GOLFING FOR A CAUSE Peace Officers Raise $120,000
By Joan Schmidt
Recently, the Los Angeles
County branch of the PPOA,
the Professional Peace Officers
Association, held its sixth Annual
Peace Officer Memorial Golf
Tournament. One hundred
thirty one golfers raised about
$120,000. The Tournament was
sponsored By Lewis, Marenstein,
Wicke, Sherwin & Lee, LLP and
was held in the Santa Clarita
Valley at the Tournament Players
Club, Valencia. The site was
unbelievable! Eighteen holes of
golf on a par-72 course, stretching
7,220 yards and offering sweeping
views of the Santa Clarita Valley!
The Clubhouse itself was 32,400
square feet. The Tournament
officially began with a Welcome and Thank you to all participants, followed by the posting of colors and a
beautiful rendition our National Anthem. Among those in attendance were Los Angeles County District
Attorney Steve Cooley, Assistant Sheriff Cecil Rhambo, Chief Roberta Abner, Captain Sam Dacus , Lt.
Brian Moriguchi and many more!
Do you know that statistics reveal somewhere in the United States, a peace officer is killed in the
line of duty every 53 hours. California has laid to rest more officers than any other state. It is a distinction
that no officer wants, but it is something they face every day.
The Professional Peace Officers Charitable Foundation (PPOCF) was established in 1999 to
promote assistance to members of the law enforcement community in need, most notably the families of
peace officers killed in the line of duty. The proceeds from the Peace Officer Memorial Golf Tournament
support law enforcement personnel and their families in times of crisis. Financial assistance from PPOCF
also helps surviving family members attend annual ceremonies in Los Angeles County, Sacramento, and
Washington, D.C.
