COME TO ARCADIA, LEARNING CAN BE FUN!

THE ARCADIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM

While in Arcadia, our first stop will be the
Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical
Museum. The mission of this museum is
to collect, preserve and recognize Arcadia’s
heritage; to create a shared identity for a diverse
community and to celebrate the City’s rich
history with exhibits and educational programs
that encourage community involvement. The
Arcadia museum has fulfilled its mission.
Museum staff and docents work with students
of all grades- especially third and fourth whose
curriculum includes California history.

There are several programs at the museum
to help fulfill badge requirements for Tiger
Scouts, and for Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes
to earn their Try-its and Badges! “Hands on
History for Families” is a unique program on
certain Saturdays during the year. Each session
focuses on a certain country and its culture.
On September 24th will be Konnichiwa Japan
beginning at 12:30pm and it’s free! Explore the
beauty of Japanese history and culture while
participating in neat activities-Shibori drying,
making a miniature Kokeshi doll, creating food
art and much more! November 5th will be Meet
Me in Mexico! Lastly December 10th will be
End of the Year Celebration.

There are many varied displays. When I went
a few years back, there was the Seabiscuit display.
Currently there is the Arcadia Veterans Local
History Room. This is a permanent exhibit space
dedicated to all veterans of the City of Arcadia.
Every three months a new veteran is presented
with their own personal story of their experience
as a veteran. An oral history is recorded and
permanently archived in the Arcadia Veterans
Oral History Collection there.

There is a permanent section which follows
the chronological history of Arcadia from
the Tongva Period through the 1950’s. This
chronicles various cultures through the
years and the influences on the City and is so
interesting.

and the strength, resilience and unity of the American people.

Arcadia Police Blotter

For the period of Sunday, August 21, through
Saturday, August 27, the Police Department
responded to 885 calls for service of which 117
required formal investigations. The following is a
summary report of the major incidents handled by
the Department during this period.

Sunday, August 21:

At about 1:30 p.m., officers responded to the
area of El Monte Avenue and Woodruff Avenue
regarding a vandalism report. Suspect(s) spray
painted multiple locations, including a utility box
and several walls in the area with black spray paint.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers observed a
suspicious Chevrolet Suburban with an attached
trailer leaving the parking lot of Hometown
Rentals, 102 West Las Tunas Drive. A check of the
business revealed an open and unsecured gate. The
vehicle and its three occupants, including a 33-year-
old Hispanic female, a 37-year-old Hispanic male,
and a 16-year-old Hispanic male were detained,
and a record check of the suspects revealed an
outstanding warrant for one of the passengers. The
trailer also contained a large, gas-driven trenching
machine, which had been stolen from the premises.
Arrests were made for commercial burglary, grand
theft, and the outstanding warrant.

Monday, August 22:

3. At approximately 3:00 p.m., a grand theft
occurred at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall,
400 South Baldwin Avenue. While the victims
were shopping, their grey, black and red Quasar
Mountain bicycle and blue Cannondale F-4
Mountain bicycle were stolen from the parking lot.

4. Shortly before 6:00 p.m., loss prevention
personnel from Macy’s at the Westfield Santa
Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained
two females for theft. The suspects removed shoes
from their boxes to make fraudulent returns and
concealed additional merchandise underneath
their clothing. Both females of unknown race, ages
54 and 38, were arrested for commercial burglary.
Officers determined the suspects entered the store
with the intent to steal.

Tuesday, August 23:

5. At about 11:11 p.m., officers responded to
the area of Santa Anita Avenue and Morlan Place
regarding an attempted robbery. The suspect was
described as a Black male, with grey dread locks,
wearing a painter’s outfit, and armed with a knife
and hammer. A subject that matched the description
was located and detained. An investigation revealed
the reporting party and suspect, who were both
transients, had a disagreement over a place to sleep.
The reporting party, a 38-year-old Black male, was
arrested for falsely reporting an emergency.

At approximately 6:25 p.m., loss prevention
personnel from Sephora at the Westfield Santa
Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained
a female for theft. The suspect took merchandise,
concealed it in a red bag, and walked out of the store
without paying. Merchandise from four additional
stores was also located in the bag. The 39-year-
old Hispanic female was arrested for commercial
burglary.

Wednesday, August 24:

7. At about 6:23 p.m., units were dispatched
to the Arcadia Retirement Hotel, 753 W. Duarte
Road, regarding a suicidal adult male. It was
determined the 66-year-old male of unknown race
was suffering from depression and was a danger to
himself. He was transported to a local area hospital
for psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

8. Between 9:15 p.m. and 11:28 p.m., an auto theft
occurred in the 100 block of North First Avenue.
Suspect(s) stole a green, 2000 Dodge Durango SUV
from the parking lot of the location.

Thursday, August 25:

9. Shortly before 6:00 a.m., officers responded
to the 1100 block of Volante Drive regarding a
suspicious circumstance. The reporting party had
heard a loud “bang” and thought someone had
entered his home. An area check revealed several
unlocked vehicles had been entered into and
ransacked, however no loss was reported.

10. At about 3:19 p.m., units were dispatched
to the Tierra Verde Park located at Camino Real
Avenue and Second Avenue, regarding a suspicious
Black male subject who was seen climbing trees.
Officers located and detained the suspect. The
26-year-old Black male was placed under arrest for
being under the influence of a controlled substance
and possession of paraphernalia.

Friday, August 26:

11. Shortly after 2:00 p.m. in the 1200 block of
Short Street, a resident observed a heavy-set adult
male in a brown, possibly a Dodge Caravan, stop
in front of the mail boxes near her home. A female
subject exited the vehicle and opened each mail box.
A short time later, the resident observed the same
vehicle stop in front of her residence, at which time
the female subject exited the vehicle and removed
the mail from her mail box, and the neighbor’s mail
box.

12. Around 1:10 p.m., officers responded to the
Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin
Avenue, regarding a commercial burglary at
Victoria’s Secret. The loss prevention manager
noticed a significant quantity of bras missing from
the display table. After verifying the merchandise
had not been sold, he viewed the store’s surveillance
video which revealed two suspects quickly
concealing bras inside a plastic bag. Both suspects
exited the store with a total of 61 bras.

Saturday, August 27:

13. Officers responded to the area of westbound
Huntington Drive and Sunset Boulevard around
6:16 a.m. regarding a solo vehicle hit and run traffic
collision. Officers observed a male subject running
in and out of traffic lanes in the area of Huntington
Drive and Old Ranch Road. Officers followed the
subject on foot and detained him after he slipped
and fell in the center median. The 27 year-old
Asian male was arrested for driving under the
influence of alcohol and hit and run. He was cited
and released for both violations.

14. At about 9:30 p.m., units were dispatched
to the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South
Baldwin, regarding a sexual battery report that had
just occurred in the Macy’s parking lot. While the
victim was entering her vehicle, an adult Hispanic
male grabbed her buttocks and proceeded to
run south through the parking lot towards
Huntington Drive. Officers quickly located and
detained the suspect, whom the victim positively
identified. Meanwhile, officers responded to the
mall regarding a second battery report, possibly
committed by the detained suspect. The second
victim advised that at approximately 9:30 p.m., she
was placing items into her car trunk in the Macy’s
parking lot, when she felt an unknown subject
approach her from behind and grab her around
the waist. The subject grabbed and squeezed her
buttocks while making a derogatory statement, and
fled on foot through the parking lot. This victim
was unable to make a positive identification. A
private person’s arrest was made, and the 45-year-
old Hispanic male was taken into custody for
sexual battery.

CHAMBER’S TASTE OF ARCADIA
RETURNS TO ARBORETUM

Brazilian dancers, Martini Bar, Cold Duck, AHS
Drum Line, Food Galore

The Taste of Arcadia returns
to the Los Angeles County
Arboretum and Botanic Garden
from 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. Monday,
Sept. 19.

While gourmet food trucks
from all over Los Angeles
and mostly outside Arcadia
and neighboring cities have
dominated many recent local
events, the Arcadia Chamber
of Commerce’s Taste of Arcadia
offers a showcase of more than
three dozen of the local area’s best
restaurants, caterers, and wine
and beer vendors. No money
changes hands at the more
personalized food booths lined
up in the idyllic lush Arboretum
setting nestled on the soft green
grass between beautiful water
fountains with the majestic San
Gabriel Mountains providing a
picturesque backdrop.

The community’s annual
signature event that draws
more than 1,000 guests who
buy a ticket to enjoy as much
different food as they want and
tastes of various drinks, will
once again feature a martini
bar and entertainment by Cold
Duck, one of the area’s most
popular oldies rock bands, and
the exotic, brightly and lightly
dressed Brazilian dancers who
immediately raise the after-
dark energy to a party level.
Also returning this year is an
expanded version of The Roost,
a secluded area introduced
last year by volunteer Taste
of Arcadia Committee
chairperson Verena Somer that
is adjacent to the main venue
and features fine wine tasting in
a quieter atmosphere.

The beat of entertainment
begins upon entry as the
Arcadia High School Drum
Line entertains guests.
Tickets are $43 in advance
online, plus a $2.50 service fee
(www.arcadiacachamber.org),
$45 at the Chamber office (388
W. Huntington Drive) or by
phone: 626-447-2159; and $60
at the gate.

As always, a percentage of
proceeds from Taste of Arcadia
are donated to three local non-
profit beneficiaries, this year the
Assistance League of Arcadia,
the Boy Scouts of America/
Lucky Baldwin District, and the
Arboretum Foundation.

Taste of Arcadia would not be
possible without the dozens of
dedicated volunteers and this
year’s Gold Sponsor, Westfield
Santa Anita, and Silver Sponsor,
Methodist Hospital. Westfield is
the Chamber’s first-ever year-
round Community Builder
sponsor for 2011-12.

Taste of Arcadia began as a
much smaller event nearly 40
years ago to raise money for the
Arcadia Tournament of Roses
float. The Wineshed Mixer, as it
was known at the time, was held
on the infield at Santa Anita
Park for a period of time. When
the AToR dissolved in 1999,
all assets, including the annual
fund-raiser, were transferred to
the Chamber.
