HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS EVENT INFORMATION

Sierra Madre, CA. – On Friday, October 31, 2014 beginning at 
3:30 pm the City of Sierra Madre hosts its annual Halloween 
Happenings event for youth. The event includes trick-or-treating 
at the Downtown businesses, a costume parade, and a costume 
contest: all activities are free to participate. 

 Trick-or-treating occurs for 3:30pm-5:00pm and participating 
businesses will have a Halloween sign in their window. The 
costume parade, led by the Sierra Madre Fire Department, begins 
promptly at 5:00pm in Kersting Court and ends approximately 15 
minutes later at Memorial Park. The Costume Contest begins at 
5:30pm sharp at the Memorial Park Bandshell. 

 All Costume Contest contestants must complete a waiver prior 
to participating, and can do so in Kersting Court from 4:00-
5:00pm. The following categories are judged: 2 years old and under, 
3-4 years old, 5-7 years old, 8-12 years old, group costume, and 
scariest costume. Each group entry must include one youth under 
17 and scariest costume participants must be 17 years old and 
under. Prizes are awarded in each category. 

 The event is hosted and supported by the City’s Community 
Services Department, Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce, and 
Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club. An information table will be located 
in Kersting Court the day of the event, but for more information

Free on-air publicity for local events

 Sierra Madre’s EMERGENCY radio station is now accepting scripts 
for Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about community events. 
PSAs will be broadcast on the air at no charge. The station operates 
24/7 and can be heard at 1630 on the AM dial.

 Any local non-profit or non-commercial organization can have 
their event information broadcast to the public on Sierra Madre 
Community Information Radio. The station covers the city of Sierra 
Madre, plus surrounding areas of Pasadena, Arcadia, and Monrovia. 

Your event must:

• Benefit a non-commercial or non-profit entity
• Be open to the public
• Be of general interest to local citizens


Just 
write a Public Service Announcement that describes your event 
and e-mail it to radio@cityofsierramadre.com.

*This is a special meeting to discuss the GENERAL PLAN

The final agenda and staff reports will available online no later 
than Friday night. Enter the date “09/30/2014” for the complete 
agenda packet.

Can’t make it to the meeting, but still want to share your 
thoughts? You can mail or drop off a written statement to City 
Hall or email city@cityofsierramadre.com before 5:30 the night 
of the meeting and your statement will be delivered to all the 
Council Members.

Upcoming Public Meetings

Agendas and staff reports will be posted online 72 hours before 
the meeting. Unless otherwise noted, all meetings will take

IT’S TIME TO 
VOTE!

The scarecrows have taken 
up residence in Sierra Madre 
with the task of warding off 
those pesky crows. Now 
it’s time for us to find our 
favorite scarecrows and 
congratulate them for a 
job well done by voting 
for them for the People’s 
Choice Award. 

 Maps and ballots can be found at Creative Arts Group and other 
participating stores in Sierra Madre. You can also vote online by 
visiting the gallery of scarecrows on our website or our Facebook 
page. Click on the picture of your favorite scarecrow to read its 
story and then click ‘Like’ to cast your vote.

 Paper ballots must be returned to the ballot box at Creative Arts 
Group no later than 4pm on Thursday October 16th. Online votes

October 17th at 7:00pm at Creative Arts Group.

– MONDAY OCTOBER 13, 2014

GARDENING WITH CALIFORNIA 
NATIVE PLANTS

SPEAKER: 

Orchid Black, Garden Designer and owner of Native Sanctuary

 Now is a good time of year to select and begin planting native 
plants, and the October 13th meeting will definitely get you 
enthused and motivated to do so.

 The speaker, Orchid Black, writes and lectures extensively about 
native plants, water saving strategies and sustainable gardening. She 
also consults on native plants, habitat creation and design.

 Orchid has generously donated expertise, time and energy to 
redesigning, revitalizing and replanting the gardens at the Historic 
Richardson House at the foot of the Mount Wilson Trail in Sierra 
Madre.

 Everyone is invited. Dinner begins at 6:30 P.M. followed by the 
program at 7:15. Catered dinner is $10; reservations for dinner must 
be made by October 10th at 626-836-4945. There is no charge for 
attending only the program. Location: Hart Park House, Memorial
