A BUSY SATURDAY IN DUARTE
“What’s Going On?”
News and Views from Joan Schmidt
A recent Saturday
featured THREE great
events in Duarte! First
in the morning I drove
over to Sweet Nothings,
for a book signing
(Breaking Faith) with
M. Adams. The book is
NOT religious; Adams’
books are passionate
stories based on a
portion of truth, an idea
she picked up from an article she read somewhere. The
setting is Louisiana near the Bayou, and the husband has
committed the crime. He’s ready for a new younger wife
and tries to make it appear to be a robbery. Another great
book is Taste of Morgan which takes place in Mexico.
This book also is based on true events. Fields are burned,
crops destroyed, and children are starving because a
developer wants the land.
Ms. Adams is a retired teacher, counselor and
administrator. She always wanted to help others and
is protesting something that is wrong. That is why she
writes. She and her husband, who takes pictures, travel to
find a setting for her story. Ms. Adams writes in different
genres, even children’s books. Visit her website: www.
romancecalling.com .
After chatting with Ms. Adams, I drove to the
Duarte Library for “Coffee and Conversation” with
Assemblyman Roger Hernandez. Topics included the AB
109 and overcrowding of County jails, and the status of
the now defunct Redevelopment Agencies and funding
for cities. Among the many attendees was Glendora
Mayor Judy Nelson who had questions for Hernandez
such as cities getting more power, but will they receive
more funding?
The last great event, the Kick-off of the
special “Paws for Reading” Summer Programs at Duarte
Library featured Kane and Ace Mask. Who is Kane?
Kane is a beautiful collie, a therapy dog. Ace and his wife
Dorothy live in Brea with Kane and have grown children. “Kane’s” name was chosen because of his Scottish heritage- collies were brought here
from Scotland 150 years ago to help shepherds round up their sheep. They also are used on farms to round up cattle and bring them into the
barns as evening approached.
Ace spoke of the book, “Lassie”, based on a true story, which was followed by a movie and eventually a TV series. Ace also told us how
dogs are not only used for therapy, but to assist blind people, and also work with police and the army. They are used in many search and rescue
operations and also to locate missing people or find criminals.
Ace spoke of Kane’s participation in many “Agility” contests including Jumps, Tunnels, and Speed and has many wins. Ace also read us
a delightful story, Katy to the Rescue. Attending children were given certificates to pick up the book when available. They also received pencils,
a chocolate, dog-shaped lollipop, a “Kane” card (Like a baseball card) and a picture of a collie to color in. It was a lot of fun! Thank you, Friends
of the Duarte Library for providing the funding for this great event!
Visit http://coffeecanine.blogspot.com/2012/12/ace-ask-kane.hhtml for photos, a Facebook link, and learn more about Kane and Ace’s great
books.
The Paws for Reading Summer programs has so many great activities for all ages! On Saturdays at 2pm, there are DIY projects! They include an
animal gift box, dog treats, etched glass treat jar and more. Fridays at 10:15 am have Toddler Story Time and 11:15 features Family Story Time.
Teen Activities are Wednesdays at 2:00 pm. They include Comics and Ice Cream Social, YA Lit Fest (Lively book discussion of Shadow and
Bone), Digital Downloads and Teen Gaming. Please visit www.colapublib.org/libs/duarte for more details.
