PASADENA UNIFIED COLLEGE AND CAREERS SHOWCASE TAKES
PLACE OCTOBER 9 AT THE PASADENA CONVENTION CENTER

Pasadena, CA–The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) in partnership with the Pasadena Educational Foundation invites students
and families to attend the 2013 College Fair & Career Pathways Showcase Wednesday, October 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pasadena
Convention Center. The event will include a college fair, seminars and student career portfolio showcase. The event is free and open to the
public, serving as a forum for students and families to become better acquainted with the educational and extracurricular opportunities
that participating institutions can offer.

The event will feature representatives from approximately 100 colleges, universities and technical schools. Financial aid and NCAA college
athletics information will also be available. Additionally, high school community business partners such as the Armory Center for
the Arts, Lockheed, JPL and the Light Bringer Project will be on hand to highlight projects PUSD students have accomplished in career
academies.

PUSD’s College and Career Pathways connect academics to real-world applications by integrating challenging instruction with a demanding
project-based technical curriculum. Students explore the workplace, build experience and develop mentoring relationships
with local businesses, government and nonprofits. High school academies include Arts, Entertainment and Media, Business and Entrepreneurship,
Creative Arts and Design, Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Engineering and Environmental Science, Health Careers, Law and
Public Service and the App Academy (mobile, web and game development). Students apply to academies during PUSD’s open enrollment
period which takes place in January.

“This event is an opportunity for families to create a road map for their child’s future,” said PUSD Superintendent Jon R. Gundry. “The
earlier the better when it comes to students and families thinking about college and career.”

TOP TECH TIPS FOR A

SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL
YEAR

(StatePoint) The back to school season can
be a hectic time for students. With dozens of
assignments, tests and projects, it’s easy for
some things to get lost in the chaos.

It may start with one loose book or crumpled
paper thrown into a locker or backpack, but it
can quickly balloon into a disaster area without
proper maintenance.

Don’t let messes and disorganization stand
in the way of success in the classroom. New
technologies and old organization tricks can
help you stay neat and organized during the
back to school season:

Stay on Task

It is always smart for students to maintain a
separate section in a notebook or binder for
every class. If there are several parts to one
class, keep a section in the binder for each
part of that class. Avoid using a different
binder for each class as often it is unnecessary
and will cause clutter.

Get Desks in Shape

At home and at school, desks are a place for
learning, concentration and personalization
for students. A lot can be learned about a student’s
personality by looking at items on top
of the desk or inside the desk drawers.

Students can keep their desks organized and
show off their personal style by using a variety
of web-connected printing solutions, gadgets
with touch technology and detachable
hybrid PCs, such as those from HP.

For example, with the HP ENVY 4500 e-All-
in-One printer, students can save time creating
lab-quality photos and laser sharp documents
by printing from their smartphones,
tablets and Internet-connected PCs.

Connect in More Places

No matter if a student is in grade school, high
school or college, having the right technology
can help keep everything straight. An
all-in-one desktop PC, such as the HP ENVY
Rove20 All-in-One, will help streamline everything
from research to art projects to book
reports and study aids. With a versatile design
and built-in battery, students can easily
move it from room to room.

For college students, a device like the HP Split
x2 is great for getting things done. It transitions
effortlessly from a notebook to a tablet
so students can take notes in class and then
go back to the dorm to web chat with their
families. More information on technology
that can help students succeed is available at
www.HP.com.

E-Books

Consider saving space in your locker, book
bag or dorm room by opting for e-textbooks.
Looking up unfamiliar words, taking notes,
searching for passages and highlighting sections
for later review is quick and easy on an
e-reader.

The school year doesn’t have to be filled with
messes and clutter. There are always new ways
to be productive, stay organized, and live connected
throughout the school year. With just
some focus, determination and the right tech
tools, organization can easily be achieved.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF
MEATBALLS 2

I thoroughly enjoyed the
first ‘Cloudy’ movie, with
its strangeness and unusual
comedy, and was greatly
looking forward to see the
sequel, which I believe was
better than the first. All I
can hope for now is a third
installment.

 After Flint Lockwood (Bill
Hader) and Sam Sparks (Anna
Faris) stopped the strange
device that turned water
into food, they were forced
to evacuate by renowned
inventor, and Flint’s idol, the
mysterious Chester V (Will
Forte). He promises to clean
up their island home as soon
as possible. When Flint moves
away, he ends up working for
Chester at his company, Live Corp. However, Flint soon discovers
that his machine never stopped working and that Chester V’s
intentions aren’t as good as they sound.

This is the perfect kid’s movie: plenty of quirky characters,
a plot that is simple enough for children to understand while
having a deeper message for adults, and animation that was made
for 3D. I would recommend this for anyone with a good sense of
humor and looking for a downright weird and funny movie.
