Maryvale will host a FREE new tutor
orientation and training on Saturday, February
23, 2013 from 11:00AM-2:00PM at the Family
Resource & Early Education Center in Duarte.
This workshop is for those interested in becoming
a volunteer tutor in our new English as a Second
Language (“ESL”) Program. No teaching
experience or ability to speak another language is
required. Materials will be provided. Volunteer
around your schedule – just a commitment of 1-2
hours per week. Tutors teach one-on-one or in
small “family” groups.
In February 2013, the Maryvale Family Resource
Center will begin matching volunteer tutors with
adult “students” (e.g., parents, grandparents,
etc.) for FREE one-to-one ESL tutoring. The
ESL Program focuses on the literacy needs of
non-English speaking adult immigrants as well
as people who want to improve their English
language skills. This free, one-on-one community
based tutoring program provides opportunities
for the student to progress at a faster pace by
giving personalized attention and takes place
1-2 times a week. Tutors and students meet
within local settings located within the students’
community, at a time and day convenient to both.
In the future the ESL program will also assist in
tutoring on Workplace Communication, GED
preparation and U.S. Citizenship study.
Opened in Feb. 2011, the Maryvale Family
Resource & Early Education Center provides
services to families and their children. Designed
to collaborate with other community health,
protection, and education agencies the Center
provides out-patient, community and school
based mental health and case management to
children, youth and families.
Out-patient mental health services target
children ages 0-21 and their families who receive
MediCal funding. Our clinical staff provide
individual, group and family therapy. Parent
support groups and a variety of workshops
and trainings are provided to Duarte and the
surrounding communities. Community based
services include those that occur in the home,
within other local agency settings as well as
