WHY I’M NOT VOTING FOR CHRIS KOERBER

 (The Condensed Version)

 Years ago I was a member of the Residents for the Preservation of Sierra Madre (RPSM). We were a 
grass-roots organization of roughly 1400 like-minded, but distinctly unique individuals, one of whom 
was Chris Koerber. We united to prevent a 650-student high school from being built in the hillsides 
of One Carter. Our reasons ran the gamut from A-Z. The school was Maranatha, the developer and 
our opposition, was Greg Galletly of the Glendale firm Dorn-Platz. He was aided in his chicanery by, 
what I referred to as his “all-girl band.” The band members were; Kathy Teegarden, also of Dorn-Platz; 
attorney Elizabeth Watson, whose firm served several lawsuits against our city; and real estate agent 
Sandy Saraganian. 

 Armed with exhaustive research by our members we attended Tree Commission meetings, Cultural 
Heritage meetings, Planning Commission meetings and City Council meetings. With hard work and 
overall tenacity, we were successful in our quest. David brought Goliath down!

 Fast forward to the present...I got a call from a reliable and trusted source who shared two things 
about council candidate Chris Koerber. First, she said he was a member of the Tea Party. The thought 
that he could be a member of such a bigoted organization really surprised me however, that news 
totally paled in comparison to what she told me next. She said that Koerber’s campaign manager 
was none other than Sandy Saraganian! I couldn’t imagine anyone in the RPSM group aligning 
themselves with anyone even remotely connected to Greg Galletly and Dorn-Platz.

 I sent Chris an email saying, “Say it ain’t so...” and promptly received a phone call from him. I asked 
him why, in spite of RPSM’s history with her, he could choose Sandy Saraganian as his campaign 
manager. He said that he needed her to help him understand the Skilled Nursing Facility paperwork. 
(Geppetto, tell Pinocchio to move over because company is coming!) His answer, in addition to 
failing the litmus test, shows that Koerber is capable of using extremely poor judgment. Do we want 
someone like that representing the citizens of Sierra Madre? I certainly don’t...

WHAT’S IN A SIGN?

 Not knowing any of the candidates for the Sierra Madre City Council, I began scrutinizing all the 
campaign signs on my regular walks around town. I began pondering if the characteristics of a sign 
could reflect the characteristics of a candidate. If “what’s in a name” could have significance, could 
“what’s in a sign” have significance, too? 

 For example, is there any significance that two of the signs give first names top billing, with surnames 
as a subtitle? The “Return Mary Ann McGillivray” sign might suggest she knows everyone in town, 
and the bright red and gold colors may denote she’s full of surprises. Colin Braudrick may just be 
a friendly, informal guy. (Incidentally, he is not competing with Mary Ann, an incumbent seeking 
another four-year term. Braudrick is running for the two-year, unexpired term of Joe Mosca, who 
moved to London with his family.)

 Braudrick, like Gene Goss (equal weight to first and last name), incorporates a symbol of Sierra 
Madre into his sign, with a silhouette of the mountains. Goss’s sign has a tree with a deer underneath. 
This would suggest natural aspects of the town are a priority. Both designs have a calming effect. 

 The dignified John Cappocia sign in red, white and blue could denote a solid, serious citizen, while 
the Chris Koerber sign with the last name in bright red on white suggests someone lively and the 
Facebook logo indicates he wants connection. (Koerber is running against Braudrick for Mosca’s 
vacated seat.) 

 The John Harbedian, barebones sign with stylized lettering in bright chartreuse suggests someone 
who is straight to the point and possibly a showman. Because the sign is about half the depth of the 
others, could he have an economic streak? On second look, Mary Ann McGillivray’s sign also is a bit 
smaller than most, but makes up for it in big colors. 

 Bill Tice, the town’s perennial candidate, does not have campaign signs nor does he appear at 
candidate forums. He relies strictly on his reputation. 

 While judging candidates by their campaign signs may be akin to judging a book by its cover, I 
felt my analyses were somewhat validated after watching the KGEM replay of the candidate forum 
sponsored by the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters Pasadena 
Area. Maybe there is something to subliminal messages after all. There’s still time to check out the
