PROJECT SCIENTIST PARTNERS
WITH CALTECH

Project Scientist STEM summer camp for girls is accepting
applications now.

Project Scientist Academy is a five-week summer camp that
provides an engaging and fun environment for girls, ages 4-14, with
a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Newly established in Pasadena, the camp will be held June 8 – July
24, 2015 at the campuses of California Institute of Technology
and Longfellow Elementary. Each week investigates a different
STEM theme and offers an expedition to local STEM companies.
Daily class incorporates science experiments, art projects, physical
activities, and the opportunity to meet a STEM Superstar (a local
female employed in a STEM field). Project Scientist mom Angela
Willis says, “We were thrilled to find a place where our daughters
could continue exploring their interests in STEM with other young
female scientists. We are so grateful to Project Scientist!”

On partnering with Project Scientist, Spiros Michalakis,
Theoretical Physicist, Caltech, says, “We are extremely proud to be
able to bring Project Scientist to girls in Los Angeles. After spending
a week at Project Scientist camp last summer in Charlotte, I knew
it was the type of program that Caltech would want to support and
collaborate on in support of girls and women in STEM. They are
inspiring the next generation of STEM Superstars and the research
from Harvard and UNCC proves their impact.” The need for Project
Scientist was based on a vast amount of research that shows girls
with a high aptitude for STEM subjects are not currently served or
identified at a young age and lack opportunities commensurate with
their talents and interests. “This is a big opportunity for girls…It
makes you think more about earth and about how many things you
can change through science. I want to be a surgeon because I love
helping people. I think everyone can change the world,” says Grace,
age 10. Research shows that 78% of school-aged girls have an interest
in STEM, yet women only make up 25% of the STEM workforce,
and somewhere along the line society is losing these STEM girls.
Project Scientist is determined to reach STEM girls and hold their
hand through a PhD or as long and as far as their STEM dreams will
take them.

About Project Scientist:

Sandy Marshall established Project Scientist in Charlotte, North
Carolina in 2011. She says, “Project Scientist is 110-percent research
based. Every action we take is strategic in the best methods to
teach and inspire girls in STEM fields.” Each year, Project Scientist
partners with Harvard University and the University of North
Carolina Charlotte to examine Project Scientist’s teaching model
and validate their impact upon the girls. The vision of Project
Scientist is to transform the face of STEM by nurturing today’s
future scientists who will lead the world in solving tomorrow’s
greatest challenges. Finally, by highlighting these girls through
public relations and marketing efforts, Project Scientist hopes to
change society’s overall perception of girls’ interest and aptitude in
STEM, which will ultimately help all girls. Mayra, age 13, sums it
up by saying, “I love math and financial topics. Bank of America
coming to talk with us is like me seeing myself in the future for
what I want to do when I grow up.” Visit www.projectscientist.org
for more information and to apply to the summer academy.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show

CINDERELLA REVIEW

The original 1950 animated version of this classic story has always been
considered the definitive version. Millions of dollars of merchandise
have been created because of the world famous princess and her castle
has even inspired Disney’s logo. So, how does the modern, live action
film stand up to the power of the original? In the tale that everyone
knows by heart, Ella (Lily James) experiences the death of both of her
parents. Heartbroken and lonely, she is enslaved by her stepmother
(Cate Blanchett) and forced to serve her and her stepsisters (Sophie
McShera and Holliday Grainger). Then, against their will, she attends
the Prince’s ball and the two find that the love between them is greater
than anything life can throw at them.

Before now, there was a certain level of detail that only animated
films could achieve; however, this film proves that that fact is no longer
true. The live-action ‘Cinderella’ is like an intricately wrapped present,
with each layer more detailed and beautiful than the last. The set
pieces and costumes are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen
and the story, more particularly the stepmother and Cinderella and
the Prince’s romance, are updated just enough to keep the magic of the
original while helping to explain it to a new generation.
