THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
TRANSCENDA\ENCE
The trailers for this movie had me very intrigued. Johnny
Depp’s role seemed, and was, very out of his comfort zone. Instead
of a quirky, over-the-top fantasy character, Depp’s role was
very realistic, and that
was one of this movie’s
secret weapons.
Dr. Will Caster
(Johnny Depp) and
his wife Evelyn (Rebecca
Hall) are two
scientists on top of
their game. Both are
making big strides in
their perspective fields,
however, all of this is
stopped when the terrorist
group Rift shoots Will. With his body poisoned by radiation,
Evelyn and their friend Max (Paul Bettany) find a way to
move his consciousness into a mini supercomputer. What their
experiments creates is something the world is not ready for: the
fusion of humans and technology.
‘Transcendence’ has a slow beginning but, when it starts
up and gets going, it is an unstoppable, brilliant roller coaster
ride. The most frightening part of this movie, which comes from
a combination of the ingenious plot and Depp’s amazing performance,
is how realistic it is. ‘Transcendence’ is not big on action,
but that does not mean it is not a good movie. It is a thinking
man’s sci-fi film.
