MONROVIA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SPACE
STATION DOWNLINK AND SCIENCE EXPO By Joan Schmidt

On Tuesday, March 5, Monrovia School District was one of the few CHOSEN throughout the country for a downlink with
the Space Station. (Since the beginning of the
school year there has been much preparation,
excitement and anticipation over this great
event for the Monrovia School district.) And so
it was very appropriate that on Saturday, March
2, the Monrovia High School Math and Science
Academy hosted a very special day of fun and
learning for all ages!

There was a science expo from 10am-
2pm which included huge telescopes for viewing,
posters, displays, First Lego League, GAVRT,
Juno’s Mission to Jupiter, Pinewood Derby
Physics, Remote Controlled airplanes, games,
activities, lasers and more! I arrived after 1pm,
but was able to view display tables, look through
a telescope and enjoy drawings from the various
elementary schools.

 Throughout the day, from 7:30am-5pm,
there was the FTC Robotics Tournament at the
HS gym; 45 teams participated. Members of each
team dressed alike-different themes, and each
had two robots participate in the competition.
One team had red flags, the other blue flags.
There was a rack with three levels of horizontal
bars. The higher racks were worth more points, and the object was
to put rings on the bars. There was cheering when your team put
two rings on the bars, but if your opponent was able to put two
rings on the same bar, your team wouldn’t get the points. It was so
exciting and both parents and students cheered the participants
on! I met Greg Wright of San Diego, cheering the “Rock Academy
Warriors”. (Rock Academy is the name of the school. Its team
consisted of seven boys. Robotics currently is not part of their
school curriculum, but this group was formed three years ago
by one of the boy’s father- Jason Berchek because his son had an
interest in this field! This is their third year of competition and
they are quite excited to be heading to San Louis in June for the
World Competition! Go Rock Warriors!

After I marveled at these robots made by ALL the students, Greg
said he felt it was such a great undertaking- the students learned
team effort besides patience and how hard work pays off.

I could have remained for ALL the competitions, but the
grandkids were visiting and duty called. Later that evening, there
was a great Evening Star Party. Everyone left the Expo pumped up
for the following Tuesday- when the Space Station was going to
down link with Monrovia Unified School District. What a great
honor and opportunity!

I went into this movie already knowing that it wasn't going to be
the best. However, I could not have predicted how bad it actually
was.

A young farm boy, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), has always
dreamt of having a grand adventure one day. Well, that wish
comes true when he goes to town to sell a horse and cart. He
ends up getting distracted and, in the process, has a run in with
the princess, Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson). After selling the horse
to a monk, who gives him 'magic' beans, he returns home. What
Jack doesn't know is that the beans are actually the same ones
from the legends of his childhood, and, when they get wet, they
sprout, leading to a war with giants.

The plot and characters never really fully develop, leaving
the movie bland and one dimensional. There was so much potential
to make this a good remake of the classic tale, but it ends
up feeling exactly like 'Lord of the Rings', which is far better than
this flat, uninteresting movie.
