“Your Retirement: What to Expect and How to Plan”


 ARCADIA, CA (October 6, 2014) – Allen Tsay, Financial Advisor 
at Waddell & Reed, will be this month’s guest speaker on Thurs. Oct. 
16, at the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Networking 
Breakfast, sponsored by Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary. 

The Book Rack will also receive recognition as an Arcadia Business 
Icon Presented by the Chamber in partnership with the Arcadia 
Historical Society. 

 Come out and join your industry peers for a morning of breakfast 
and networking from 7:30am-9am in the Sunset Room at the Santa 
Anita Golf Course. Tsay, will talk about what retirement looks like in 
the coming years as baby boomers age into their golden years. Tsay, 
will also be going over the major funding sources of retirement, 
as well as the important risks that retirees will be facing that may 
jeopardize a safe retirement. The presentation will discuss strategies 
to combat these risk and teach people on how to financially plan for 
the future.

 The Arcadia Business Icon, The Book Rack has been located in 
Arcadia for nearly 30 years. It was founded by Patricia Carlson and 
the few hundred books she had collected. Since then and because 
of many loyal customers is has grown to house thousands of used 
books. Some special services that have been added over the years 
include Brand New Classics, a hardback rental service, and special 
orders. The main service provided by helpful and friendly staff is a 
book trade-in service. Currently owned by Ms. Karen Kropp, who 
has taken care of the store for ten years, but worked for Ms. Carlson 
for eight years before her passing and continues the tradition of 
inspiring the minds of readers to try something new and interesting. 

As always, attendees of the Networking Breakfast (third Thursday of 
each month), sponsored by Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, 
not only enjoy a great breakfast buffet and valuable networking 
with dozens of others, but also introduce themselves one at a time 
with a 30-second “elevator pitch.” In addition, they have a chance 
to win one of multiple gifts donated by members and attendees for a 
business card drawing, one of which is a free three-minute Business 
Spotlight, this month by last month’s winner, Sidath Kumar of 
T-Neer.

 Tickets to the breakfast, which runs from 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m., are 
$20 in advance ($25 at the door) and discounted to $15 for Chamber 
members who pay at least two days in advance ($20 at the door for

For the period of Sunday, September 28th, through Saturday, October 
4th, the Police Department responded to 1,004 calls for service of 
which 98 required formal investigations. The following is a summary 
report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this 
period.

Sunday, September 28:

 Just after 6:51 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 2000 
block of South Sixth Avenue regarding a theft of mail report. The 
resident saw a champagne colored Honda CRV parked next to her 
mail box. When the Asian male driver noticed the resident, he sped 
off northbound. The resident checked her mailbox and discovered 
numerous pieces of mail were missing.

 At approximately 10:21p.m., an officer responded to the CVS 
parking lot, 1401 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a vehicle burglary 
report. Sometime between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., an unknown 
suspect broke the rear passenger side window and stole the victim’s 
purse, keys, and cash. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were 
located. 

Monday, September 29:

 At about 11:41 a.m., an officer responded to the cell phone towers 
located at 12340 Lower Azusa Road regarding a burglary report. 
An investigation revealed unknown suspect(s) cut the fence to the 
location and stole batteries and copper wire. The reported loss was 
$5,500. The investigation is ongoing. 

 At approximately 8:25 p.m., officers responded to a residence in 
the 500 block of East Longden Avenue regarding a residence check. 
Officers discovered unknown suspect(s) entered the location through 
an unlocked rear window and stole numerous items of jewelry and 
cash before fleeing in an unknown direction. 

Tuesday, September 30:

 Around 1:20 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Mall, 
400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a found backpack. The 
backpack contained a collapsible metal baton along with identifiable 
information. The owner of the backpack, a 48-year-old White male, 
is outstanding. 

 Just before 5:39 p.m., officers responded to 7-Eleven, 1003 South 
Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. An investigation revealed 
an Asian male, approximately 20-years-old and 5’ tall, selected 
various groceries and lottery tickets. When the clerk was distracted, 
he fled with the items and failed to make payment. The suspect was 
seen entering the passenger side of a silver Honda that fled westbound 
on Fairview Avenue.

Wednesday, October 1:

 Shortly after 12:11 p.m., an officer conducted an enforcement 
stop on a vehicle in the area of Duarte Road and Park Avenue for 
speeding. An investigation revealed the driver, a 17-year-old male 
of unknown race, was driving without a license. He was cited in the 
field and released without incident. The vehicle was released to a 
licensed driver.

 At about 9:44 p.m., an officer responded to Moffett’s restaurant, 
1409 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a battery investigation. 
The officer determined that while two employees were arguing 
about cleaning duties, the suspect hit the victim on the head with a 
meat tenderizer. The victim was transported to Arcadia Methodist 
Hospital for treatment. The suspect, a 33-year-old Hispanic male, 
was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. 

Thursday, October 2:

 At approximately 10:21 a.m., an officer responded to Macy’s at the 
Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a battery 
that just occurred. The officer determined the suspect, a 32-year-old 
Hispanic female, kicked the victim for no reason. The suspect was 
arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

 Around 5:48 p.m., an officer initiated consensual contact with 
a man in the area of Live Oak Avenue and Myrtus Avenue. A 
records check revealed the subject, a 51-year-old Hispanic male, 
had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. The subject was also 
in possession of an open alcohol container. He was arrested and 
transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Friday, October 3: 

 Just after 3:51 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 
100 block of Alta Street regarding a vehicle burglary report. An 
investigation revealed an unknown suspect used a Slim Jim to open 
the front passenger door and steal the stereo from the vehicle. The 
suspect fled after the victim turned on the porch light. The suspect 
is described as a Hispanic male in his thirties, bald, approximately 
5’5” tall, with tattoos on his arms, wearing a white T-shirt and white 
shorts with black stripes. An area check did not locate the suspect.

 At about 10:42 a.m., an officer responded to AWU Delicious Food, 
558 Las Tunas Drive, regarding a commercial burglary report. The 
officer determined unknown suspect(s) shattered the rear glass door 
and stole the cash drawer from the register. No suspects were seen 
and no witnesses were located. The total loss was $1,000.00.

Saturday, October 4:

 Just after 2:09 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police 
Department front counter regarding a fraud report. An investigation 
revealed an unknown suspect altered the amount and payee 
information on the victim’s check and successfully cashed the check at 
U.S. Bank, 101 East Foothill Boulevard. The investigation is ongoing.

 At approximately 4:17 p.m., an officer initiated consensual contact 
with a man who was nervously loitering near Extended Stay, 401 East 
Santa Clara Street. Upon contacting the subject, the officer noticed 
the man was sitting on a bag containing white crystal substance 
similar to methamphetamine. After the subject confirmed the 
contents of the bag, the 24-year-old Hispanic male was arrested and 
transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

VICTOR VALENZUELA RECEIVES 
NAACP CIVIC AWARD 

DUARTE, CA, October 9, 2014 – Head Duarte Boxing’s Trainer, 
Victor Valenzuela was one of 15 community leaders presented with 
awards at the Pasadena Branch of the National Association of Colored 
People NAACP’s 29th Annual Ruby McKnight Williams Awards 
Dinner, Oct. 2 at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel International Ballroom. 
Valenzuela received one of three Civic Awards handed out that 
evening. 

 Valenzuela, who was raised and grew up in Duarte, is the son of 
Lena Valenzuela who has a City park named in her honor. Victor has 
been boxing for over 27 years and has been with the City of Duarte 
for over 8 years. On June 26, 2010 Valenzuela was inducted into the 
California Boxing Hall of Fame! He has also trained with such boxing 
greats such as Paul Banke, Zack Padilla as well as having taken US 
national teams all around the world to compete against other nations.

 Valenzuela, well known in Pasadena, Azusa, Duarte, El Monte, 
Hawaiian Gardens, and many other cities and states, is a powerhouse 
boxing coach and icon in the sport. Coming from being a trainer 
at the Azusa Boxing gym for years, Victor transformed the Duarte 
Boxing gym into a well known, nationally recognize gym receiving 
countless amateur titles and a professional world title under his 
guidance. A soft-spoken man with a big heart and big talent, Victor is 
the backbone of the Duarte Boxing gym and is well respected by all 
the youth, staff and community members.

 Valenzuela is an extraordinary person with a passion for changing 
the lives of youth going above and beyond by serving as a mentor, 
coach and father figure to many. He also volunteers countless hours 
of his personal time to train young men and women in the sport of 
boxing. Many youth acknowledge that both Victor and boxing saved 
their lives from drugs and gangs. Victor also works full-time at the 
City of Hope making great strides in hiring youth to work and train 
under him in a profession allowing them to make a better life for 
themselves inside the ring and out.

 As a professional who works with hundreds of at risk youth, 
Valenzuela is a rarity. People like him are far and few making daily 
personal sacrifices to save the lives of kids. He is one to be respected 
and admired.

Grand Theft Bicycle – Suspect Arrested

On October 2 at 7:17 p.m., police were alerted to a bicycle theft that occurred 
at a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain. The suspect was heading 
toward the city of Duarte. An officer responded to the area and located the 
suspect riding the stolen bicycle near Huntington and Buena Vista. The 
officer detained the suspect and recovered the bicycle. The suspect was 
arrested and taken into custody.

Residential Burglary

On October 3 at 1:13 p.m., a residential burglary was reported in the 200 
block of West Colorado. The victim left her residence at 12:00 p.m. and was 
gone for approximately one hour. When she returned home, she found her 
residence unsecured and the inside had been ransacked. The investigation is 
continuing.

Residential Burglary

On October 3 at 1:39 p.m., an officer responded to the report of a residential 
burglary in the 200 block of North Mountain. The residents left the home at 
8:00 a.m. and secured the doors. When they arrived home, they found a rear 
bedroom window had been smashed and jewelry was taken from two rooms. 
The investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested

On October 3 at 11:04 p.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Magnolia 
and Olive when he observed a motorist committing several vehicle code 
violations. The officer stopped the motorist and discovered the female driver 
was intoxicated. The driver was arrested for DUI and taken into custody, 
where she was held for sobering.

Warrant – Suspect Arrested

On October 3 at 11:14 p.m., an officer on patrol in the area of Myrtle and 
Huntington observed a male subject crossing the intersection against a red 
traffic signal. The officer contacted the subject and discovered he had an 
outstanding warrant issued by the Alhambra Police Department. The subject 
was arrested for the warrant. Alhambra officers arrived and took custody of 
the subject for their warrant.

Felony Hit & Run Traffic Collision

On October 4 at 4:00 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North 
Grand to a hit & run traffic collision. Upon arrival, two occupants were found 
trapped inside of a vehicle. The suspect vehicle had fled the scene. Monrovia 
Fire Department responded and used firefighter extrication tools to remove 
the occupants. The occupants were both male juveniles and had sustained 
moderate to severe injuries. The driver of the victim vehicle was possibly 
under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. The investigation 
is continuing.

Hit and Run Traffic Collision Follow-up

On October 4 at 10:05 a.m., officers were flagged down by an adult male 
subject in the 1200 block of Encino Avenue. The subject woke up this morning 
and discovered his red Ford Expedition had been damaged sometime during 
the night. He confronted his 16- year-old daughter about the damage. She 
appeared to have been drinking and said she did not know anything about 
it. Officers contacted the daughter and she admitted to using a shaved key 
the night before to take the vehicle and to being involved in a hit and run 
accident near Grand Park. After obtaining her statement, police stored the 
vehicle for evidence. The investigation is continuing.

Driving Under the Influence – Suspect Arrested

On October 5 at 2:07 a.m., an officer on patrol in the area of Myrtle and 
Evergreen observed a vehicle traveling north on Myrtle strike a curb. 
He made a traffic stop on the vehicle. The female driver admitted to be 
intoxicated. Field sobriety tests revealed the driver was intoxicated; she was 
arrested and taken into custody.

Commercial Burglary

On October 5 at 12:28 p.m., a commercial burglary was reported at a hotel 
in the 1400 block of Monterey. The victim was conducting a seminar at the 
hotel. He left his laptop computer in the seminar room and went to the lobby 
to meet some clients. When he returned a short time later, his computer was 
gone. The victim called police and an officer responded. The officer viewed 
security video of the room and recognized the suspect in the video. The 
officer located the suspect on Monterey, recovered the computer and arrested 
the suspect for burglary.

RED RIBBON WEEK 2014: 

LOVE YOURSELF, BE DRUG FREE!

 

 The City of Duarte hereby proclaims the week of October 23-31, 
2014, as Red Ribbon Week in the City of Duarte, and encourages all 
Duarte residents to participate in drug awareness activities, making a 
visible statement that we are strongly committed to healthy lives. This 
year’s theme “Love Yourself, Be Drug Free!” will be emphasized at the 
Duarte Schools as students participate in Essay contests, Classroom 
Poster Contests, and more.

 Duarte youth are invited to volunteer to help us remind the community 
by tying red ribbons on trees along Huntington Drive on Saturday, 
October 25 at 9:00 a.m. This event will kick off a week of activities in 
the City and Duarte schools aimed at encouraging a healthy, drug-free 
lifestyle.

 The march will lead off a day of activities at the Duarte Teen Center 
for youth 1st through 8th grade. The teen center will unveil its new 
mural and feature arts and crafts a dance contest, and more fun filled 
activities will be featured at this free event. Duarte Outreach Consultants 
will also conduct a presentation for parents, teachers, and community 
members 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The City of Duarte Public Safety 
anti-drug campaign has partnered with THINK Together, the Duarte 
Unified School District after-school program. This co-sponsored event 
is brought to you through State of California grant funding for crime 
prevention and intervention programs.

THE UPCOMING ELECTION 

Barbara Shell Stone, a former National Republican Woman of the 
year, who is active in all levels of the Federation Returns by popular 
request as a guest speaker of the Arcadia Women’s Republication 
Club. She is a retired professor of political science at Cal State 
Fullerton where she served on the faculty for 25 years. She will talk 
about the upcoming elect on Thursday Oct 16th. Meeting Starts at 
10:30 with coffee, short meeting at 11am, speaker 11:30, lunch at 
12. Cost is $1700.
