 kids from Mrs. Jewel’s
class, Maurecia and Eric Ovens challenged him
to a game.
Eric Fry won the game. The score was 30-50.
THE PLAN by Sara Fraser
One day at recess, the students were gathered
around Louis. He was telling a story.
“There once was a.....”
“Ahhhhhh,” yelled D.J.
Louis and the group came over. “What’s
wrong?” asked the group together?
DJ said, “I just noticed something.”
“What did you notice?”, asked Louis.
I noticed that on the 30th story, there are
30 children. On the 29th story there are 29
children and so on. So, on the 1st story there
is only 1 kid.”
While the kids were listening to D.J.,Sharie,
BeBe and Joe were making a plan to get rid of
their substitute Ms. Nogard. She was there
because Mrs. Jewels was on vacation. Sharie
thought Mrs. Nogard always did the opposite
of what they wanted, so she had to go.
On the black top Joey said, “I could count
like this: 1, 2,5,3,6,70,100,9,10 to distract
Ms. Nogard.”
Before Joe could finish, Louis snuck out of
the crowd and ran to Sharie, BeBe and Joe.
he said, “What are you guys planning over
here?”. Right before they could answer, Sharie
dropped to the floor and fell asleep.
BeBe said, “Again! She always falls asleep.”
Then the bell rang. BeBe said, “Well, what are
we going to do with her?”
“I can marry, I mean carry her up the stairs,”
said Louis.
So they went up the 30 flights of stairs.
Louis was sweating so much, but not from carrying
Sharie. I mean she is just 12 pounds,
but because there were so many stairs. When
they got to the classroom, Louis dropped Sharie
right in the door, just before he fell down
the stairs. Sharie still didn’t wake up.
When Ms. Nogard bent down to check on
Sharie, right then BeBe saw Ms. Nogard’s 3rd
ear! BeBe screamed, “Ms. Nogard has a third
ear in the middle of her head!”
Everyone gasped.
“She does?” said Sharie in her sleep.
“OMG,” said Paul.
“That’s weird,” said Dana.
“Unthinkable,” said D.J.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nogard just stood in the
classroom embarassed by her third ear. All
she wanted to do was leave Wayside School.
So she ran down the 30 flights of stairs and
out the door, never to be seen again.
The students cheered as they watched
her leave. Then they heard a banging from
the closet, and Sharie opened it to find Mrs.
Jewels.
