ONE COMMUNITY~ONE BOOK
More Visions of Arcadia: A Great Book about Arcadia by Arcadians
& Neighbors
By Joan Schmidt
Ten years ago, Arcadia Council Member Gary Kovacic edited an awesome book, Visions of
Arcadia: A Centennial Anthology marking the City’s Centennial. The book was so well received
and there were so many requests for a sequel that Gary undertook this great project with the hope
of publication in 2013, and he has succeeded! The result is More Visions of Arcadia, a 576-page
anthology of 145 essays and over 390 photographs, celebrating the community of Arcadia!
The City of Arcadia has planned a great program, sponsored by Arcadia’s Best Foundation to
honor the book’s release on Sunday, November 17, 2013, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Church of the
Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall. Featured authors include Gary Kovacic, (Visions of Arcadia and More
Visions of Arcadia), Carol Libby, (Chronicles of Arcadia and Images of Arcadia, co-author), and
Elizabeth Pomeroy, (Images of America, Pasadena; Lost and Found: Historic Landmarks of the San
Gabriel Valley; and John Muir: A Naturalist in Southern California).
You will hear Arcadia anecdotes from the authors as they explain their background research
process before they couldwrite and edit their books. A question and answer session follows the
talks, after which there will be an opportunity to have your book signed by the author and many of
the contributing essays’ authors. The stories and photographs will bring back memories for some
while others learn about the people, events and traditions that helped maintain Arcadia not only as a
“Community of Homes”, but also a community of great people, family and friends. More Visions of
Arcadia is $25; cash or check only.
When I was at the Arcadia’s Mayor’s Breakfast earlier this year, there was mention of More
Visions of Arcadia and “If anyone had any interesting story/anecdote to write, please contact City
Hall for more info”. Prior to purchasing our Monrovia home in June, 1987, we rented at 401 West
Walnut Avenue, Arcadia. Our next door neighbor, Edie Amundson, was a delightful “Senior citizen”
of Norwegian heritage who came from Menominee, Wisconsin, and always had great stories of her
life on the farm. Her college-age grandson was “Peter”, currently a City Council Member! Around
the corner, a HUGE home was being built, and “a movie star was going to move in”. Everyone was
excited!
Seeing Council Members Amundson and Kovacic sitting together at the Mayor’s Breakfast jarred
my memory of a special Christmas card and gift from a movie star! That is my contribution to More
Visions of Arcadia! Whether you live in Arcadia or not, everything shops at its mall, eats at the great
restaurants and many enjoy Santa Anita Park. Please come to this great event on November 17th
at the Church of the Good Shephard’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Suarte between 1 & 3 pm! You won’t be
disappointed!
