Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side
by Deanne Davis
City of Sierra Madre
PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE
From: The City of Sierra Madre
Subject: CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION TO EXTEND AN INTERIM MORATORIUM ORDINANCE
PURSUANT TO GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 65858 ON THE DEMOLITION, IN PART
OR IN WHOLE, OF SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES AND DUPLEXES CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO
A DESIGNATED DATE AND DECLARING THE URGENCY THEREOF
On January 27, 2015, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1360-U, an Urgency Ordinance of the City Council of the City of
Sierra Madre, establishing an Interim Moratorium Ordinance pursuant to Government Code Section 65858, on the demolition, in
part or in whole, of single-family homes and duplexes that were constructed prior to December 31, 1940. Government Code 65858
a provision of State Planning and Zoning law authorizes an urgency zoning ordinance to prevent development related actions which
may be inconsistent with a plan under development, such as the General Plan Update that would require amendments to the R-1
Zoning Ordinance, and the historic resources survey that could identify potential resources and result in more detailed review of
structures prior to demolition. Ordinance 1360-U expires on March 13, 2015, and the City Council will consider extending it for an
additional 6 months (until September 23, 2015.)
All interested parties may attend this meeting and the City Council will hear them with respect thereto. If you have any questions,
please contact the Planning and Community Preservation Department at 626-355-7138 and ask to speak to either Leticia Cardoso,
Acting Planning Director, or Anne McIntosh, Project Planner.

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now
and then doesn’t hurt.” Charles M. Schulz
“Oh, if it be to choose and call thee mine, love,
thou art every day my Valentine.” Thomas
Hood
It’s Valentine’s Day today, Saturday,
February 14th and I know that all my readers
are totally prepared. You’ve got your card,
you’ve got a dinner reservation or you’re
cooking your Valentine’s favorite dish, even
if it’s something totally off the wall like a beet
soufflé. Think of that...beet soufflé! Ugh! Put
that out of your mind. Now think of chocolate.
Now think of chocolate and wine. Nice! Now,
when was the last time you read Elizabeth
Barrett Browning’s famous love poem:
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the
breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God
choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.”
I’m not sure I could actually say that to my
Valentine, my ever-patient, walking buddy,
John, but I could write it, which is what I’m
pretty sure Elizabeth Barrett Browning did,
too. Not to say I’m anywhere near Elizabeth,
but I wrote about love like this… “The Best of
Marriage”
“I sit at your desk and look out your window
at the sky.
And I think of you and how much I love you.
So many years we’ve spent together, mostly
sunny with just a little bit of rain.
I treasure these years which have flown by us.
I’ve grown to love you, respect you, admire
you, need you more with each one.
There is so much about you that makes me
want to be the best that I can be.
It makes me smile each time you walk into a
room.
How many thousands of times have I watched
you enter the space where I am,
And each time I feel pleasure, delight, at just
the sight of you.
You make me laugh, you make me think.
You make me challenge myself, you make me
want to be the best me I can be.
You’ve even taught me to enjoy college football!
Go Trojans!
I love just to talk with you, to exchange the
ordinary stuff that our days are made of,
Conversations that are the flour and salt of life.
You are ever in my mind.
You are the other half of my heart.
You are, very simply, the one person selected
by God to be my lover, my friend, my husband.
I have known you for more than half my life.
The best half.
We have shared all that there is in life:
Joy, sorrow, laughter, tears, death, birth,
pleasure, misery, poverty, not quite so poverty,
Pride in our children, and absolute disgust
with them,
And always, always we have had each other to
hold on to.”
Sometime today, tell your special Valentine
how much he or she means to you. Kisses and
holding hands are good, too…maybe even
better than chocolate. Hope this is your best
Valentine’s Day ever!

Sierra Madre Police Blotter
During the week of Sunday, February
1st, to Sunday, February 8th, the Sierra
Madre Police Department responded to
approximately 317 calls for service.
Monday, February 2nd
At 10:59 am, Sierra Madre Police responded
to the 100 Block of S Hermosa regarding a
grand theft report. Upon arrival, Officers
were informed by the victim stated that on
January 22nd she placed a gold necklace
worn that day in her jewelry cabinet along
with a gold chain. The following day
she noticed that the jewelry items were
missing. Several days later, while going
through her jewelry cabinet, she noticed
several items were missing and her jewelry
seemed to be out of place. The victim
informed Officers that since the 23rd of
January, pest control has had access to her
home twice a week. The victims believed
an employee who had unsupervised access
to the home during his visits may have
been the person to have stolen the items.
Officers investigated the perimeter of the
home and failed to find any signs of forced
entry into the home. Officers questioned
the pest control employee and he denied
having any knowledge of the missing
items. This case has been forwarded to the
Detectives Bureau.
At 4:30 pm, Sierra Madre Police
responded to the station lobby regarding
an identity theft report. The victim
informed Officers that the night before
she accessed her retailer’s credit card
account online and noticed a charge of
$700 for a watch that she did not purchase.
Investigating further, she noticed that
the billing information for the account
had also been changed. The new account
information reflected an unknown
person with an address located in Ohio.
Statements showed the watch had been
delivered to the new address on January
29th. This case has been forwarded to the
Detectives Bureau.
Thursday, February 5th
At 10:15 am, Sierra Madre Police
responded to the 200 Block of North
Mountain Trail Avenue regarding a
possible residential burglary report. The
victim stated to Officers that the day
before, while checking on her daughter’s
apartment, everything was intact. The
following day she returned to find a
security safe and all of its contents were
missing from the apartment. The victim
stated there was several hundred dollars
held within the safe and that she is the
only one with permission to be within
the apartment while her daughter is away.
The victim believed the apartment was
accessed by her daughter’s ex-boyfriend.
When Officers contacted the man via
telephone, he stated he was now living in
North Carolina. Neighbors confirmed
that they had bit seen the ex for quite some
time. During the investigation, Officers
did not find any sign of forced entry. This
case has been forwarded to the Detectives
Bureau.
At 5:30 pm, Sierra Madre Police responded
to the station lobby regarding a theft
report. The victim informed Officers that
suspicious incidents had been occurring
over the past six months in her home
since her roommate moved in and her
roommate’s boyfriend started visiting the
residence. To start with, about a month and
a half ago, the victim placed an envelope
containing several hundred dollars in her
top drawer of her dresser. Several weeks
later when she went to retrieve it, the
envelope was missing, but she was unsure
what happened and said nothing of it.
Shortly after she placed another envelope
containing several hundred dollars in
the same drawer, and several weeks later
noticed a hundred dollars was missing.
Several days later, when the victim was in
the home Office, she came across a piece
of paper that had her full name and social
security number on it. Concerned her
identity may have been compromised,
she confronted her roommate. The
roommate denied having any knowledge
of the note and said the writing did not
belong to neither her nor her boyfriend.
Officers did a check into the roommate
and the roommate’s boyfriend and found
that they both had a history of criminal
activity. This case has been forwarded to
the Detectives Bureau.
