DO CITIZENS HAVE A LOBBY?

I’m beginning the sympathize more and more with the
average man who thinks the system is rigged against him.

The current unemployment rate in California, where I live,
is 5.4 percent. This is almost a full percentage point higher
than the unemployment rate for the nation as a whole. So
you can imagine how the average unemployed Californian
feels when he reads that the state Employment Development
Department in Sac-ramento has hired citizens of India to
process Golden State unemployment claims.

According to News10, “with the exception of two managers, everyone inside the
office is from outside of the U.S. They are employed by Deloitte, a major U.S. IT
company hired by the state to create and man-age its Unemployment Insurance
Modernization project. The mostly Indian nationals are allowed to work here
under a visa program called H-1B.”

Computerworld reports “Information technology workers at Southern California
Edison (SCE) are being laid off and replaced by workers from India. Some
employees are training the H- 1B visa holding re-placements, and many have
already lost their jobs.”

That’s really pouring salt in the wound. First the company makes you train the
foreign workers replacing you then, after you’re fired, more foreign workers process
your unemployment claim.

It’s no wonder that millions of unemployed Americans have simply given up and
stopped looking for a job.

In these two instances STEM workers (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics) have been displaced by H–1B visa holders. By law these visa holders
are only supposed to be used to fill jobs that can’t be filled by US citizens. Instead
in many instances they replace US citizens. In reality the only law that influences
H–1B visa holders is the economic law of supply and demand.

The more of these workers US companies can import, the lower the wage scale for
STEM workers will be. That’s why News10 points out tech companies spent $14
million in 2013 lobbying Congress for more low–paid foreign workers.

Microsoft is laying off 20,000 employees, yet Bill Gates demands Congress increase
the number of STEM workers allowed to come to the US. Even the Prime Minister
of India gets into the act. PM Naren-dra Modi asked President Obama during his
trip to India to “loosen the restrictions on the H-1B program.”

Maybe that’s why Sen. Jeff Sessions (R–AL) points out that 75 percent of the US
citizens with STEM degrees aren’t working in STEM jobs.

The average American competing against lower–priced imported labor doesn’t
have anyone lobbying for him. And unfortunately taking care of your citizens
first and dealing fairly with domestic workers doesn’t seem to be a priority with
Congress or business.

Methinks Greg Welborn might have taken a bit too uncritically the
remarks Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at last week’s Conservative Political
Action Conference (CPAC). In his column last week, Greg warns that Iran
and ISIS are “drawn from the same cloth”. In his speech to CPAC, Sen.
Rubio contended that although we could defeat ISIS militarily, President
Obama chooses not to because he “doesn’t want to upset Iran.”

The problem with that argument is that Iran would like to see ISIS defeated at least as much
as we would. Iran has publicly urged us to take a more active role in the fight, sent 2,000 troops
in support of Iraq against ISIS last month and helped defend Baghdad.

Sectarianism tends to make a mess of things. There’s Shiite Muslim Iran and Iraq against
Sunni Muslim ISIS. President Assad of Syria is of the Shiite Alawite sect, so ISIS is after his
neck, too - and we’re in the position of choosing between the lesser of the monsters. There’s no
comparing the masses of Shiite Muslims slaughtered by Sunni Muslim ISIS to the number of
Christian victims we hear about on the news.

That bloodthirsty, apocalyptic vision of ISIS is based in the Wahhabi sect of Sunni Islam,
which inspired Al Qaeda before it. But the countries that finance the madrassas that instill
Wahhabism (and that enforce the most draconian Sharia law) are those with which Big Oil
makes its deals, like Saudi Arabia and the UAE - so you won’t hear unkind words spoken
against them at CPAC.

Sen. Rubio is a member of the Committee on Foreign Relations and the Select Committee
on Intelligence. He should know better.

I think Israeli P.M. Benjamin Netanyahu does know better, but also knows about playing
down to one’s audience.

His remarks brought to mind the line about how someone saying they remember what
happened at Woodstock shows they weren’t really there. The P.M. warns of the dangers of the
deal being worked out at the 7-nation (U.S., Russia, China, the U.K., France, Germany and
Iran) nuclear talks in Geneva, but those involved say the information publicly out there is
false; that anyone claiming to know what’s going on really hasn’t a clue.

P.M. Netanyahu, like Greg and Sen. Rubio, tries to conflate Iran, a nation with a diverse
population of 80 million whose history goes back millennia and which does hold elections,
with ISIS, a group numbering in the tens of thousands, which has been around in its current
form since 2013 and considers democracy “deviant”.

There’s a push to have us forcefully state our demands, and then if Iran refuses and walks
away, to accept that “no deal is better than a bad deal”. That approach was tried under
President George W. Bush. He insisted on a “zero-enrichment” condition, and as a result the
164 centrifuges Iran had in 2003 number some 19,000 today.

Sen. Rubio wasn’t the only speaker talking foreign policy at CPAC. When asked how he’d
handle ISIS, Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) compared it to union-busting; “If I can take on 100,000
protestors, I can do the same across the world.” It was this remark that brought the tweet from
Sen. Warren quoted above. It was even too much for former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R): “These
are Americans. You are talking about, in the case of ISIS, people who are . . . the face of evil.
To try to make the relationship between them and the unions is inappropriate.”

Gov. Walker explained the connection to foreign policy; that as a result of President
Reagan’s firing of air traffic control union members in 1981, “years later, documents released
by the Soviet Union” showed “it sent a message” that “we weren’t to be messed with.” Asked
about Walker’s claim, Jack Matlock, ambassador to the Soviet Union under Reagan, calls it
“utter nonsense . . . there’s no evidence of that whatever.”

Donald Trump explained his approach to ISIS would be to “just hit ‘em really hard.” As for
Iran, “you can make the right deal if you have the right negotiator.”

Delivering CPAC’s opening remarks; Sarah Palin offered probably the most important
reminder regarding our foreign policy – about how those long deployments in Iraq and
Afghanistan have led to more problems in our vets with PTSD, suicides, increased divorce
rates, unemployment, etc. She blames the Obama Administration.

In his blog commenting on Palin’s remarks, Bob Cesca listed a number of bills (HR 466
Wounded Veteran Job Security Act, HR 1168 Veterans Retraining Act, HR 1171 Homeless
Veterans Reintegration Program, HR 1293 Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and
Structural Alteration Grant) which were passed when Democrats controlled the House, but
later killed by Republican-led filibusters in the Senate.

Foreign policy wasn’t the only topic at CPAC. Former HP exec Carly Fiorina called the
idea of a Republican “War on Women” “a lie” – then suggested women wouldn’t be all that
concerned with the further restrictions on reproductive health access she’d support. One of
the most popular speakers was Phil Robertson of “Duck Dynasty”, who shared with attendees
his thoughts on sexually transmitted diseases (“Jesus is the only thing between you and
herpes”).

In the meantime, Congress finally passed a clean funding bill for the Department of
Homeland Security, after weeks of Republicans holding it hostage. They figured they had to
do something, especially with that Netanyahu appearance not working out as they’d hoped.
According to an NBC / WSJ poll, Americans by a 48% to 30% margin felt House Speaker John
Boehner (R-OH) blew it by not working with the White House on the visit. While according to
Gallup, during the time the Prime Minister was over here in the States, approval for President
Obama shot up by five points.
