Alverno High School junior Eryn Blakely won three blue ribbons
at Showcase Stables’ horse show in Redlands. It was her
first competition riding Havana Knights. Eryn calls the event a
“warm-up” to see where she and the 16.2 hand thoroughbred are
in preparation to represent Alverno in the first IEL (Interscholastic
Equestrian League)show at the end of October at Hansen Dam.
And a very successful warm-up it was! Eryn and Havana
Knights won three blue ribbons in the Baby Green Jumper Division,
which is open to horses in their first two years of jumping
competition.
She also won a Blue Medal in the Inland Empire Hunter Jumper
Association mini-medal competition which is open to all Junior/
Amateur riders who have not competed over fences higher than
2’3”, and 3rd place in the IEHJA Flat Medal competition for riders
who have not competed over fences 2’6” & higher.
“Havana was pretty challenging when he came to our barn, but
he’s come a long way,” says Eryn. This show was a test to see what
height he could do. It was a big confidence booster for both of us.”
The Alverno mission: to empower each young woman to be
exactly the person she wants to be. Alverno High School is the
independent, Catholic college-prep high school for girls in Sierra
Madre. Its college-prep curriculum and emphasis on leadership
attracts students from public and private schools throughout the
San Gabriel Valley. Above: Eryn and Havana Knights
Five Alverno Cross-Country Athletes Medal at Bell-Jeff Invitational
Five Alverno runners climbed the medals platform to receive
medals at the Bell-Jeff Cross Country Invitational on September
24. Both Varsity and JV teams improved their times over the year
before.
Eryn Blakely ran a fast 19:24 with Katherine Haysbert close
behind with a 19:57. Also receiving metals were Rachel Achterman,
Adrianna Martinez, and Ashley Haylett. Sophia Villalovos and
Brett Richey finished as Varsity runners. The JV team is made
up of Victoria Pintado, Reagan Dowd, Bella Daniels-Campos, and
Rose Boubion, with all girls showing exceptional times.
“There were more than forty teams participating,” says Coach
Ken Berry, “with 214 runners in the JV girls’ race. We have a young
team but they are learning and maturing.”

YOUNG CALIFORNIANS CAN WIN A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE U.S.
CAPITOL TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Entry forms for the statewide drawing
must be postmarked by Oct. 7th
Children love Christmas trees and
especially turning on the Christmas lights.
Now imagine the thrill for the child who
gets a chance to turn on the 10,000 lights
that illuminate the 65-foot Christmas tree
that’s erected in front of the U.S. Capitol
Building in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Forest Service and its partners are
inviting all Californians between the ages of
5 and 17 to participate in a drawing to win
an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.
to participate in the 2011 Capitol Christmas
Tree Lighting Ceremony in early December
with Speaker of the House John Boehner.
The trip, which is paid for through private
donations, covers the cost of travel for the
winning child and an accompanying parent
or guardian.
“A young Californian will have the
chance to participate in the tree lighting
ceremony this year because the Stanislaus
National Forest is supplying the 65-foot
white fir that will stand on the west lawn
of the U.S. Capitol building. The tree is
known as the “People’s Tree” and is a gift
from Californians to the entire nation,” said
Maria C. Benech, U.S. Capitol Christmas
Tree coordinator.
Interested participants must move quickly,
however. Entry forms for the 2011 Capitol
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony must be
postmarked by Friday, Oct. 7th. Entry forms
and other information about the drawing
and the history of the U.S. Capitol Tree are
available at www.capitolchristmastree2011.
org.
The website also includes specifications
and shipping directions for handmade
ornaments, which are being soughtto
decorate the Capitol Christmas Tree.
Individuals of all ages, including artists and
crafters, are encouraged to create and donate
ornaments for the Capitol Christmas Tree.
Ornament makers are being encouraged to
use recycled or natural materials for their
creations.

at the L.A. County Fair!
Looking Into The Life Of A Teenager
By Meaghan Allen
It is here and I love it! When I was little, my
dad and I would go to the fair every year. We
would ride the rides like the Zipper, the Ferris
wheel, and our favorite, the Log Jammer log ride.
In our kitchen cabinet is a collection of about six
different cups from the years we went to the fair,
cracking and changing color with age. But then
we stopped going because school got more serious
and I started participating in sports and other
activities after school and over the weekends.
So as I grew up and time moved on, the Fair got
set onto a backburner and we haven’t been in a
few years. But this year is different, because I am
a senior in high school and I don’t know when
I will go to the fair again, so we agreed that we
would make an exception for one day and go.
The fair didn’t open until around
noon so we took our time getting
there. Once we walked through the gates into
the campground I felt like a little kid again, with
all the game booths, rides, cotton candy, and
endless ride band on my wrist. The first activity
we checked was when the pig races were and
made mental notes of the times. Throughout
the day we got deeper and deeper into the fair,
hopping on rides and participating in activities
along the way. Although our faces were slightly
sunburned, our faces were full with kettle corn,
deep fried snickers and soda. We ended our
day in the science section, looking at all the
presentations and the lights of the grounds.
It was a great memory to revisit and experience;
another step closer to graduation.
